  1. I've never cared much for Gardenhire. I think he's a bad in-game manager. He refuses to platoon, often makes bizarre calls to the pen, and generally, just makes me scratch my head, as if we're watching different events unfold on the field. With that said, nice piece Seth. I'm neutral on retaining Gardenhire as the manager. I simply think that the manager doesn't make much of an on-field difference unless he's exceptionally intelligent and studious (Maddon, anyone?). The players seem to like Gardy. During his tenure, we have seen very few clubhouse incidents and most of the time, this franchise was lauded for being able to put its head down and play some friggin' baseball. The players have often responded to him in positive ways, though that is certainly in question after the last three Septembers. I also understand people's problem with this move, that it feels a lot like the franchise is stuck in neutral. What I don't understand is the pure, childish vitriol spewed toward Gardenhire and his coaches over this choice. Part of this franchise's strength has been in its loyalty to management and the front office, trusting in their ability to see things through to their completion. It would have been easy to cut ties with Ryan in the late 90s but they didn't do it. It would have been easy to cut ties with Kelly in the late 90s but they didn't do it. And that seemed to turn out okay for everyone.
  2. Waiver claim and then trade before the waiver trade deadline. Pretty sure the Twins gave up a go-nowhere prospect to get Carl from the Indians.
  3. Kevin Correia's opening day start.
  4. I know this thread is tongue in cheek but if this descends into another pointless Gardy-bashing thread, it's going to be locked and infractions will be handed out.
  5. This is an insane way to judge two pitchers. One pitched in the AL East in Yankee Stadium. The other pitched in the NL East in Citi Field.
  6. Fair enough. Brian Dozier has an OPS of .735. Guaranteeing that Rosario is going to be a better hitter can't be done without a considerable amount of finger-crossing and well-wishing. No. He probably won't ever be as good as Dozier has shown this season. It's always possible but, again, finger-crossing.
  7. And that's a value judgment, which has to be made with every player. Personally, I think Rosario will gain value. He's still not a lock at second but everything coming from the team (and scouts) suggest that he's closer to becoming a MLB-calibre defensive second basemen with every passing month. That's really the sticking point. His bat should be fine and another year probably won't change much there... But if teams can pencil him into a middle infield spot without hesitation about having to transfer that bat to a corner outfield spot down the road (where it suddenly becomes average at best), his value will reach its true peak. Of course, Eddie could also walk in front of a freight train next June. Thems the breaks.
  8. Sabremtrics do not create a baseball star. Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout are stars in every era. The only application of sabrmetrics to star athletes is whether Trout is better than Cabrera, not whether one is a star while the other is not. Where the real gains in sabrmetrics comes is from guys like Mario Mendoza, guys who we now know have zero business being on a Major League roster, much receive 1500 PAs in a career. And you said "metrics do not improve play" and I disagree. They most certainly improve play by filling out rosters with capable baseball players instead of Mario Mendozas. The stars of the game don't change much but everyone around them does.
  9. Valencia got lucky and many were predicting a step backward. Maybe not a giant leap and then fall-on-his-face backward step, but regression none-the-less. Plouffe was only good for ~45 days. The rest of his season was bad. Not even mediocre, just bad. On the other hand, Dozier actually looks like the player we were told about in the minors. Steady hands, solid glove, good strike zone judgment. The only surprising thing is the power, which might decline next season. To boot, Brian's BABIP is quite a bit lower than expected, particularly for his style of play. He's not a speedster but he's not slow, either. Any downtick in power has a good chance of being balanced by an uptick in average and OBP.
  10. Short-term Twins? Sure. Long-term Twins? Eh, you'll have a hard time convincing me of that unless the GM was Epstein-esque (ie. sabr-heavy and very intelligent). I don't think the manager has any real control over roster construction past saying stuff like "I really like Punto, please keep him". Which is aggravating in its own right but will hardly make or break a franchise. No manager is ever going to say "I really like that Blackburn fellow, keep Clayton Kershaw in the minors".
  11. I love the idea but think it's premature for a few reasons: 1. I don't think Rosario's value has peaked. Teams will still be uncertain whether he's a second baseman and while he's young at AA, he didn't exactly light up the league with his bat. I think another go at AA and more time at second will see his value continue to rise. 2. I'm pretty sold on Dozier at this point but even I admit that there's a chance he's having a freakish season that cannot be repeated. I really don't think that's the case and the stats back me up but I still believe it's a mistake to trade away a middle infielder before knowing you have a solution at second base moving forward.
  12. When teams are playing better players because of those metrics, it absolutely improves play. Mario Mendoza does not receive 1500 PAs in the 21st century game. Better understanding of the game = better players receiving ABs = better play.
  13. I see two game threads breaking posters into two groups who both end up drifting away and not contributing.
  14. Quite possibly. baseball card vandals
  15. If you have concerns about the game threads, we're always open to hearing them. If you have any questions about moderation policy or would like to weigh in on things you see happening, PM glunn about it.
  16. Game threads are exactly what we want them to be... Basically, a group of people discussing the events of the game... and whatever else comes to mind. We want to keep it loose and interesting, not necessarily about in-depth game analysis on the fly (though that's okay as well). Basically, a way to hang out and talk with other fans like you're sitting in bleacher seats in the outfield when you can't talk with other fans sitting in the bleacher seats in the outfield.
  17. What browser? I haven't noticed this in Chrome at all.
  18. I have no idea. Given the 10+ years I've been fighting IE and its quirks, under no circumstances would I ever use that browser on an everyday basis. But hey, some IT/IS departments force it on their userbase. I have no idea why they do that, but they certainly do it. Anyone who forces IE on their users has never had to make code work in the browser.
  19. The first thing I did was add a line of script to the site that forces IE10 into IE9 compatibility mode. The Internet Explorer division of Microsoft is the worst. Really, they're just awful. I have NO IDEA what they're thinking most of the time. I imagine their mission statement looks something like this: 1. Piss off developers 2. Try to piss off developers more 3. Spend more time figuring out how to piss off developers 4. Provide a superior end-user experience 5. ...? 6. Profit! They've never gotten past #3.
  20. Hard to argue with this, honestly. I'm going to be mighty disappointed if Ryan doesn't pick up at least one guy who has a chance to impact the 2014 squad. I was fine with punting last season because the Twins aren't close to ready. But now, the payroll is going to drop to $60m-ish and help is on the horizon.
  21. Not in the mood. "Have a great day."
  22. Slappy Joe? Seriously. If you're going to post crap like that, go troll another board. Stop intentionally aggravating other posters, including myself.
