  1. Vegas puts the odds in the middle. That way they earn money. They split what people are betting to guarantee profit. Don't turn this into a semantical argument. You know what I mean by "Vegas is predicting". If you want to argue that this is a 66 win team, I won't bother arguing that. It's close, though I think they end up at 70-72. But 100 losses? No way. That will require multiple injuries to key players.
  2. Despite obvious improvements, you need to see improvement from the pitching staff before you can predict anything but this team being a 100 loss team? How do you not see the inherent pessimism in this stance? I'm not being blindly optimistic; Vegas is also predicting the Twins to be better.
  3. Excluding Correia and Deduno, last year's rotation had something around a -6.0 WAR. Again, we don't need to see anything better than a 90 ERA+ to see a 6-8 win improvement from the rotation. They were THAT BAD.
  4. Possible? Sure. Likely? No. People are ignoring just how awful the starters were last season. Teams give 162 starts to pitchers. All but about FORTY (~25%) went to below replacement level pitchers. Think about that for a moment. Three quarters of your starts given to guys who shouldn't be on an MLB roster. The 2014 rotation alone could be worth ten wins over the 2013 version by not being anything more than "meh". And there's simply no way the offense, already bad in 2013, can give back even five wins unless Mauer gets injured. Hell, the offense might even improve if a few things go right.
  5. The pitching staff and offense were ranked 14th and 13th respectively last season; it's hard to envision the offense lapsing badly enough to offset the substantial pitching upgrades.
  6. The title of this thread is "is this the worst team of the last four years?" That requires a 100 loss season. I don't see how anyone could predict that without a healthy dose of pessimism.
  7. People aren't predicting 90 losses... I think that's about where the Twins end up this year, were I a betting man. The operative word is "worse". To be worse than a 96, 99, and 96 loss team, you need to lose 100 games. And given the pitching improvements, it takes quite a bit of doom and gloom to predict a 100 loss season.
  8. I don't see how they're going to be worse this year unless the pitching absolutely collapses. If you have a competent pitching staff, and it appears the Twins do, you're basically guaranteed 65 wins. Way too much doom and gloom in this thread. Yeah, the offense is going to suck. That's still a HUGE step up from last year, when both the offense and defense sucked.
  9. Initially, I thought the fifth starter job would go to Deduno but upon further thought, this makes more sense... Starting off the season with Gibson as the fifth starter gives him regular innings in the majors, something Kyle badly needs to succeed in the long-term. Deduno, on the other hand, is more experienced and should be able to shift from long relief to spot-starting without much difficulty, plus it mitigates some of his injury risk. I don't think either option is a bad one but I am happy to see the front office show confidence in Kyle.
  10. Bully for Kyle. Also, this is a good example of why we shouldn't dwell on statements made by the front office in the first week of March. Or put too much stock in anything in the first week of March, really.
  11. Or maybe we're just having a little fun with the fact that when Mauer was diagnosed with bilateral leg weakness, bloggers and posters were diagnosing him with everything from cancer to HIV. No, really. Not exaggerating. HIV.
  12. And that he should also hit more homers. Because, homeruns.
  13. Time to form a candlelight vigil for Iglesias. He's a goner.
  14. After last year's Hicks fiasco it doesn't surprise me that Santana was sent down, performance be damned. Though I certainly hope they're open to calling him up in 6-10 weeks if he continues to rake. He's close, I'm just not convinced that he's close enough to be on an MLB roster out of Spring Training.
  15. I'm going to cast a wide net in this thread. Tone it down a bit or we're going to start issuing infractions and warnings. This thread is not an open invitation to start whipping the front office for the umpteenth time.
  16. I blame Obama.
  17. I suspect that the organization isn't particularly impressed with Hicks for a few reasons: 1. He didn't play winter ball, something they wanted him to do. 2. He was out for nearly a week early in ST. I don't think this has anything to do with stats in Spring Training... When Gardy made the comment about not knowing where Hicks was and that he hadn't spoken to him, I muttered "uh oh". Right or wrong, I think Hicks has irritated some of the Twins brass.
  18. When the Twins signed Nolasco, I was very happy. When the Twins signed Hughes, I was ecstatic. He's the type of signing the Twins have badly needed for years. Young, big upside, currently on a down note from possible mechanical and mental issues from pitching in NYC and Yankee Stadium. Hughes is my bet to end the 2014 as the team "ace", putting up Scott Baker type numbers.
  19. Yeesh, let's hope not. Kyle will need to miss more bats than Nick ever did if he's going to be a consistent starter in this league.
  20. My thoughts exactly. In a way, his wretched play has been a blessing. 1. It makes the Twins' decision easy. 2. He has been so bad that it's unlikely that another team will claim him.
  21. It is meaningful. I don't think anyone would argue that. On the other hand, it's so team-dependent that it's doesn't tell much about that individual player's performance, only the team-derived outcome.
