    Interesting that this article has never appeared regarding Buxton. Yet the club has been forced to play someone OTHER THAN Buxton in CF an average of 100 games per year during his career. WAY more Jake Cave and Michael Taylor than Byron Buxton. Meanwhile, Buxton has also been inferior to Lewis offensively. CAREER Post-Season numbers: Buxton: 7 PA; .286 OPS Lewis: 26 PA; 1.119 OPS

    I can squint and see the club winning 90 games. Overall, I don’t see this club that much different than recent versions…in the solidly above average to barely average range depending upon performance ‘surprises’ and health. My pessimism is primarily grounded in health and the continued (potential) strengthening of the ALC competition.

    Good point. Fwiw…the BA list seems more of a “recent results” approach based on value delivered….prove it / track record. The MLB list seems like more of a theoretical upside/talent view…who you’d want for one game if you could pick anyone…type approach.

    I’m perfectly fine with the lost 2-3 mph off the fastball if it resulted in better command of the pitch. It hasn’t. Not so far. Meanwhile, despite the “stuff”, he’s never commanded his off-speed pitches consistently well, either. So….I guess we’ll see where this goes.

    I’m not sure anymore either. But it’s nothing that an AL pennant can’t fix.

    I’m thinking he rejoins club after the all-star break. The pessimist in me says that’s how long this injury will take. The optimist in me says it will take a SECOND hamstring strain (stretching a single in St Paul, etc) to keep him out that long.

The impression Festa made is that he has a mountain of work to do on the new approach that nobody knew he needed.

    Is Viola’s number retired? I actually don’t know. Only one CY with the club but a WS MVP makes up for that, and he was here longer and he was here first. Not saying he is necessarily more deserving…just saying, Viola’s number should be retired first and then Santana’s. Or just hang a banner that says “Changeup” and put both their numbers on it.😉

    My two cents are that he should have stuck with what got him here for another year and simply worked on command. He’s clearly taken a step back. Will it result in two steps forward? When? Then again, who am I to question an organization with an incredible track record of developing good major league starting pitchers like Bailey Ober and……well, Bailey Ober?

    He’s hit at every level. It’s reasonable to think that he can be a plus offensive player in the majors. It just comes down to defensive fit…that, and I am a bit wary of his recent minor-league right-handed splits.

    This. Right now, only one of Ober, Ryan, or Lopez would render a needle-moving player for 2025. Maybe that (hopefully )changes by the deadline or, more realistically, next offseason.

    Johan Santana had never pitched above high-A, and was 2 years younger than Casellano. He spent the first two years struggling some….like you might expect from a bottom of the bullpen guy. And then, he got better.

    “Allowing Castellano to continue to develop as a starter in the minors under the Twins' superb pitching development program…” Lot of drinking of the kool-aide going on…or the bar is just extremely low. Are we evaluating based on how many mid round guys have success at the AA and AAA level? Is that the new standard, or should we evaluate based on actual success at the only level that matters? For that, we have one starter (Ober)…two if you say that SWR was developed here and that he’s ‘arrived’ as a valuable starter. Relievers: Jax and Alcala? Certainly not Matthews, Varland, or anyone else yet. That’s not “superb”. Could it get better soon? Yep. There’s no guarantee, and the quantifiable results at the major league level are still very average so far. With Castellono, don’t over think it. If you think he’s more talented than the guys at the bottom of the pen, simply keep him and use him. Don’t fall in love with average-ish talent guys that you’ve talked yourself into believing are about to have a career year. Besides…you’re not the Dodgers or the Yankees. You NEED to pull a Francisco Liriano (or a Johan Santana) out of the hat once in a while to make a real run. Can always make him a starter later, as well. And, if they don’t think the upside is there, it’s moot.

    I realize this series doesn’t generate many responses, as the topic isn’t what triggers our opinions on players or front office, etc, Still IMO, the series is a great idea and a good read. Well done!

    Disappointing. Usually the “best bullpen in baseball” narrative makes it to April.

    And don’t forget the 7 plate appearances across 10 Twins postseason games since he’s joined the club.😉 I’ll go with “disappointment”. Availability is an ability.

    “And now, entering 2025, the Twins hope he can build off his first healthy offseason in over half a decade.” Honestly…this narrative is floated at least every-other offseason with Buxton…and it needs to die. Buxton’s health headed into a season has almost NEVER mattered in terms of the reason he can’t complete the following season. He has very consistently come up with new ailments to cancel seasons regardless of whether he was ‘finally’ healthy from the previous injury.

    Know when you’ve become a true Twins fan?? When you’ve fully developed and perfected this irrational sense of value from mediocrity…and the ‘stability’ that invariably sustains it.

    This is EXACTLY where he’s going with this…and against the advice of his agency, who told him to stay quiet until the investigation is completed. And so, the agency promptly dropped him.

    Agreed that integrity of the game is not number one here. It’s integrity of the player. Character of the player. If It’s a “mistake”…it’s a mistake you only get to make one time. The ultimate act of selfishness and betrayal in a team sport, and in a professional setting where results are highly correlated to future income. Professional players will never accept and trust this guy. He committed premeditated, first-degree murder on his professional career.
