  1. Granted. But what I find of interest is that he wanted to return to the Twins. Had a great job with Orioles, had a future there, but when money AND more came knocking, he found the Twins as a good organization to rejoin. My only hope is that we will move away from a hitting philosophy of "3 outcomes." I listened to alot of Guards and Tigers this summer. Vogt and Hinch employed small ball and in other situations, it was long ball. Swinging "from the heels" on every occasion is a recipe to mediocrity if you don't have Judge et al in slots 1-9. Pass it on; mix it up.
  2. Yankees' adjusted payroll 3x as much as Guardians. Go Guards! Roll over 'em.
  3. Spot on. I attribute that to St Peter, CEO and President. Public relations, marketing of the players and team, broadening and mining the market area, media component, TV/radio network and rev's, etc. He doesn't strike me as a creative individual/executive. One successful area is the fan experience. The entire crew at the park is superb. Welcoming environment, personable staff, clean. I have never had a bad experience at Target Field. Some will complain about concession prices but many haven't attended games elsewhere and don't have that perspective.
  4. People aren't standing in line to buy MLB franchises: Oldest demographic for attendance and viewership 23rd in attendance Angels and Nationals failed to attract a buyer in two years and removed from the market. Price tage? Probably $1.5-2BB. But like real estate, it takes just one buyer. Billionaire w/money to blow, just wants to join a select club. Hedge fund who will buy and then flip it. Will be interesting story to follow. Don't look for payroll to creep up at all in interim. Falvey will be playing the first 5 cards dealt while others CBOs will be drawing until they like their hand.
  5. Minnie Billionaires: Glen Taylor: Owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves Stanley Hubbard: Broadcasting mogul and owner of Hubbard Broadcasting John and Martha MacMillan: Heirs to the Cargill fortune Jeffrey Michael: Founder of Corvel Corporation Dick Schulze: Founder of Best Buy Plus Pohlad family, if aggregated
  6. Many good ideas in there. You should tap St Peter (the mortal one) on the shoulder and tell him he is in your chair and take his keys!
  7. This agrees with my calculation but with a retired IRA, mine is tuned down and is muted. <Winks>.
  8. NB: Game 5 moved up to 1pm Sat. Skubal/Boyd. Phone will be on airplane mode. Told Grandson, "Don't get sick."
  9. Speed gun introduction by the scouts shifted priority to speed. Would love to have had the gun on Burdette, Koufax, Spahn, Gossage, Mathewson, Drysdale, Feller, etc. I think the cycle of speed will shift down a bit as GMs realize their arms have a limited shelf life and swing back to the pitchers with a great command of several pitches. Speed will continue to dominate the closers. ---- From Google's AI: 1973: Michigan State baseball coach Danny Litwhiler noticed campus police using radar guns to catch speeding cars and thought he could use the technology to train his team. 1981: The JUGS Radar Gun was used at the World Series. The original JUGS Radar Gun is on display at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. 2006–2015: MLB used the PITCHf/x system to track pitches. 2008: Radar guns began recording velocity and pitch tracking data. 2015: MLB began using the Statcast system to record pitches.
  10. The assets of their named foundation and non-profit (Twins Community Fund) represent about 3.5% of family wealth. The family may well donate beyond that amount to other non-profits. You can judge for yourself about their personal generousity or lack thereof by assessing against your own personal giving, particularly if you had wealth of $3.4 billion.
  11. Six acres of a teflon compound coated fabric and 180 miles of supporting cables. As another poster has mentioned, bet ownership evaluates insurance payout and reconsiders the St Pete/Gas Plant plan.
  12. I don't find this to be true. Their actions always struck me as business owners operating based on a franchise typical for a medium size market. No commitment to an exceptional product but rather content at fielding average teams.
  13. We lived in Tampa for 13 years so we have folllowed the news of Milton's destructive path across Florida. The roof of the stadium in St Pete is in shreds. Too early to assess full damage but it again raises question of new ballpark in Ybor City (eastern part of Tampa), new ballpark in St Pete, or contraction and a move to Nashville. https://weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/2024-10-09-hurricane-milton-slideshow
  14. Thanks, I didn't know that. My accounting prof would give me the stink eye...(58 yrs ago).
  15. WCCO's demographics are just us old gaffers. Need to have the game within a sports context, such as KFAN, wherein there could be more dedicated talk-show time. All of MLB needs to wakeup and be more agile, more proactive rather than resting on yesterday's laurels.
  16. Listening to the Yanks via radio broadcast, the revenue from ads must be phenomenal. Sterling and sidekick Susan continuously, I mean continuously read 10-second spots during the inning rather than fill with baseball banter. I finally gave up on them and turned into KC broadcasters. But the revenue stream in NY is immeasurable. The $310MM payroll vs Twins $130MM shows the disparity of rev's that stream in the largest market. As Leviathan asks, will MLB wrestle the bear sooner or later?
  17. I would love to know what survey/demographics make it possible to close out Southern Iowa and Western South Daknota. Really able to slice it that thin?
  18. Carmargo hit .212. in AAA. The games I went to, he seemed to have a weight issue.
  19. John Sterling has come out of retirement to call the Yankees post-season game. Enjoyable. Problem with Yankees radio is that it is jammed with ads. You can see how they generate so much revenue. It is excessive. This inning brought to you by Nissan. Visit your metro Nissan deal thruout the NYC metro area today. Commitment shown on the field is like the commitmnt of 1st Bank of Manhattan, where all your banking needs... That strike reminds me of the strike given to you by The International Longshoremen's Association at the Port...
  20. Brieske to close. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/briesbe01.shtml Ground ball pitcher.
  21. 93.7 mph slider. Boom; Carpenter hits the nail in Guards coffin.
  22. Looked at Skubal's ground ball: fly ball ratio. .38 Yet he got two big ones over the last two innings.
