  1. Yours is the right approach IMO. Twins should always be looking to upgrade, every year with guys that can be here for a few years. People say they aren't ready to contend next year. Yep, they probably are not. But getting a 26 year old stud pitcher should pay dividends for 3-4 more years. When a chance to get a real stud or difference maker is there, if your team can make it happen without screwing up your roster or sadly payroll in the Twins world, you should do it. Waiting around for every player to have career years or be "ready" to contend is a never ending battle with no end in sight.
  2. I don't get why people think we can trade B and C level guys for one of the better pitchers in the national league that is young and under control. To get this guy, they are gonna ask for your 2 top prospects, plus someone from your starting 5. Scrap heap guys won't do it. They will want 2 of Lewis, Graterol and Kiriloff. You aren't getting by without including at least one of them unless you give up Rosario or Berrios. If you can make the trade without giving up one of those top 3 prospects and only one of Rosario, Buxton or Sano, I'd let them take their pick of 3 or 4 of anyone else on the roster and minor league system.
  3. Are you serious? For real? One of Rooker/Sano = question mark prospect that strikes out tons. Cave - 4th or 5th outfielder Romero - possible 2-4 starter May - oft injured guy that hasn't been able to be counted on much yet Gordon - utility infielder at best projects to be nothing special I do that trade in a heartbeat if that's all it takes and laugh my arse off the whole time. The Mets would never do that deal though.
  4. You might be right, I have just had enough of the Lance Lynn types, or Logan Morrison's. etc. Just feel as if these spots could be filled from within the organization. At best these types of signings turn into average or slightly below average players for us most times. Maybe you don't have to buy big name free agents. Maybe trading for the type of studs needed and then extending them would be the way to go? I just am of the belief that improving the talent level and getting ballplayers with high ceilings is in order. Is there some risk in that? For sure. But I just don't feel the mid level range type of players are going to get us anywhere.
  5. I don't agree with this at all. After last season, what was everyone thinking this year would have been? We thought we would compete. And we wanted guys like Santana around to help out that rotation. A healthy Santana producing like he did in 2017, a Berrios that was improving and a Gibson that looked like he finally figured it out is what they had going into 2018. That looked pretty good to most of us. What do you really think Santana would have brought back in a trade? Or who else would you have dumped?
  6. He would be good in there. Always was a good talker. I'm sure people would tire of him too, but I always thought he had good things to say.
  7. No, 100%. Buy a stud, or don't buy at all. Doing what you suggest here is how you end up with Logan Morrison's, or Ricky Nolascos. I'd rather they just fill in with players from their minor leagues than shop in the bargain bin, then aim higher when they identify someone studly they want. Does it have to be this year? No, and it doesn't have to be Machado. But the C level free agent should be a thing of the past for this team unless it is filling a hole that there is no one in their system able to do so.
  8. This is classic Twins/Terry Ryan/Cheapskate thinking. DH is a position that should hit well and for power. Not a place to put a guy that is decent at everything, but not particularly good at anything. When is the last time to Twin have employed a good DH? Get a bat. One that hits for power and gets on base. Or move Sano over there and be done with him in the field.
  9. Give him a glove and tell him to catch the ball. 1B easiest position to fill defensively on the diamond. I'm not worried at all having someone or anyone play out of position for a short stretch to play 1B.
  10. Span was good right away when he came up. In fact, his first couple years in the league were some of the most productive of his career.
  11. Well, if they did, he didn't take it. That means they were low on years or money most likely. I don't know, I guess when I have guy like this around, I give him what he needs. I am not saying he is a superstar, not by any means. But the guy is a hard worker and a winner. Tough little guy. If it would have taken 25 million over 3 years, I would have done it with a smile on my face.
  12. I agree if he wasn't gonna sign they did a good job getting something for a half season of him. Hopefully at least one of the guys pans out.
  13. I don't know a ton about the guy, but young, full of energy, good communicator, analytic. All good things. This is the type of hire I wanted.
  14. No, they should have just offered him an exention and been done with it. Didn't have to give a QO. They got him for 7 mil a year. That's not much for a young, productive ballplayer that can hit and field. Not to mention the way he was as a leader/person, etc
  15. That's EXACTLY the kind of thing the old regime did. Offer something they know won't win the bid, then tell the media how close they were or how hard they tried. I'm not saying you are wrong in your analysis, but this new regime really hasn't proven to do anything bold as of yet. They've traded away guys that weren't coming back next year. Signed short term deals for low dollar amounts on Free Agents and traded one potential stud relief pitcher. Maybe they will, this offseason is huge for them.
  16. I agree with you. It is something to bash our front office on. That they let a top 10 relief arm in the league go for a couple of a team's 10-15 ranked prospects. If Houston were to turn around and flip him this offseason, he probably fetches a teams top 5 prospect +, or even better. Now when they go out to look for another arm like Pressly, they are going to have a sign someone to a pretty hefty deal, or deal prospects much better than the ones we got back for Pressly.
  17. This is where I am at. It doesn't have to be this massive spending spree. I just want the Twins when they do decide to spend on free agent, to go after ones that will be difference makers. Same in trades. I don't like signing average to below average guys and wasting money on them when these spots can most likely be filled from within your system for little to nothing money-wise.
  18. I can agree with this post, but want to also point out that history has shown us the Twins generally lowball, then tell our media how hard they tried. And when you are talking about guy like Ricky Nolasco or Jason Castro? Yes, they might have overpaid, but I would argue that these types are not even worth going after in the first place and a good example of the type of mid level guys the Twins generally sign and generally never work out. Your free agent and trade success "probably" goes up when you are only signing top end guys or trading for A level talent. It's when you aim so long all the time that you are disappointed. Or course Nolasco didn't work out here. He was never any better than the guys the Twins hired him to replace in the first place. I'd like them to go for the big guys, overpay them if you have identified them as people that will really help your club. If you still can't get them, then fill in with your home-grown guys and try again next time. The never ending signing, trading for and heck even drafting/international signing that kind of talent has put this program where it is right now.
  19. Love these 2 guys. Rosario right now, is the best player on this team. Austudillo, still not sure what to make of him. But I am 100% certain he should be on this roster next year. In spite of being a little chubby, the guy is a good athlete and is a ballplayer.
  20. I'll give you a hint. It starts with a "P" and sounds like "ohlads". LOL
  21. 4 million for a middle infielder and 5 for a 1B? Spend this kind of money and you will get more of the same C level talent they always go for. If this is what they want to do, just fill in with guys already in your system that don't cost anything. That or go big.
  22. So by doing what they have done, they haven't been even close. In fact, they've been terrible more than they have been even mediocre. Maybe time to try something new? I'm not against holding onto some prospects. I'm not totally for signing veterans to long term deals, or trading guys for big names. But there needs to be a mix of both. The main thing is, the Twins need to aim higher. HIGH END talent. Not mediocre crap that's cheap. That means not signing 3-4 C level free agents each year. It means signing 1 A level guy for the same money it cost for those 3-4. It means not trading one middling prospect for #4 starter or fringy bullpen piece. It means trading from the top of your prospect list for guys that are towards the top of the MLB heap.
  23. Wasted the careers of Santana, Hunter, Mauer, Morneau and Nathan. Just think about that once. What a great core. 5 All stars in the prime of their career. Did they help them get over the hump? Heck no, they had Jason Tyner starting playoff games as a DH for christs sake.
  24. Cliff Lee in 2010. Coulda had him and made a run. Too scared to dump Hicks, Ramos +. Instead they got a relief pitcher that wasn't much good and cost a ton and a catcher that was terrible.
  25. I'm with you. They haven't produced one out of their system since M&M. Aside from that, anytime they've had a chance to sign or trade for one, they've been cheap, or wouldn't let go of prospects that have so far shown very little to help the club.
