  1. A little off topic, but at what point is Rosario deemed core? He’s already lived in the shadows for years do to scout projections, draft positions, signing bonuses, prospect rankings, writer and fan expectations, etc. But even after the past two MLB seasons, the dude is still an afterthought. SMH.
  2. It’s almost like NOT playing Morrison, Santana, and Odorizzi would actually increase the likelihood of another team taking a flier on one of them. Like George Costanza - his presence in his office could only hurt him lol. Same goes for Addison Reed now that I think about it. Had such high hopes for him too. I for one, feel there’s something wrong with him physically that he’s been playing thru for quite some time. His stuff was pretty filthy upon arrival - especially the breaking ball. Now, not so much.
  3. For all the stat guys out there - Joe’s 2017 numbers: (thru Aug when story was written by SB) Low Leverage: .616 OPS Medium Leverage: .850 OPS High Leverage: 1.024 OPS Pretty good for a guy way past his prime.
  4. Agreed on the statement of not picking up anymore loose arms. I can’t describe how frustrated I was the other night watching Dereck Rodriguez pitch for the Giants. We’ve already had to let go of too many high upside arms recently and really feel like we’ve been blowing it on that front.
  5. Both the arrows and the tilted cap are tributes to his late father. I find it rather admirable that he does the tributes regardless of what anyone else thinks. But yeah, on the surface it can seem unsportsman like and I get why many find it irritating lol. Agreed on A’s! They often times become competitive seemingly out of nowhere, playing fundamentally sound baseball. Kinda like the “Twins Way” pipe dream we hear about, but actually living it in real life lol.
  6. I second the thanks on the mentioning of Kusick. I had the priveledge of playing summer ball for him as a high schooler and was also friends with his son, so I got to know his family. I have some cool memories of stories he would share regarding life in the big leagues, like facing Nolan Ryan a handful of times. He said he struck out almost all of em, but finally got a hold of one and took him yard. How cool would that be? I also have a memory grabbing of him a bat one time and jumping in our batting cage. He was ticked off at how some of my teammates were hitting, so it was lesson time. I was the one throwing BP and was terrified. I had the L-Screen in there, but had serious doubts on its effectiveness to protect me. But terror aside, it’s difficult to put in words how good his hands were in that on the spot lesson we witnessed. I share this because it’s mind boggling to try to comprehend how good one has to be to even be a mediocre a major leaguer. I was fortunate enough to play some college and town ball as a young adult myself, witnessing real talent on ocassion, but those big hands of Kusick’s snapping the bat back at me really stands out. So I just remembered how this forum started - who’s on first. In relation to the hitting lesson described above with Kuse, I’m not sure I could wrap my brain around getting a hitting lesson from Mauer. smh one of the best pure hitters of all time and people want to jettison him. smh
  7. Im all about a good debate. A few of you have brought good arguments/plans that keep Joe and some let him walk. Very cool. That said, do we really have to keep belaboring that Joe doesnt hit for power paleez? The stat guys would point to data sets that say that powe is not joes only problem. Hes not driving runs or scoring enough runs. And i would say to them do u you watch the games? Yes, i am a Mauer fan. Believe it or not i think hes one of the mostunderrated in the game. Giving professional at bats, turning a lineup over, saving the left side of errorrs, scaring the hell out of Verlander. Where does this show up in the box score - or in the new metrics? As for the Kirby guy. Be careful on your heros - theres some darkness there.
  8. Can anyone envision a scenario where Molitor gets replaced now and the team then goes on to have a successful season, making the playoffs at least as a wildcard? To me it seems like the Twins would be raising the white flag if Molitor is canned at this early stage. I myself am not ready to throw in the towel! Call me a homer lol
  9. Nice perspective Ted. Contrary to many, I think we need to stick with him a bit longer. Rodney had a terrible April last year and then went on to have a pretty good season. No guarantee he will repeat this, just really hopeful he does because of the negative trickle down effect it would have if he needs to be replaced. Reed seems perfect as our jack of all leverage version of Andrew Miller. And though the idea of Presley in the closer role does have some intrigue, it would lead to another high leverage vacancy. I get that fans are disheartened and some are looking for a fall guy, but there’s plenty of blame to go around. Man the pitch today reminded me of the Adam Jones pitch. Two terrible results on two good pitches out of the zone. Closers that get a track record can shake off bad luck this, so that’s the hope here.
  10. Berrios is ridiculous. Can’t even wrap my brain around the idea of him developing his change up. Forget about it.
  11. Snakebitten. Chi Sox pitcher sure isn’t fooling anyone. Yet we have nothing to show for it! Is that sustainable? lol
  12. I noticed everyone was singing kumbuya out here on TD after Berrios’s complete game. Come on Jose - do it for peace and love lol
  13. Thanks for the write up Ted! It seems Mauer is still under appreciated at times, so these kind of articles are like a breath of fresh air. People can debate his composite value until the end of time, but the long and the short of it is that the Twins lineup is better with Joe in it. Both Gardy and Molitor have said the offense flows thru Joe. If you don’t care for those opinions, go ask Verlander. Joe was the only guy to put fear into that normally fearless stud of a pitcher the other night. These kind of things don’t always show up in the box score, but dang well catch my attention as a fan!
  14. I agree that stats are a ton of fun, but also feel it is presumptuous to state that a person doesn’t know baseball or that the math is too complicated when they aren’t on top of the latest advanced metrics. I’m kinda new to TD but have already gathered that there’s an eye test crowd, a stat crowd, and a mixture of both out here. This can make for excellent debates! But some of the slights (from both sides) can get a little hard to stomach at times. Just one fella’s two cents.
  15. Minority opinion here, but I think Hildy actually did ok today. Yeah he got ambushed right off the bat, but after was satisfactory. Have no problem at all with a solo homerun. The dude got important outs and most importantly threw strikes. Seemed to me he would grade out better than Gibson. And I won’t even attempt to go down Duke Road lol.
  16. Man if only Rosario could do something to help his team win.
  17. It seems Rosario has currently supplanted Mauer as the most polarizing Twin, which is interesting since they have completely opposite personalities. I suppose that script could be flipped again, but I have the opinion that success of BOTH players is integral to the team’s success (as it was last year). That said, I’m sure rooting for both.
  18. I get that our scouting department saw something with Kinley and it was totally reasonable to act on acquiring him - this is what the scouts get paid for. That said, why didn’t the FO just make a trade for him using one of the guys we ended up losing in the Rule 5? Am I missing something other than losing out on the gamble the FO made in the Rule 5 process? If not it seems we could have had our Kinley and ate it too without this 25 man conundrum. btw....I’m actually a fan of taking shots on Rule 25 players - even Haley last year. And I also can see the upside with Kinley, but am having real trouble making sense of how we got here (like most of you).
  19. Nice write up and a great reference made in regards to Trout. The dude is a once in a generation or even possibly a once in a lifetime talent. That said, I personally would be elated if Buck’s 2018 offensive numbers end up near the median of what he did last year and what Trout does every year. As you noted, a big chunk of Byron’s WAR has been defense/base-running and that the bat tool is the one thing keeping him from superstar status thus far. Somewhat relatedly, man watching him chase those low outside sliders gives me young Tori Hunter flashbacks lol.
  20. For a guy looking to walk, Joe sure has done a lot of hitting. Call me crazy, but I’m left scratching my head with ascertaitions that a three-time batting title winner (as a catcher no less) somehow has a flawed approach at the plate.
  21. I’m a huge Escobar fan. According to this from the Pioneer Press, they will both get their opportunities: “We’re going to ask (Escobar) again to step up and be a big part of this,” Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey said. “He’s worn that jersey and been fine with that before. And Adrianza is somebody we really liked last year when we got him. Those guys are in a great spot to step up for us.”
  22. Napoli was playing with a torn ligament in his right hand for much of last season, and man it sure showed up in the eye test in watching his ABs. Despite his age, I see a healthy Napoli as a bounce back candidate - perhaps even in a big way. As many of have noted, a Napoli signing would probably displace Vargas. I’m in the camp that would have liked to have seen him do his thing for a full season but some of not getting to do so is on Vargas himself (as opposed to circumstance and discord with Molitor). Perhaps instead of daily moonshot competitions with Sano his time could have been better served working on his overall plate approach - just saying. I think the tiebreaker for me in a Napoli vs Vargas sense, is the scaring the hell out of the opposing manager thingy. I sure like the idea of having a healthy Nap available for late inning damage despite this age of short benches.
