  1. Ryan has forced himself into giving up assets to acquire bullpen help because he didn't act on the problem sooner. To me, that might be the most frustrating part of this entire situation. If the Twins deal a good prospect to pick up a reliever rental, I'm going to lose my ****. Only go outside the organization and give up prospects after you've exhausted other options.
  2. Okay, this is going to be ugly. Since that bad loss in Oakland, here are the Twins losses and the bullpen "effort" that helped them to those losses. 7/18 - 2 IP, 4 Hits, 2 BB 7/19 - 5.1 IP, 7 Hits, 1 BB 7/21 - 3 IP, 3 Hits, 1 BB (Boyer absolutely screwed Gibson in this game) 7/22 - 2 IP, 3 Hits, 1 BB 7/25 - 3 IP, 6 Hits 7/26 - 2.1 IP, 1 Hit, 2 BB (this time it was O'Rourke screwing Gibson) 7/28 - 3.2 IP, 6 Hits, 1 BB Total: 21.1 IP, 30 Hits, 8 BB That's nearly a WHIP of 2.0. Jesus Christ.
  3. It wasn't last night's game. It was the past two weeks of watching the bullpen completely implode. Perkins was simply the last straw to break. It's not just giving up leads in close games. It's stuff like Gibson leaving the last two games with five runners on base and every one of them scoring. That took two bad starts and turned them into horrible, unwinnable games. The bullpen is doing incredible damage and a lot of it isn't showing up in their box scores. So, as bad as their numbers look right now, realize the situation is even worse than that.
  4. Well, it depends. I like what KC is doing right now because this is their shot at winning it all. If you asked me whether I think the Twins should have traded for Tulo or Lucroy this past offseason, I would have laughed you out of the room. But then the Twins started winning. Their window arrived a lot faster than any of us expected. Situations change. The front office needs to be agile enough to keep up with the situation. I don't think this team is that good but a good player at a position of need makes it better, both this year and next. As I've said multiple times, I don't really care what is done... but something needs to be done.
  5. I give Molitor a lot of credit for firing up this team, making a lot of smart analytical decisions, and stewarding the Twins to a winning record at the end of July. I also give Molitor a lot of non-credit for sticking with Danny Santana for far too long, using the bullpen in nonsensical ways at times, and not pressing Ryan to get him new players on the roster.
  6. It's way too early to make a call on Myers. It's not like he's flaming out of baseball due to bad performance; all his troubles are injury-related. He's a damned good player when he's on the field and healthy. Sure, that's a potential red flag going forward and it hurts to have a guy who can't stay on the field but injury problems are only a concern until they aren't. Myers could return to baseball and never miss a game again... or he could be out of baseball in 24 months because his body is broken. Time will tell.
  7. Aaron has a 1.5 fWAR. He has turned into a really nice player and I think it's somewhat sustainable. The defense isn't going to go away and it has been pretty good. I'd say a tick above average in center. That's really valuable. He's probably not a .900 OPS player but he has a shot at .800 in the long run if he maintains this approach. I think somewhere in the .750-.775 range is more likely. That's a pretty good number for a centerfielder in today's game, particularly one who gets a lot of production from OBP.
  8. And the reasons against the trade varied. I just dug up my first response to the trade: "At some point, the Royals needed to do this but I'm really skeptical that now was the time. The Royals lost 90 games last season. They're not on the cusp of winning, they were a really bad team last year. It seems to me that it would have been more prudent to wait until 2013 played out and see if your minor leaguers improved and became a solid group of hitters. Then you go after the "final pieces" to build a contender. You don't do it when 3/4 of your roster is still a question mark." The argument later turned into a fiasco and I made some bad arguments (as did many others) but that was my immediate response to the deal. Sure enough, they didn't make the playoffs in 2013. It worked out in 2014, though... Which was kinda my point. Now, in 2015, they're digging into the farm again because they need a pitcher. Overall, I wouldn't call it a bad way to run an organization because the Royals are good and they're winning a lot of ballgames... But I'm hesitant to call it an efficient way to run a franchise. How differently do things play out if the Royals win 80 games in 2013, trade Myers for David Price in 2014, and run with that roster through 2015? I wasn't against the trade or the thinking that went into it so much as I didn't like the timing of the deal. It felt like Moore was forcing the issue. As I said at the time, it's really hard to turn a 72 win team into a playoff team in one offseason.
  9. I'll third this. I haven't been this demoralized about a Twins team over .500 since... Well, I don't know if I can think of a time I've been this down on a winning ballclub. I'm pretty level-headed. I look at scenarios from as many perspectives as possible. I don't complain when a specific deal doesn't go down. But this bullpen problem was looming on OPENING DAY and by the middle of May, it was obvious IT WASN'T GOING TO FIX ITSELF. And what was done about that? Virtually nothing. Moved a few deck chairs. Cut the worst reliever but left several bad ones. If I was Terry Ryan, I'd be bloody embarrassed right now.
  10. I'm going to assume you didn't watch the game because no reasonable adult would make such an absurd statement after witnessing that game.
  11. You know what's most embarrassing about all of this? Everything.
  12. I didn't think it'd be possible for me to be more pissed off than I was ten minutes ago. Then Trevor May walked onto the mound and yep, there it was.
  13. I'm just going to say this once to get it out of my system: **** this team, **** this GM, **** this manager, **** this bullpen, **** this everything. ****.
  14. I agree that a lot of the reactions to this border on the comical but I absolutely loathe game hunting for sport. It's just such a douchey thing to do. Killing something just for the sake of killing is abominable and I question the thought process of anyone who participates in such a practice.
  15. Yep. Time for May to go back into the rotation.
  16. That's pretty hard to do when they haven't played at the same levels. You're making the stats fit your predetermined viewpoint. I'm not the one making outlandish claims about Buxton's talent level by suggesting his "hit tool" isn't great, despite the fact stats quite clearly indicate he's on a similar plane to McCutchen (and pretty much every scout on the planet disagreeing with you about Byron's hit tool). And seriously, Vince Coleman? The guy who hit 28 MLB home runs (6000 PAs) and didn't hit a single MiLB home run until he was in AAA? I remember Vince Coleman quite clearly, as he was one of my favorite players of the 80s. Byron Buxton is nothing like Vince Coleman.
  17. Buxton has a homer roughly every 43 MiLB PAs. McCutchen had a homer roughly every 52 MiLB PAs.
  18. Well, Byron can't leg out a home run and he has a slightly higher HR rate than McCutchen did in the minors. Again, that doesn't mean Buxton is Cooperstown-bound but you're vastly underrating his tool set.
  19. Buxton has a higher XBH per PA ratio in the minors than McCutchen did. He also has a higher BA, OBP, and much higher OPS than McCutchen did in MiLB. Whatever tools McCutchen had at age 21, Byron has as well (and probably more so). That doesn't mean Buxton is a shoe-in for the HoF but you're grossly underselling his abilities. There's a reason why Byron was the consensus #1 prospect in baseball for the better part of two years and it's due to a lot more than Byron's absurd speed tool.
  20. I don't know if I agree that Polanco is better than Escobar right now but I won't disagree with that take, either. The Twins have a few options, yet they continue to use the one we already know is really bad.
  21. Eduardo Escobar, I have just one request: Go 4-4 with 2 2B and a homer tonight so I don't have to see Danny Santana in the lineup for the remainder of 2015.
  22. I cannot default to Molitor's expertise when Danny Santana is one of the worst regular starters in all of baseball by every metric you can possibly find to evaluate a player. If there was some "well, maybe he's not that bad at that aspect of the game" side of Santana, I might feel differently about it... But he is literally horrible at every aspect of baseball right now. Santana has a lot of potential. None of that potential has been realized in 2015. None. Zero. Zip. Nada.
  23. The thing is, I don't really care if the Twins pick up a huge impact player like Tulo... Okay, that's not true. I do care. But I don't care as much as other people around here. If you don't want to mortgage the future for today, that's okay. I can live with that. I don't entirely agree but I can live with it. But what absolutely infuriates me is indecisiveness. If you're not going to improve today, Milone and/or Pelfrey should be off the roster for whatever you can get. The bullpen should have had a grenade rolled into it a month ago. Put Berrios in the Minnesota rotation. Put Duffey in the Minnesota pen. Hell, do almost anything. I don't care. That's my problem. The rotation with Pelfrey and Milone is not going to improve. You know what will make it improve? Trevor May. The bullpen is not going to improve. What know what might make it improve? Damned near anything. Be bold. Call up Burdi. Try one of the handful of AA/AAA arms and cross your fingers. And for ****'s sake, stop playing Danny Santana. Try something. Whether it's acquiring players or using assets on hand is less important to me than exploring options to problems that will not resolve themselves.
  24. That's one or two good pitchers Kansas City will not have going forward and it's a good thing for the Twins no matter how you look at it. The Twins are eight games behind KC and we're not even at the deadline. The two teams are no longer in competition with one another unless they meet in the playoffs so if KC depletes their organization to go for it this season, that warrants some optimism for what the Twins could become in the near future.
