  1. The Twins had Sano examined by Dr. Andrews after the elbow pain first popped up. He said that rest and rehab was the best solution. Short of sacrificing a goat in front of an ancient temple and fasting for six months, I'm not really sure what else people expected the team to do. They did all they could to handle this situation the right way. Criticizing the team doctors for Sano is seriously misguided and wrong-headed.
  2. Just echoing what others said but no, they don't.
  3. Not quite the same thing... Pavano's issues were mainly injury-related. He just couldn't stay on the field in NY. Hughes, on the other hand, is still in his prime seasons and his issues seem to be ballpark related. Maybe a younger AJ Burnett might be a better comp.
  4. Three years from now, I'd bet even money on Hughes being worth more wins than Garza. Not a slight on Garza but Hughes' upside and age gives him room to grow. Not saying the Twins shouldn't have signed Garza, just pointing out that past performance and expected future performance are not the same thing, especially when talking about aging pitchers with questionable elbows.
  5. RBI and Runs are far more overrated. Batting average is a repeatable skill and helps tell you how often a player made an out. There is value in that, though in a vacuum batting average is seriously flawed. RBI and Runs are heavily influenced by the rest of the lineup. In a vacuum they're not only flawed, they're basically useless.
  6. I'm not sold on Gregorius, either. I don't even know if I'd trade him for Pinto. But Florimon is a bad starter. A very, very bad starter. The guy makes an out over 70% of the time he comes to the plate.
  7. So what you're saying is that Gregorius would be an upgrade over Florimon without even factoring in that he's three years younger and has plenty of room to grow. Gregorius' fWAR was 1.3 to Florimon's 1.4 despite playing fewer games.
  8. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/ex-yank-hughes-fresh-start-twins-article-1.1703165 Pretty much a puff piece but I found it somewhat interesting that Hughes already bought a home in Minnesota.
  9. This is my thinking as well.
  10. The show somehow manages to make Breaking Bad look light-hearted. The show is so intense and so packed full of details that I don't like watching more than two episodes at a time. It's draining. Also, McConaughey just kills it in this show. Absolutely kills it. Possibly the best television performance I've ever seen.
  11. That the Twins are willing to spend more money if the right player is available, which renders the $80m payroll ceiling a figment of fans' imaginations.
  12. Two different articles quoting inside Twins sources, one mentioning the period around TwinsFest, another saying the Twins were in on Garza until the day he signed with the Brewers.
  13. Except that all evidence suggests they were in on Garza until he signed with the Brewers, or at least until January.
  14. Which is fine to want to see more spending... But the Twins payroll isn't necessarily at $80m because the Pohlads have demanded that to be the case. The Twins couldn't make up Garza's salary through trades. Correia could be traded, sure. Burton, probably, but he's not making much. But nobody is taking Willingham at this point, not for $7m.
  15. The article. http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Source_Twins_attempted_to_sign_Matt_Garza_to_3year_42_million_deal022214
  16. I'd have to dig up the article but it was offered right around the time of TwinsFest, well after the Twins had signed Pelfrey, Hughes, and Nolasco. The article was also referenced in the latest GatG episode.
  17. If the Twins are holding fast at an $80m payroll indefinitely, explain the Matt Garza offer.
  18. My thoughts exactly. SoS doesn't mean much opening the season. A lot of the fringe contenders or WC teams from last year will be pretty bad this year.
  19. This. Everybody gets a little blame for this mess. Ryan for not continuing to build a better than average MiLB system through the mid 2000s, Smith for trading away the assets Ryan did draft or acquire (Bartlett, Garza, Ramos). How different is 2011-2013 if those three players are on the roster? Smith inherited a bad situation and proceeded to light the damned building on fire instead of improving the situation.
  20. Agreed, my point was that I hope the Twins can fill those 4/5 spots with internal solutions going forward, leaving money open to go pick up truly good players instead of just filler.
  21. Which is okay for this franchise at this point. A quality #4 is still a huge step up from what we've had the pleasure of watching the past few years. But at some point, the Twins need to stop signing the Pelfreys of the world and go after legitimate talent (which they also did this offseason). I hope that we've seen the last of the Correia/Pelfrey type signings for a few years.
  22. There is a small glimmer of hope left for Plouffe and Parmelee. Pinto is a pretty solid prospect, though don't put much stock in his September numbers. His minor league numbers back up that he could be a solid player. Diamond has a chance to bounce back and be a #4-5 guy but nothing more than that. His 2012 was absolutely a mirage.
  23. Simply amazing show.
  24. Not saying this is your argument but it's hard to play any form of moneyball if you're elbowing for space at the best table in the room all the time. Sometimes going for the Latin player makes sense and I hope to see the Twins occasionally spring for a Sano type out of Latin America... But complaining that they don't do it every year is short-sighted. Projecting 16 year old kids is "rarely hit, mostly miss" situation and will lead to a lot of money spent with not a lot of return. The smart money is in widening the net and snagging the Lewis Thorpes of the world on a regular basis, which appears to be the Twins' strategy over the past few years. Hopefully it pans out for them and so far, it's looking like a decent bet on Thorpe alone.
