  1. Hicks would benefit from batting right-against-righty in a development setting, i.e. AAA. On the other hand, Hicks has taken a positive step on his own initiative, which is a sign of maturity. It's an interesting situation. The fact that he got two hits yesterday against right-handers shows that he's on to something. What Hicks needs now is, a little less yelling and screaming. I don't think Scroggins did him any favors by pissing all over his decision to abandon batting lefty.
  2. I think Santana has a lot of potential, but he really can't play shortstop. Can he learn? Who knows? Send him back to AAA if you want him to develop his shortstop skills. He's doing better in CF that anyone on the roster except Hicks, so using him as this year's backup CF is working for me.
  3. Parker -- Your article is incomplete! I agree totally that Bartlett had no business in the OF, and Escobar has shown that he should stay in the infield. However, from what I've seen, Santana and Nunez look pretty good out there. What say you about them?
  4. If you hold someone accountable for bad pitching performances by releasing him, maybe he learns from that and does better someplace else. My beef with the Twins is how often they ran Pelfrey out there before replacing him with Deduno. Worley turned out to be a mistake and they cut him loose. Good riddance, I say.
  5. It has been a lot of fun watching the Twins misfits take it to the other team, when no rational person would give them a chance. These guys are playing hard, I'd say maybe playing over their heads a little bit, but they seem to pull it off as often as not. Escobar hitting a walk-off home run to win a game? I never saw that one coming. Hughes out-pitching Verlander? (Yes he did -- did you watch the game?). I never saw that one coming. Twins taking the series from Detriot on the road, with Danny Santana and J. Pinto coming up with key hits? What is this, the Rochester exhibition game? I don't know about you, but these guys have me glued to my TV set.
  6. Sunday's game blew my little mind, to quote an old Donovan song. As Nick Nelson tweeted, the Rochester Red Wings infield was playing outfield for the Twins by the end of the game. Nunez in left, Santana in CF, Parmalee in right. And you know what? They looked pretty damned good doing it. Nunez made a running catch of a foul ball down the LF line like he'd been doing it forever. Santana called everybody off to take that blooper. I never want to see Escobar in the OF again, and I do not want to see Santana playing SS until he actually develops, you know, SS skill. Don't you guys remember Santana throwing the ball to Dozier for a failed force play instead of making the easy out at first, in the Saturday game? That would have been the third out of the inning, and we might have won that game. Santana at shortstop = dumb move. Santana at CF = fast enough to play CF, so let him start until Hicks finds his bat.
  7. Agree completely. That's why I think Pinto will be demoted to AAA as soon as Arcia or Willingham are ready. The team really needed a DH, and Pinto delivered, but he's not ready to be up here as a catcher.
  8. After the way this season has started out, I'm sure Ryan is asking himself "why did I spend all that money on free agents?" The starting pitching is terrible, except for Gibson, and the beer league offense is raking.
  9. I dunno what to say man. "Beer League" Colabello is driving me nuts. He stands 10 feet from the plate and hits everything. As long as he can keep doing this, I'm taking the over.
  10. Well, there's a wet blanket if I ever heard one. I am not predicting playoffs either, but I can't rule it out after the Twins' hot start offensively.
  11. Nick - I agreed with everything you said except for the remark about Presley. Good riddance to that no-hit AAAA player. Now that he's healthy again, Mastroianni is a much better reserve OF due to his offense.
  12. I am still scratching my head on the Nunez deal. The Twins biggest problem right now is pitching, and weakening your defense will make that problem worse.
  13. My takeaway from the Chicago series is, this season is shaping up to be a LOT more interesting than I thought. The Twins scored 19 runs in three games. 19 runs! No doubt swirling winds and cold pitchers had something to do with this, but on the other hand, Mauer and Dozier didn't do **** at the plate. When those guys get going, things might get even better. Averaging 6+ runs a game is not sustainable, of course. But I was expecting Joe Mauer and the 7 dwarves, and that's not what I got.
  14. Let the Buxton countdown begin. Buxton + Hicks fixes the OF defense problem. Adding Buxton means that Kubel and Willingham are never in the lineup at the same time.
  15. Diamond -- good riddance. Presley -- showed nothing this spring. Parmalee -- got beat out by Colabello. I don't have a problem with any of those moves. Bartlett didn't win the job; Gardy gave it to him. My reaction is, it's time to put Gardy on waivers as well. Don't be choosing incompetent veterans as bench players. If Bartlett is any good, let him prove it in AAA. My hope is, Mastroianni proves it in April and is up here in May.
  16. i'm not convinced Diamond will be claimed. If he can't make the Twins starting rotation, where else is there?
  17. Your 2014 Twins are on full display today. Four hits through 7 innings, and one run (Arcia HR). And yet we are winning the game due to the outstanding pitching performances. So what does it all mean for 2014's won-lost record? Damfino.
  18. Nick, you're definitely working on the right problem. The pitching looks pretty damn good, and the hitting looks worse than last year. I think the Twins give up too much defensively to move Dozier back to SS. If the Twins had an above-average infielder at 3B, it could work. With Plouffe at 3B, the Twins need Florimon's range. With so much help on the way in the minors (Sano, Buxton, Rosario), and the improvement Arcia has shown this spring, I just can't see the Twins doing something short-term to get a few more wins during the first half of the season. Your short-term fix is Kubel. I think Buxton gets promoted in June or July, moving Willingham to DH and Kubel off the team. If Buxton gets hot, the whole team will ignite. I'm thinking to buy more tickets in July-Sept than April-May, how about you?
  19. A fine report, Thyrlos. Very interesting, and concise too! Seth, please take note! :-)
  20. I agree. Santana has a lot of talent, and could be the "good enough to play for a contender" shortstop that thyrlos is looking for. He just needs more development. If he proves himself at AAA, he'll get a fast promotion. I think the Twins want Florimon to be the starting SS because Escobar can play every infield position. I don't see Florimon as the utility infielder, do you?
  21. I would really like the Twins to find a way to get Tonkin into this bullpen. Tonkin has been unhittable this spring. Vance Worley is meh.
  22. Wow, pretty amusing thread. Let no good deed go unpunished, eh Twins?
  23. Yeah, no kidding. The pitching will be much improved, but the offense will be worse than last year with Morneau gone. Dammit, Sano, why didn't you get TJ surgery done in the off-season??
  24. Well, I certainly had a different take on Meyer's performance. Fastball velocity? Check. Fastball location? Check. Shoulder seems OK after throwing? Um, no idea. How can you write a story about Meyer's first appearance without letting us know how his shoulder felt. Worthless story, John.
