  1. And that, folks, is Clown Car Baseball™.
  2. Just got home, missed the first half of the game. With that said... PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES. PHILIP HUGHES.
  3. Plouffe's spray chart from last season: He went opposite field a lot, it just wasn't successful.
  4. Damn you and damn your windy city!
  5. You mean his career OPS of .933 with RISP, compared to his overall career line of .872? Or maybe you mean his career OPS of .988 with 2 out, RISP. This is why we have statistics, folks. Observation is so often tainted by what one wants to see, not what actually happened.
  6. My most anticipated game for the past four months. BRING ON PHIL HUGHES.
  7. In my opinion, easily the most important takeaway item from the first two games.
  8. I don't know if I commented about it in the thread but I thought Jokin's estimations were too high. My own estimations were 3-4 wins lower for the rotation, IIRC. He predicted a WAR around 8 while my own was in the 4-ish range, or roughly one win per starter (obviously, the top two guys would provide more, the lower two guys less). A vast improvement over 2013, still not good. And somewhat offset by low expectations for the offense.
  9. I believe this to be the case. For good or bad, umpires are stewards of the game. They make bad calls on occasion but in many cases, they make the game more interesting to watch through their inaccuracy, whether it's conscious or not.
  10. The greatest Hawaiian free agent signing, without a doubt. I'll need at least one more game to decide whether it's the greatest of all time.
  11. That's not really fair, Levi. I've never suggested the Twins were anything close to a .500 team. Our arguments have entirely boiled down to whether the Twins are a 65-68 or a 70-73 win team. Neither of those options are good. Neither are even mediocre. Our arguments have boiled down to whether the team is bad or awful. I don't see an optimistic prediction in there anywhere. The team spent $80-something million on pitching this offseason. Most of us are predicting a marginal "improvement" in that regard but only because they were so bloody awful last year that it doesn't take much to show improvement. That's not an odd spin at all. The team is still bad, probably not as bad as last year. I don't consider that optimistic.
  12. And Miguel Cabrera has a .700 OPS against Mark Buerhle, of all people. Mauer has a .558 OPS against Sale. Meh. Good pitching beats good hitting and guys just have blind spots against some pitchers. Sale is a tough pitcher overall and he's brutal against lefties. Nothing to see here.
  13. It's a fair opinion, I just happen to disagree. If played at DH twice a week and twice more at catcher, I think Pinto has more opportunity to grow as a MLB player.
  14. That's something else we haven't really talked about. If Kubel is anything close to his pre-2013 self, this offense is loads better than we predicted. Still far from good but not awful. And no, I'm not overreacting to two good games... Kubel and Hicks have not looked lost at the plate, which was a real concern going into the season. Simply by not looking lost, they have a good shot at being much better than they were last season. That doesn't mean either will be good, it just means they probably won't be terrible.
  15. The thing is that he should still get roughly 50 games behind the plate as the backup catcher... At that point, it becomes a question of value per inning. What's better for his development? 50 games with Mauer, Suzuki, and Steinbach watching or 90 games in Rochester? Personally, I think he'd learn more in 50 Minnesota games than 90 MiLB games, doubly so if you factor in that he would be facing top-tier pitching and learning how to hit instead of just teeing off on bad AAA pitching.
  16. Plouffe has always had the ability to look impressive over short periods of time. It'd be nice to see him put together longer and more frequent strings of impressive play.
  17. I think Pinto could learn a lot by being on the MLB roster. He can work with Suzuki, Steinbach, and Mauer to shore up his defensive issues. I have no problem with Suzuki getting the majority of starts early in the season while Pinto works on defense, gets the occasional start, and learns from veteran catchers. But not playing him at DH to get his bat into a rhythm... It's just baffling. For lack of another way to put it, it's really dumb. I don't understand why Gardy has such a problem with putting the second catcher at DH. It simply does not matter. I give Gardy a pass for a lot of things but this one can't be ignored. It's too obvious a decision. I don't understand how an intelligent man (and I do not question that Gardy is intelligent) cannot see how the downside of losing a DH for a few innings a season (less than half a percentage point of innings played) is outweighed by the benefit of getting Josmil Pinto MLB at-bats on a regular basis. *bangs face on desk until unconscious*
  18. Hah, I just posted the same thing. I'm not worried about Perkins. Bad games happen. First outing of the year, cold weather, fastball was only hitting 91. That will change if he's healthy (and he appears to be healthy). But the fact that Hicks looks competent at the plate is extremely encouraging.
  19. That sounds about right. Most people seem to think the team is between 69-74 wins. That's about where I'd put them, maybe on the lower end of that spectrum, in 70 win territory. Really, I'm pretty positive about the start of this season. Plouffe and Hicks have looked pretty good, which goes a long way toward making this offense respectable. I'm not really worried about the pitching, either the rotation or the bullpen. Overall, the staff should be bad to mediocre, which is miles better than what we've seen in the past few years. Overall, I think this team has the ability to be entirely mediocre if a few things go right for them... And that's enough for me right now. But really, the rest of the team's performance has been overshadowed by Aaron Hicks' play in the first two games, which makes me very happy.
  20. 1. We knew this team was going to be bad. The real question is whether it's 65 wins bad or 75 wins bad. 2. They've played two games. That is less than 1/80th of the season. 3. The Twins had this game in the bag and their All Star closer scuffled and then was let down by his defense. It happens. Whether it happens twice this season or once every two weeks will play out in time. 4. Two games.
  21. I believe that Gardy said Pinto will catch Hughes tomorrow. Though I don't know where the Twins will find offense without Suzuki in the lineup.
  22. The quote chain that just keeps on giving.
  23. Going into this season, I think we were looking for love in all the wrong places.
  24. Have I mentioned recently how much I dislike Pedro Florimon?
