  1. The offense is going to have to really step it up because the Royals are going to have a hell of a time replacing Santana's production in 2013.
  2. I'd take a run at Johnson and Hughes, for sure. I think Phil Hughes is a very capable #3, maybe even a marginal #2 away from New York. None of the Twins outfielders will be better than Ellsbury in 2014 but with Arcia, Hicks, and Buxton all requiring everyday ABs by the end of 2014 (possibly 2015 for Buxton but I think he'll be here sooner), the Twins are already cramped at the position and have other, more significant needs on the diamond.
  3. Yeah... I don't get why the Twins should be pursuing outfielders. They have a handful of them that project to be quality MLB players. Go find pitching. Go find a shortstop. Go find a first baseman. Those are positions the Twins need filled going forward (though it could be argued that they don't need a first baseman and that Plouffe/Parmelee could field a nice platoon).
  4. The problem with Game of Thrones is that nothing good happens, ever. There is one exception to this in the third book (but not the third season of the show) but it's far too little in a series that currently sits at the 4500 page mark (and a show that has over 30 episodes to its credit). It's exhausting and I was thoroughly sick of the series by the end of the fifth book; after the close of season three of the show, I'm not far from that point with that, either. Don't get me wrong, it's brilliantly acted and very engaging... But if I want to watch something so entirely depressing with absolutely no payoff, I'll go watch some documentaries on the Civil Rights movement. /still bitter that Martin baited us with a prologue about the Others and 4,500 pages later, we still know nothing about them
  5. And it still drives me insane.
  6. Harry S Truman disagrees with this statement. The guy at the top gets the credit and the blame. That's just how it works. He's responsible for the hiring and firing of the people on the ground and anything they may or may not do.
  7. Fair enough. Bad wording on my part.
  8. 3-4 times a week. Or 2-3 times a week. My point is that if he's catching 1-2 times a week and DHing 1-2 times a week, he's a valuable guy to have around because then you have a backup catcher, a part-time DH to keep him fresh, and a guy who can hit coming off the bench 2-3 other times a week. DHing 3-4 times a week and also filling the role of backup catcher means Doumit is a full-time player. I think I made it pretty clear that I do not agree with him in that role.
  9. No worries, it may have been Ryan's last deal of any significance. But your point is still correct in that Ryan is getting credit for a bunch of guys he didn't sign.
  10. I'm really not trying to be snotty but are you actually reading my posts? Where on earth do you get the idea that I want to see Ryan Doumit start 4-6 games a week? I've spent the past half dozen posts saying the exact opposite of that.
  11. This could be a problem. If Pinto can hit, he's a version of Ryan Doumit. But that wasn't a problem until about five minutes ago. Going into the season, Doumit was a valuable piece for the Twins.
  12. Then honestly, the front office needs to get a new manager. This whole "he's on the roster so he gets to play every day because the manager wants to WIN" argument is crap. If the front office can't pick up a guy and have him used logically and in a way that benefits the team as a whole because the manager disagrees, get a new manager. There is no excuse for the front office and coaching to be at odds with who takes the field on a daily basis.
  13. I didn't say Doumit was great at anything. I said he's a great guy to have off the bench and spot-starting.
  14. It's bad form to sign a guy to an extension and then trade him. That makes the franchise look pretty bad to any incoming free agents or players currently in contract limbo. I know it's hard to quantify these kinds of things but MLB is not a video game simulation. Real decisions and real human beings are in play here and not screwing over your employees or creating a bad clubhouse environment has to be a factor in how you treat your players. Look at how Johan reacted to the Castillo trade. It was pretty apparent that he was on his way out the door after that point and that any "loyalty" he had to the franchise was greatly diminished.
  15. Yeah, it's like treating yourself to Dairy Queen because you plan on working out tomorrow.
  16. Except that the Twins need a second catcher to rest Mauer. Listen, Doumit is not the problem. He's a great guy to have at C and DH 3-4 times a week. The problem is that this team also thinks he's a right fielder, every day something-or-other, and maybe mascot. Ryan Doumit is basically the Bizarro World Nick Punto. Awful defense but a capable bat and a great guy to use off the bench a couple of times a week. The problem is when some manager (we won't name any names) thinks that he needs to play every day, every game.
  17. Yes. This. Especially when said hitter is in the midst of the worst season of his career. It's possible that Doumit doesn't recover and at that point, you cut him loose. It's also possible that he has an OPS+ of 120 going into July of 2014 and you have a nice prospect coming your way because teams need a flexible bench bat.
  18. When you have a handful of high-upside players under 25 years old, I think mediocrity is just fine. The players may improve, they may not... But that's the nature of the game.
  19. Yeah, the first thing I thought was "what about the Royals?" On the other hand, the Royals' offense would be creeping toward mediocrity if they had Wil Myers this season. His 125 OPS+ would go a long way in that lineup. Any one prospect may wash out. The key is to have a bunch of them, like the Royals did and the Twins do. Accomplish that and you're probably going to field a pretty good team at some point.
  20. As for the next "Twins dynasty", they might want to shore up that whole "starting pitching" thing before they claim the Commissioner's Trophy.
  21. As a footnote, look at that 0-2 OPS for Hendiks. Hitters are OPSing .553 on an 0-2 count and that is way too high. In comparison, Kevin Correia has a .389 OPS with an 0-2 count. Mike Pelfrey? .370 OPS. Samuel Deduno has a .257 OPS with an 0-2 count. SSS and all but I think that's a fine example of why Hendriks has failed as an MLB starter. He's not pitching, he's throwing. And he's leaving way too many balls in the zone in pitcher's counts.
  22. This Batman/Superman movie shouldn't exist anyway so whatever. I think Affleck is okay but I'm having a hard time hearing him (visually, he has the look) as Bruce Wayne. DC/Time Warner continues to show that they have no idea what they're doing while Marvel is rolling in piles of money because they spent more than 15 minutes formulating a plan that consisted of more than "hey, let's smash Batman and Superman into the same movie, logic (and film continuity) be damned!"
  23. Well, 26-28 are generally the peak seasons. Guys like Buxton who has speed as a primary weapon can tail off significantly but it looks like Byron has enough of a bat where losing a step won't crush him. Either way, he's going to be up here as a 22 year old at the very latest. That means the Twins will lose arb control somewhere around 28-29, which is just "past" his prime.
  24. Which is fair enough, I simply think that the development cycle should be based entirely on the player's needs and fan "need" shouldn't be a factor. The fans will get 6+ years of Buxton and I don't see the point in giving them 2-3 weeks right now just for the sake of doing it. As for Sano, as I said earlier "I'm fine with either decision". I really am... If Ryan wants him here in September, I'm fine with that. It requires 40-man finagling but nothing that should be terribly difficult to do. If he wants to see him in winter ball and prep him for 2014, I'm fine with that, too. We're going to see the guy very soon. Whether that is now or in seven months doesn't bother me too much.
