  1. I like Polanco over Nunez for utility IF, and potential replacement for Dozier at 2B. I also like Buxton over Schafer/Hicks/Santana in CF. He's better than any of them now. Why wait? I like Meyer for the 3rd starter, never mind the 5th. Although I think Molitor's personality meshes much better with Ryan's, I am having buyer's remorse and wish the Twins had chosen Dougie Baseball. Molitor is an incrementalist, and this team could be a LOT better if you are willing to put up with a few rough edges.
  2. I share your concern about the bullpen. Even if Pelfrey and May turn out to be excellent relief pitchers in 2015, the bullpen still looks below average. Now, if Meyer wins the 5th starter spot and Milone drops to the pen, it starts looking a lot better. Now you can afford to use Fien in a lesser role and give a young pitcher like Tonkin a chance to develop in a "get me one out" kind of role.
  3. My hope for Arcia is, he learns to take a walk. Make the pitcher throw a strike. An increase in HR would be a nice bonus. Vargas is the power hitter I have high hopes for this season. He's a real student of hitting, and it's fun to watch him get up to speed against major league pitching. I can't wait to get Sano up here, and have those two guys fight it out over who bats cleanup.
  4. You guys are fixing something that's not broken. Santana is the best leadoff hitter we've had since Span was traded. He has shown the ability to wait on a pitch and hit it hard. He has outrun the throw to first on many infield grounders. My regression candidate for 2015 is Dozier, because most pitchers have learned not to throw him a high fast ball. In his second season, I expect Santana to improve, not regress.
  5. Without the home run power, he's a weak-hitting 2B. Not sure where you're going here.
  6. Gordon rated ahead of Polanco and Rosario? I imagine this is because he really will make it to the big leagues as a shortstop, unlike Plouffe and Dozier?
  7. With all due respect to Dozier's excellent season last year, it was an outlier. I sure hope he can repeat it. I think Polanco is a can't-miss second baseman, and one of them will end up being traded.
  8. Hughes and Vargas. I'm going with Vargas because, if he's the MVP it means he turned into the cleanup hitter the Twins haven't had since Morneau left, and Twins will make it to .500
  9. I have little doubt that Hughes, Nolasco, Meyer and May are all capable of a below-4.0 ERA. I just don't think Meyer and May are going to be given the chance to prove it. Too many starting pitchers under contract already.
  10. I give the Twins little or no chance to contend for the division title. I fully expect them to win half their games, but that ain't going to be enough, sports fans. I think the biggest problem this team will have in 2015 is, there are too many starting pitchers under contract. The Twins will have to decide early which pitchers will get Spring training innings. I think guys like Berrios and Meyer will not be given a chance to break through this "good enough" wall to win spots in the spring. The Twins can't win the division without 5 quality starters, and they are going to break camp with only 3 (Hughes, Santana, Gibson).
  11. IMO there is no friggin way that Hunter could be worse than Hammer in RF. I am scratching my head a bit about CF. Santana can cover more ground than the Hicks/Schafer platoon, but he wasn't always effective at a) getting to where the ball was hit, or [] catching it once he got there. OF defense remains a weak spot, no doubt about it.
  12. I see a lot coming together, but that outfield is still a freakin' mess.
  13. I don't get any of the "Twins are not a contending team" discussion. Twins scored more runs than anyone in the last couple months of 2014. Five competent starters should be enough to push the Twins into contention.
  14. Well, actually, Escobar is hitting as well as Plouffe and is a much better fielder at 3B. When Santana comes back where does he play? If he is your starting SS, that puts Escobar on the bench. If Plouffe were traded, I don't think the Twins would notice his absence. The problem is, what could you get in return that would be worth having? Can Polanco play 3B?
  15. I agree with Seth that Suzuki is the Twins best trade chip, among position players. On the theory that any player can be had for a price, I say sure, listen to the offers. But if someone offers a B-quality prospect, hang up the phone! Suzuki is an all-star major league catcher. The Twins really need him. If Suzuki goes, who would replace him? I think Pinto has yet to prove he can play the position. It would not surprise me if Pinto spends the next couple of years in AAA, at which point he is either your catcher of the future or the guys at the A level today will have passed him by. I really don't want to put up with watching AAAA catchers like Hermann and Fryar for two years. Been there, done that (Twins have been an AAAA team for the past few years). My hope is, Suzuki is OK with a 2-year deal, and the Twins sign him to one.
  16. His value to the Twins is also at an all-time high. I'm not saying don't trade him. I'd talk to him first about what he wants to do next year. If he wants an extension, why the hell not give it to him? Who else do the Twins have for a catcher?
  17. I think Polanco's brief call-up will prove to be very useful in his development. Now he knows he can play at the major league level, which should give him a lot of incentive to work on his skills. I really enjoyed his speed and enthusiasm.
  18. I don't see any more FA pitcher signings. The only way the Twins add a veteran starter is by trading one of our projected 2015 starters -- there is already going to be a log jam. For example, Berrios is the real deal, and if he burns up AAA like he's been doing in the lower minors, we will all be clamoring for him to get promoted next summer. For another example, Pelfrey was once a really good pitcher, and might win a starting job out of spring training.
  19. The Twins are too inconsistent to go anywhere in the wild card race, and I don't see that changing until more young arms and bats get up here. I will be sorry to see Polanco go.
  20. Fixed it for you.
  21. Pinto sucks at catcher. He should work on his catching skills in Rochester.
  22. The offense is moving in the right direction, no doubt. Even without Mauer, the Twins are scoring runs. Now, the pitching, on the other hand, has been maddeningly inconsistent. There is no way the Twins will finish above .500 with the current group of starters. Did you see where May had an unusually bad outing in his last start? He gave up 3 runs in 6 innings. Oh, the horror. Come on Terry, do something about the pitching!!!
  23. If the Twins replaced Kubel with Pinto, and replaced Correia with May, I think they would finish above .500 AND continue the transition to younger players. There is no way in heck they will beat Detroit for the division, but a wild card spot? Why not?
  24. Santana has no business playing SS at the major league level. Gardy is right about that one. Hicks needs to be sent down to AAA, and my prediction is that's what will happen when Fuld comes off the DL. As for Willingham, he puts fans in the seats and you need ticket sales to finance your payroll. I am really enjoying his recent streak of home runs, and hope it continues.
  25. Prior only pitched for five years.
