  1. I don't get this at all: "It's not out of the question Pinto could take the starting job right out of the gates if he tears it up over the next month" We have had catchers before whose primary contribution was with the bat. Remember Matthew LeCroy? Why are you promoting a catcher just because he can hit?
  2. Arcia is not a good outfielder, and his long-term position might be DH. If Hicks can't hit, I say move Rosario back to the outfield.
  3. I definitely agree we need a dress code for our avatars. How else would we know when we'd found a good one? (What would Bartman do?)
  4. Offensively, I agree. I still think he has a chance to stick as a corner outfielder because of his superb defensive skills. The Twins signed three new starting pitchers (plus Pelfrey) who pitch to contact, and the Twins will need the best defense they can put on the field in order to keep opponents from scoring.
  5. One reason we thought we had a superior bullpen: The starting pitching was sooo bad. Un-watchably bad.
  6. I think Terry Ryan would rather have Garza than Correia. Wouldn't you? I think this is great news.
  7. What I like about the Twins offense for next year is, they don't need everything to go right in order to improve. If Hicks doesn't return to form, maybe Rosario wins an outfield job. if Willingham doesn't return to form, maybe Kubel does. If Plouffe shows us nothing, maybe promote Sano early.
  8. I think it's between Diamond and Duensing for the last starting spot. IMO the Twins will not open the season with five right-handed starters.
  9. He doesn't need a mentor, he needs AAA
  10. What I want to know is, is salary going to stand in the way of trying somebody different? I hate the idea that pitching 200 innings is somehow admirable, if your ERA is over 5. I'm looking at you, Correia.
  11. Pinto has all the offensive potential in the world, but he's a terrible catcher. He needs to get to league average defensively before he's promoted from the minors. No scholarships! I love AJ's attitude, and I wish the Twins had more players that really hated to lose. However, the Twins pitching staff needs all the help it can get, and a + catcher defensively is a minimum requirement. Give me someone who knows how to call a game, how to frame a pitch, how to throw a fast runner out, how to slow things down before they get out of hand. If he can hit better than Punto, I'm in.
  12. I'd rather overpay for Jimenez than Correia.
  13. Wow, 2 years $35 million. Here's what SI had to say about his new contract: "Over the last two seasons, Lincecum has posted a 4.76 ERA, which translates to a 72 ERA+ that is tied for the worst among major-league pitchers with 300 or more innings over those two seasons. The men he is tied with are Edinson Volquez, who was released by the Padres in August, and, in what should have been a giant red flag for Sabean, Barry Zito." Nick, tell me again why this guy made your short list of FAs?
  14. I'd rather have Rosario playing outfield than either Willingham or Arcia. If you're going to trade one of our blue-chip prospects, trade Arcia. The man is a strikeout machine.
  15. Catcher is primarily a defensive position. How good is Pinto at calling a game, settling down pitchers, throwing out runners, fielding bunts, setting up outside when the batter is obviously looking for an inside pitch (as in Pelfrey's last start against Toronto)? So far, he looks like a cheaper version of Doumit.
  16. +1. We paid for his recovery year. Now he's worth a multi-year contract.
  17. Now Nick, I read everything you write and I feel the same pain, but, I don't agree with this: "It's a baseball wasteland." The Twins just took 2 of 3 from Texas, right after taking 2 of 3 from Detroit. I gave up on the Houston game at 5-1, but came back for a really fun 8th and 9th inning. OK, I admit, it's like watching the Rochester Red Wings, except that the Twins ain't going to the playoffs! So let me look at this again from a different direction. What's the Twins' no-doubt-about-it, number one problem? It's NOT who's going to play first base, or which AAAA players are going to win backup jobs in 2014? It's starting pitching. Against Texas, Twins starters gave up one run per game. Pelfrey: 7 innings, 1 run allowed. Correia: 7 innings, 1 run allowed. Hendricks: 6 innings, 1 earned run allowed. Now, I'm not putting that much stock in Hendricks's excellent outing -- one good game a year isn't enough. But Pelfrey and Correia seem to have turned a corner somewhere, and I'm looking forward to seeing if they can do it again. How about you?
  18. Dang, the Twins took 2 of 3 from Detroit. Doesn't that mean we're better than them? My biggest beef is, we didn't hang the loss on Verlander.
  19. I have to think that anything that helps you get ready earlier to hit a fastball has the potential to hurt you with an offspeed pitch. Part of Albers success, I think, is how sloooow his slow curve is. 67 mph on the radar gun.
  20. Well, let me offer a correction. Twins need a future #1 pitcher. Doesn't have to be a star today. I can see Ryan trading the next Jason Kubel for the next Josh Johnson.
  21. This is what I think will happen. Twins need a star pitcher.
  22. There is a pretty big gap between what the Twins have for starting pitchers and what they need in order to contend. You can see the potential though. Defensively, the Twins are capable of playing at a very high level, especially with Hicks in CF. The offense is better with Willingham back, but it's still below average. Help is on the way for the offense, but not for the pitching staff.
  23. Dozier is doing something that I didn't think was possible, namely learning to hit for power after he gets to the major leagues. If he can keep this up, he'll be the Twins 2B for a long, long time. They are not going to mess this up. The Twins are back to a classic "strong up the middle" defense, with power hitters/slow fielders at the corners. I think Rosario will be changing positions again.
  24. The Twins are missing a front-of-the-rotation guy. Although I hate the Wil Meyers for Shields trade, Kansas City had the right idea. I'd be willing to trade a couple of blue chip position player prospects for a blue chip pitching prospect. Why trade for Stanton when Sano is two years away?
  25. The Twins have a pitch-to-contact starting pitching staff. Lots of ground balls. Florimon's range has been astounding to me. Especially when compared to the stiffs we've had playing there the past few years. I like to see good defensive plays, and I've enjoyed quite a few of them this year. The Twins lead the majors in double plays, and most of that is due to Florimon and Dozier. maybe Rosario can play 1B?
