    In the strike shortened 1981 season, the Twins went 41-68, which would equate to 61-101 over a 162 game season. In 1982, they went 60-102. Be careful what you wish for. This Twins team isn't going to lose 102 games.

    Royce Lewis was never 'completely harmless' in his call up to the Twins. 12 games in 2022, .867 OPS and 143 OPS+. |n 2023, in 58 games, he was .921 OPS and 249 OPS+. Maybe you are thinking of another Royce Lewis?

    I'm not sure I buy in that the Twins are all that different. Just look at Outman, who was a Dodgers 'shining star' and then he wasn't. Both Lewis and Kirilloff were the products of injuries, and, again, the Twins are not unique there. It's way too early to write off Keaschall - lots of players struggle their second year in MLB, and Keaschall didn't even have a full first year. Wallner is a typical boom or bust power hitter. Who knows with him? Rooker is the example of a player who, after multiple teams tried, he finally figured it out.

    I agree that a catcher is probably on a long end of the recovery timeline. That said, I doubt it will hurt his free agency value that much - it's not like a torn ACL or multiple concussions. A broken bone that fully heals isn't that much more likely to be broken again. Given Jeffers' strong performance this year, he will be in demand in the FA market.

    Bowman opted out - don't blame him. Garcia gave up an ER, 2 hits, walked a batter, has an ERA of 9.00 and a WHIP close to 2. It's bizarre that they let Bowman go and kept Garcia.

    The offense isn't the problem. They are tied for 8th in runs scored. So all the position players you complain about are still resulting in an offense that is better than nearly every team in baseball. I think we sometimes forget that the average player is 'flalying away' on 75% of his at bats. The problems are the bullpen, one starting pitcher, and defense.

    Emma has to be healthy first. I still think it's the All Star break for significant changes. Whatever you do with SWR, he needs to be out of the rotation, and Zebby deserves another few starts.

    If the Twins really are 'trying to win' then you wave good bye to the starting pitcher with SWR's numbers, you promote Bowman and put Zebby back in the rotation. If they really do send Zebby down and give SWR another start, what does that say about the importance of accountability?

    And . . . what are you going to do with a pitcher with his record and repertoire? He's had 9 starts, a 7.71 ERA, a WHIP closing in on 2, and a WAR of -1.2. He doesn't really match up with a bullpen role. If somebody claims him, best of luck to them.

    I'm semi-surprised they didn't send down SWR instead. If they don't want to jettison Garcia (incriminating photos of the GM?), why not call up Bowman and send down SWR? Give Matthews a few turns in the rotation - he cannot possibly do worse than SWR, unless you can somehow lose two games in one start.

    It may be light at the end of the tunnel, but it's still pretty faint.

    As you note, when he's hitting his spots, he can be very efficient. I referred to him having done it before. He had an 89 pitch, 10 Ks, complete game 10-2 win against Oakland back in 2024. We can hope that he is regaining that form, because he had a strong stretch of very good starting pitching that year.

    That was the definition of an efficient outing. No walks, a couple of hits, average 10 pitches an inning and a complete game shutout. The interesting thing is that this isn't the first time Ober has done something like this.

    There is value in a strong defensive SS - Ozzie Smith didn't make the HOF based on his bat. That said, you need to get the offense from somewhere. The Detroit Tigers probably don't win the 1968 World Series with Roy Oyler at shortstop (as great defensively as he was). Instead, gutsy move by Sparky Anderson to insert Gold Glove winning outfielder Mickey Stanley at shortstop to amp up their offense.

    Team average OPS for a SS who can field the position would be fine. As the article notes, if he's chasing stuff inside, he should be ok. Last year, Lee played 2B and 3B about the same number of games for the Twins. He did have 4 errors at 2B and 0 at 3B, so maybe he is more suited to that position. That said, it's probably somewhat situational as to where he would play - or maybe he becomes a utility infielder who still plays most days (if he keeps hitting).

    If he notches things up a bit offensively, I'd set the over/under as the All-Star break.

    Pick Bowman and drop Garcia from the 40 man. In 5 2/3rds innings, he's given up 9 hits, issued 3 walks, no Ks, 9 earned runs, WHIP over 2, ERA of 14.29. The guy's 39 years old - it's not as if things are going to get much better.

    If/when Culpepper comes up to play SS, it would allow the Twins to move Lee (and his not that strong of an arm) to second base.

    For several of these deals, adding up the wins and losses for 2026 misses the point. Castro/Bader, for example, were not going to re-sign with the Twins, and the Twins were not going to the play-offs last year, so it is impossible to judge those trades as negatives in terms of value for the Twins. While they have little chance of positive impact on the Twins in 2026, that wasn't the point of those trades.

    If it's too early to start quoting stats, isn't it too early to suggest he might be a 'professional hitter' DH?

    Right now his OPS at A ball Fort Myers is .602, and he has 2 HRs in 115 PAs, with 55 Ks and 11 BBs. I'd say he's far from proving himself to be a professional hitter at this point.

    Where is he going to play that he doesn't butcher defensively? So far this year, 66 chances at SS and 9 errors. 13 chances at 3B and 3 errors. Combined, 79 chances, 12 errors. That has permanent DH written all over it.
