  1. But the point is, our scouting department got it wrong. Way wrong. It was obvious after about a week that the catcher was no good. Don't they watch these guys play? Or are they just that dense? Same with when they traded for Delmon Young. After watching the way he took at bats and played defense for a week or so, it was obvious this guy would never amount to much.
  2. I'll be honest. I don't care what happened. He wasn't charged and that's all that matters. If he comes to spring training in shape and ready to work, then he has done his job. Get all fussy and cut a guy like this and I will bet it's about 99% certain that some team with their crap together signs him and turns him into the stud hitter we all know he can be.
  3. Twins need to identify the 2 best arms in free agency or trade and get them. Overpay or deal your guys to get them. Preferably guys under the age of 30. No low end guys, fliers, etc. Get the cats in here that throw 97 with hammer breaking balls. They won't because they are the Twins. But this is the quickest way to get yourself back to being in contention IMO. And it's simple. Most likely all it costs is money.
  4. At some point you have to try. Twins really never have. It's always a halfway effort, or a B or C level signing. Or trading away your B prosepcts for C players, etc. That and the fact they haven't developed hardly any players lately and have traded away all kinds of players that have had success elsewhere makes it very frustrating to be a fan of this team. Just once, I'd like to see them go out and sign a true stud. The best player at their position. Or trade our best prospect or 2 for a real difference maker.
  5. False, you are cherry picking to make him look bad. Look at his career numbers. Then realize he's got a cannon for an arm and plays his ass off every game. He's slugged around .500 the last few seasons. The guy has serious pop in his bat. I will give you the plate discipline, but here you have a corner outfielder with pop, plays pretty good defense and is in his prime.
  6. What depth is that of what you speak? Buxton? Kepler? Cave? So far none of them are better than average or below average outfield pieces. Rosario is the best hitter in this lineup and plays a good outfield. The outfielders you are counting as depth are either in the minors, or play at best at a replacement level. Aim higher for once, seriously. It would be one thing if Kiriloff was up here and producing, but the guy hasn't played about A ball. There is as good a chance he flops, than he is a major league starter capable of playing as good or better than Rosario. Trading Rosario only happens for me if you get an ace pitcher back. That is it, he is untouchable in my eyes. Rosario + Gordon or something for Degrom? Maybe then, but that's about it. You know that won't happen. I would see the offer for him being some kind of BS prospect and a middling type ballplayer. Not worth it. Go for high end talent or go home. Kepler, I just don't see him bringing back enough to make it worth trading him. He is worth more to us than anyone else.
  7. Trade Rosario?? I am going to have to strongly disagree with this kind of thinking. Always playing for the future sucks. "Our prospects will take over!!" Or, "let's play some 5th outfielder fodder and try to pass them off as major league corner outfielders? Don't like it. Here you have an above average outfielder that is a hell of a hitter, he's young. plays with fire every game and you want to move him? Kiriloff, if you haven't noticed is in A ball. Might he make it and be better than Rosario? Yes, he might, but chances are he WON'T. Kepler? Why move him for what will probably amount to a bench player type? Because that is all he is worth on the open market. I'm sick of getting smoked in every trade we make.
  8. I think it MIGHT be time we admit the fact that Sano is never going to play the field. And I also think it might be time to admit that Buxton will never hit. It was plain as day the first week he was up, that Buxton possesses little to no hitting skills. He just doesn't. I don't know how scouts could have missed on this guy so bad, he has no clue at the plate. Sano needs to just focus on hitting and not worry about playing the field. DH him and be done with it. Take the extra reps at the plate and become one of the best hitters of this generation. All he does is get hurt when he plays in the field anyway. If it were me, I would work on Buxton bunting the damn ball, hitting it into the ground, and stealing bases. He will never hit for power the way he is constantly guessing up there. This isn't Rickey Henderson here, he's very similar to that guy the Royals had a few years ago that could run like hell and field, but not much else. I honestly hope I am wrong here, but if what we have seen so far is any indication, this might the road to take. It sucks, but these guys probably have 1 year left of full time player status and then its time to move a different direction. All of that said. There is NO WAY I give up and trade these guys or release them. We have seen it happen too many times and even as bit players, these guys are plenty valuable. Keep them around. But be prepared if it doesn't happen this year to move from them being your cornerstones.
  9. Well, our minor leagues hasn't really produced anyone since the M&M boys. Obviously there were a few, but very few difference makers. That's IMO, the largest problem with this team. Kids perform in the minors, then come up here and do very little. Maybe the leagues they play are not good? I don't know, just seems like minor league numbers haven't translated around here for quite a few years now.
  10. I'd say Berrios, but Gibson had a great season also. I give it Berrios because he has more left to improve. I honestly don't see Gibson being any better than he was this past year. In fact, I'd plan on him trending down from here on out if I was running the show. Contractually, I wouldn't do anything with any of them. If Berrios makes it the next couple of years and keeps improving, go ahead and extend him then. There is too much that can go wrong to give him big money right away. Gibson, we have seen him capable of being good yes, but have also seen him be pretty poor as well. Make him prove it again next year. Unless he would be willing to sign an extension that locks him up for 2019-2021 at a reasonable price, then I guess I'd listen.
  11. Sign me up. A winner. That's what Thome was. Not sure if he would be good or not, but he's a great guy and would sure be interesting and probably put butts in the seats.
  12. I don't care one way or another that Molitor was fired. I think he probably got the axe because all of our young players this year didn't do so well. Sans Eddie Rosario anyway. We all had to know also, that he is not Falvine's GUY and that they have probably been waiting to get rid of him and would have done so last year had they not made the playoffs/manager of the year, etc.
  13. Well, kind of. They are all C level guys to begin with. And they gave you C-D level production. These are the types of moves the Twins need to quit making.
  14. Because they should bring in a DH that's gonna mash or put Sano there and find a 3B. DH is the one position you don't have to be any good at anything else but hitting for power. Shouldn't be too hard to find one.
  15. If they don't give that guy a spot next year it's a tragedy. He's a damn winner, can't they see that? I'll take him at the very least as a backup/bench player. The other 2 catchers are boring and not that great anyway. Garver can hit, but is not very good behind the dish and Castro is a terrible hitter and doubt he comes back to do anything worth a snort anyway after his injury. Why not give this guy a chance?
  16. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/howarry01.shtml Before the contract, which is what got paid for right? Argue all you want, when Howard signed that deal in 2010, he was a flat out bopper. Did he suck after? - YEP!!
  17. He said he wasn't a good player when he signed the contract. Which is just not true. He hit 58 bombs one season for cripes sake. He got paid for what he did in the past, as did Mauer and most other players. Fell off a cliff though after that extension, there's no doubt about that!
  18. If Mauer had stayed behind the plate and not had his concussion, no one would ever be questioning that contract. As a catcher, producing where he was, if he could have kept that up for a number of years, he might have gone down as one of, if not the greatest catcher of all time. It's too bad he had to get his brain scrambled and move out from behind the dish. The Twins were a much stronger team with Mauer back there.
  19. Ryan Howard wasn't a good player????? Top 5 in MVP voting for 4 years running and one MVP award in that stretch, but he wasn't good? Blasting 40-50 HRs a year? OPSing in the .900s on average?? I can agree it didn't work out great for them, but when Howard signed, he was a premier player in the league.
  20. That's just it. Why sign a washed up pitcher and waste money and a roster spot on him. This team is LOADED with #4 and 5 starters. Use you minor league guys for those spots. If you aren't going high end, save up money, save up prospects and get studs in here when you think you might need them. This type of thinking is why the Twins have been where they are the last 10 years or so. Middling guys and B/C level free agents or trades don't do anything to make you a true competitor. If you are wanting to go that route, just shut it down. Only sign or trade for studs/difference makers, or spots you desperately have holes. Your depth should come from your minor league system.
  21. Why go for a guy like Duffy when you have them all over in your system? Go big or go home. Either go for true studs, or don't do anything at all. Boredom. That's what the Twins will give you. Year in, year out. At some point take a chance. Or, don't do anything at all. I don't want anymore mid rotation pitchers though or .700 OPS level players being traded for, or signed by this club. Use you minor league system to fill those types of spots and if you are going to trade or sign someone, make it a stud. 1 stud>3 average players any day of the week.
  22. I hear what you are saying, but the smart money is on the Twins staying in rebuild mode and not being serious about condending next season. Would I like them to? Heck yes. But I see them going after more dumpster type #3-5 starter for no apparent reason and signing middle of the road relievers. To trade for the Mets studs, you will need to give up one of our top 3 prospects for sure. I am just fine doing that, but I know the Twins and many around here would just hate it.
  23. Yah, I'm sure we need to be real worried about building a roster. Dump heap signings and youngs guys with C level talent? If the Twins are serious, they fire Molitor the day after the WS, buy the best Manager available and sign Manny Machado. They won't do either and will sit on their hands until all of the good guys are traded away or signed to teams that want to win. Let Mauer have his time. If he decides to come back, who is getting knocked out because of it? Some AAAA player? Not a big deal.
  24. I don't want him to quit. I would however like to see him back here in a bench role. I think he still adds value to the team and I feel he has another good season or 2 in him. I think the deciding factor for him will be, does this team have a chance to win? He's looking at it now and seeing there is a pretty good chance the Twins are in it for another rebuild. If that's the case, he could and should retire. If management lets him know they are actually going to go out and do some wheeling and dealing to make a run at it, I could see him sticking around.
  25. Hmm, Correa won a WS and was the #4 hitter in their lineup. He also gets on base at a high clip and hits for power. Buxton has been a bust so far. Correa hurt this year, yep, that's about the only comparison you could do with those 2 guys are hitters. I agree, we need him to produce. But so far he has shown literally nothing at the plate. If he can't be better than a .200 or under hitter or learn to get on base at a .330 or better clip, he will be useless to this organization.
