  1. I'm now heading toward the mid 19th century in White Trash. The sections about Andrew Jackson could easily be about Trump, or at least what Trump claims to be. Fascinating book. I can't recommend it enough.
  2. Heh, I'm surprised you even bothered to respond to that string of nonsense I typed.
  3. Listen, no one here is saying Sano has to be good at everything, we're only saying he has to be good at everything. Baseball is a lot like soccer, where players also don't have to be good at everything. With that said, I think we can all agree that Sano should be good at everything, even if he doesn't need to be good at everything.
  4. I'd be happy if Sano can cut his K rate to 200 a season. Given his approach and today's game, I don't think he'll ever dip much below that point.
  5. I don't believe this at all. A good working environment allows experienced people to assist inexperienced people. If Santana is giving Berrios advice contradictory to Allen's teachings, that's a problem... But if he's supplementing Allen's work, that's a good thing. No single person has all the answers. Relying entirely on the coach to fix everything that ails every player is an unreasonable standard to hold, particularly when there are people very good at the same job also in the room.
  6. Are there any "haters", though? Certainly not on this board. I only remember Levi and I leaning toward his guilt and to my recollection, both of us thought a retrial was warranted (and far away from Manitowoc county).
  7. Glad to see that happen. No matter whether Avery was guilty or not, that Dassey interrogation should have been thrown out on its ass.
  8. An interesting footnote about Disney is that their two most successful purchases of the past decade - Marvel and Lucasfilm - became media goliaths through self-funded projects. The general rule in Hollywood is "never use your own money". But George Lucas did just that when he decided he wanted to sever all creative ties with the studio system and self-funded The Empire Strikes Back. Many people thought he was crazy but Lucasfilm wouldn't be the monster it is today without that decision. There's no freakin' way a studio would have allowed Lucas to charge forward with that script, as it broke all conventional thought about film sequels. The movie ended up defining the Star Wars franchise. Marvel, through an odd brokering of a deal that excluded Iron Man from a funding package they negotiated, decided that Iron Man was the best character to launch their studio so they funded the movie themselves. Sometimes, I guess bucking convention and doing it your own damned self can reap huge rewards.
  9. To be fair, NBC has the unenviable task of coordinating broadcast times from local time to American time. It's not as if Brazil is directly south of us or anything.
  10. I love the Olympics and all its nationalistic, chest-thumping idiocy. With that said, I've watched less and less of it over the years because NBC continues to shift more programming to cable channels. Yet another instance of a content provider not understanding where the future is going. If NBC launched an app where I could watch all Olympic coverage for $25 - commercials included - I'd jump all over it. I can't imagine I'm the only person who feels that way. Sports continues to lose an entire generation of people who refuse to buy cable.
  11. I think Disney will make back that money within a year or two. It was a brilliant purchase. BAM doesn't only stream MLB games. They have several clients already on board, including HBO Now. It's already a profitable enterprise and will only become moreso in the near future. I liken this to Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm. Within a year or two, people will be asking "How'd they get that company for that little money?" Marvel was more of a risk, as it was an untried concept and Marvel itself was recently removed from a corporate collapse. But Lucasfilm was rock-solid and already printed money. With Disney's help, they were a virtual lock to start printing 10x more money within a few years.
  12. It's not silly to punish them a bit because ESPN is a vital part of their operation but the extent of that punishment is out of line. Disney continues to grow despite ESPN floundering. That doesn't jibe with the 25%-ish drop Disney has seen in the past six months. I can understand the market doing something like that to, say, Amazon. Their P/E is waaaaay out of line and the stock price is based on future growth. If that growth falters, the stock can and should suffer mightily for it. But that's not the case for either Apple or Disney (particularly Apple).
  13. I think so, yeah. I mean, it's not entirely out of the ordinary for the market to punish a stock over the short- to mid-term for silly reasons. Look what it did to Apple for 6-9 months. At one point, the stock was down 35%.
  14. I hadn't put much thought into Shopify but, yeah, you make some good points. Though I'm loathe to invest in more tech... I'm already dangerously tech-heavy (unsurprisingly, as my job is in that industry).
  15. I'm still in on Disney. Once the market pulls its head out of its ass (much like it's doing with Apple right now), they'll realize that Disney /=/ ESPN. Disney continues to forecast upward profits, the market continues to beat them down because of stupid ESPN. It's as if the market has forgotten Pixar, Lucasfilm, Marvel, and the toy juggernaut of Disney don't exist under the same umbrella.
  16. Well, the 6:05pm start was the game manufactured out of thin air, wasn't it? IIRC, they already had the 12:05pm start on the books.
  17. It looks like they'll get the day game in but tonight's game is pretty sketchy. They should have bumped the night game to 5:05pm because the later it gets, the less likely they are to complete the game without a delay.
  18. Yeah, unfortunately that's what Milone has descended to in value. Cash and salary relief.
  19. It's the correct decision. The Twins need a guy who can throw multiple innings for literally one day. This is how most teams use the Andrew Albers and Pat Deans of the world. If you're going to call up a prospect, call up a prospect and let him play. If you need a guy to occupy space for 24 hours, go to the back of your 40 man and use one of those guys.
  20. Man, this sucks. The team lights up Keuchel for five runs in two innings and the slate is wiped clean because of rain. I'm not saying it's wrong or a bad ruling but it sucks hard.
  21. Can we all finally agree that Trump is never going to change his approach, which almost ensures a loss in November? The man continues to double-down on outrageous statements as America begrudgingly moves toward Clinton. The crazy he pulled in the primaries doesn't play in a general. He's wilting under the bright lights of a two-horse race, just as I suspected he might. And we haven't even gotten to the debates yet.
  22. Sorry to hear you're having issues but having used a wide variety of tablets, the iPad is the best of the bunch. Android is a *great* phone OS but on tablets, it's pretty much crap. Google made a half-hearted attempt at tablets and improved marginally from 2011-2014 but once tablet sales plateaued (and later declined), both app devs and Google kinda gave up (though I've heard generally positive things about the Pixel C). I have yet to use an Android tablet that compares to my (now gone) iPad 3, much less my iPad Air 2 or iPad Pro (yes, I own two iPads... Don't ask why but there's a reason for it).
  23. Okay, I'm a little embarrassed how badly I misread Jeremy's sentence about the incident. Wait, no, this is the internet. It's obviously Jeremy's fault.
  24. I can't speak for Jeremy but what I got from the article is the implication that Eddie changed something about his approach after getting hit in the face and the change stuck. He doesn't have to be afraid of the ball to have lingering effects from something that happened in 2012. It could have altered how he stood at the plate or swung the bat and if he never changed back, it could have a correlation to the beaning event.
