  1. I'm not defending their past choices, simply pointing out there's no reason to insert a pet argument into a thread about Cueto and the Royals. With this move, I'm questioning how much the Twins should "go for it". The Royals were a better team yesterday. Today, they're significantly better. I'm not crazy about giving away assets just to make the WC game.
  2. Why do you feel it's necessary to slam the Twins instead of talking about this move and how it impacts the Royals? This is a good get for KC. With Gordon out and the rotation in flux, they needed to make a move of this kind and protect their division lead. Cueto instantly solidifies one of their few team weaknesses.
  3. Also infield pop flys, which drive down BABIP in a good way.
  4. "Would a package of Arcia, who will be out of options next season but still four years from free agency, and a pitching prospect - like Kohl Stewart - be too much to give up for a couple of rentals?" That's way, way, way too much.
  5. There's still one game left in this series. If NeedsABathia plunks batters because they have the audacity to bunt, you do exactly that. Piss that guy off. He's not the pitcher he once was and take advantage of that.
  6. Yes. Danny Santana's ability does not match his day to day play. It doesn't matter if you're a stat guy or a "watch 'en play" guy. The result is the same. I watch Escobar and see a middling shortstop who makes the plays. The stats confirm that. I watch Santana and see an immensely talented kid who screws up. All. The. Time. The stats also confirm that. In the long term, Santana might be the better player. Today is not the long term.
  7. I don't understand why people consider letting a FA walk some kind of horrible disaster. In some circumstances, it makes sense to use the player during his prime, get value from him, and walk away. This is especially true if you're a contender and that player helps you to the playoffs multiple times and you have a ready successor in place. I wouldn't make a habit of letting guys walk (try to at least get a comp pick when possible) but in some cases, it makes sense. Is Plouffe that guy? I don't know. That depends on Sano as much as it does Plouffe. Only time will tell.
  8. I don't see how the Twins could find more of a win-win situation, actually. You give up a little for half a season of Wieters - probably a bit more than you would if you just wanted him for two months - and then get him as a free agent without giving up more prospects. It fixes the short term, it fixes the long term... But it only costs the prospects of a short-term deal. Yeah, Wieters has flaws. So does everybody else.
  9. I'd be fine with either choice but I think Pierzynski is more likely because he'll cost a lot less.
  10. To make this even more confusing, here are Mauer's splits this season: RHB: .724 LHB: .758 This team is very confused.
  11. Absolutely, and that's why Hughes is still an effective pitcher. I only worry how effective he can be in the long term. It's hard to see him repeating his great 2014 without that K% returning at some point.
  12. Exactly this. Once Stauffer imploded, we saw trouble was almost inevitable. That's when more aggressive measures should have been taken.
  13. Slightly, yes, But I don't believe it's usually enough to be noticeable. Maybe a few points advantage.
  14. Funny how shortly thereafter, Gibson started dominating when he began missing bats (over 8 k per 9 in last 6-8 weeks). Strikeouts aren't just some sexy stat we drool over. They're indicative of a pitcher's ability to throw a pitch the batter simply cannot hit. That doesn't only happen with two strikes. It happens throughout an at-bat. And then there's the part where if a player makes contact, 30% of the time it turns into a hit. That doesn't happen with a strikeout.
  15. I don't think he's going to go Nick Blackburn on us, I'm just worried about his newfound inability to miss bats. He's performing now but I'd like to see that K% start creeping back up before the end of the season. It makes you wonder exactly what Neil Allen is doing with the pitching staff. Gibson spent the first six weeks of the season striking out what seemed like one guy per nine innings but later completely reversed course. I hope Hughes can follow suit.
  16. We rented a motorcycle and rode around a lot. Spent most of the time in the highlands. Wish we had spent more time in Edinburgh. Fantastic city.
  17. No, I think the Astros make the playoffs no matter what happens. With the acquisition of Kazmir, I think they're essentially a lock for a WC berth (I don't see anyone passing the Angels). It'd be nice to pass Houston but I think they're in the playoffs no matter what happens with the Twins. They're a good team that just got better.
  18. True, but 2011 was an unmitigated disaster for Hughes.
  19. One of the weirdest experiences in my life was stopping in a bar in rural Scotland, hearing John Denver come on the jukebox, and then witnessing the entire bar start singing along to the song. Scotland is ****ing weird, man.
