  1. Nor should they. Kintzler is doing a fine job of closing games, the Twins simply need to do a better job of getting to Kintzler. This is a textbook example of why I believe a team's "closer" should be their third-best relief pitcher. Getting through innings 6-8 is what kills the Twins, not the ninth inning. I don't even believe Kintzler is the team's best reliever and it's still a problem.
  2. If you're not going to miss bats, Kintzler profiles as an acceptable closer: he has decent stuff, he keeps the ball on the ground, he doesn't issue free passes, and he doesn't give up home runs. If a guy is entering a clean inning with >1 run lead over half the time, a pitcher with that profile is going to have success in racking up saves. He's even safe most of the time with a one run lead, as it's going to require the opposing team to string together at least two hits to score a single run.
  3. As spycake has reiterated in this thread a few times, there are several ways this could play out and it could end up being a very good move in as many ways as it ends up being a bad move. What we know right now is that Melotakis doesn't appear to have the velocity to warrant staying on the MLB team. Without more information why he doesn't have that velocity (or whe/if it will return), it's hard to get a read on why this happened. If he clears waivers (and Falvey/Levine were confident that was going to happen), this is a pretty good move, even if Melotakis never amounts to anything. If he's claimed on waivers, then we're going to need to wait this out and see what happens. I'd like to see several guys removed from this bullpen, just like everybody else. But I also like how this front office isn't afraid to move pieces around on a weekly basis. And if they're playing a bit of sleight of hand to get Melotakis through waivers, that's okay with me. If Melotakis is injured and unlikely to recover and he's booted from the org, that's also okay with me.
  4. Maybe you missed the part where I said I don't want Gibson in the rotation but as a sixth man insurance policy. All those young players are great but a team needs about eight starters to open a season. The Twins have about half that number.
  5. Jeez, I can't even keep track of the guy anymore. So he was in the Padres org at the end of last season, right? And they let him go?
  6. I hope he gets another chance, too, but it was pretty obvious what the league thought of Arcia last season. People took a few flyers on him, sure, but he couldn't garner more than a minor league deal when all was said and done. It's kinda humorous that he ended up with an NL team that plays in a cavern, though. Good for Oswaldo that he's performing well but it's hard to see him playing in San Diego long term.
  7. In my opinion, yes. Falvey has a good track record with pitching and we have no basis to judge long-term decisions and trends... yet. Can we disagree with the Melotakis move? Sure. I disagree with it. But some people are acting as if this front office doesn't know what it's doing and we simply can't make that call at this point.
  8. Yeah, I know he's mashing... in the PCL. And how many times did he clear waivers to end up there?
  9. I don't disagree - which is why I don't understand the move - but these guys have way more data on Melotakis than any of us. Hence, it's a results-based decision. Gnash your teeth all you want but if you're wrong and Melo fails to be an MLB contributor at any point in the future, at least be intellectually honest enough to admit that you didn't know what the hell you were talking about. Because, fer chrissakes, we've been here so. many. times. in the past. I see many of the same people who wailed over the Arcia decision (I was quite down on that move myself) pulling the identical performance in this thread.
  10. We all realize the last seven games with Cleveland have been objectively hilarious, right?
  11. Hah, fair enough. But despite Loria's general douchebaggery, I suspect his reasoning had more to do with proximity and expansion of his brand than the dollars and cents of "cheating" season ticket holders out of three games.
  12. Found it. The Marlins in 2010. Not sure of the home/road split yet though. edit: yep, the Marlins were the home team in all three games.
  13. I'm on a phone so if someone else wants to do the legwork, that'd be great. What's the history of PR games? I'm going from really hazy memory but I recall that one team played a three game "home series" in PR (that, obviously, was not the Expos/Nats).
  14. I like LaTroy. He's rough around the edges but the fact he played in the modern era means he actually has insight into today's game, not the game played in the 70s and 80s. That in itself means he's an easier listen than Bert. There's no excuse for Bert continuing to run out old announcing tropes when the game is so obviously different today.
  15. Oh, the riled up bit wasn't directed at you. You don't get riled up about much of anything as far as I can tell. You're always level-headed. I don't really understand why they didn't split the games into home/road but the MLB schedule is a monstrosity unto itself. I won't even speculate what MLB demands/gives and whether a home/road split was even on the table.
  16. I don't understand the Melo DFA but this will be a results-based evaluation. What I see here - and it's something I see damned near every year - is people lamenting the DFA of mediocrity, only to see that player move to another team and do absolutely nothing. Joe Benson and Oswaldo Arcia are probably the most obvious examples of the past few seasons. The teeth-gnashing over those two players was absolutely epic yet all those people who wailed over the "loss" of those players never seemed to remember how much they complained after it was discovered that both Arcia and Benson were pretty bad at baseball. Do I care about Melotakis? Not one damned bit. Do I understand why they made this move instead of a more obvious move? Not one damned bit. But that doesn't mean the front office is wrong or the same as the old front office. If Melotakis doesn't have what it takes to become a serviceable MLB pitcher (spin rate, velocity, mound presence, whatever), then I will continue to not give a damn about this move. But if Melotakis goes out and finds traction with another team, then we know this DFA was a mistake. But not today.
  17. I think their motivation is pretty clear: increasing the profile of the Twins brand outside Minnesota. Puerto Rico makes a lot of sense. The Twins have several young, promising PR-born players. And besides, somebody has to play in Puerto Rico if MLB is going to schedule games there. I just don't see much to get riled up about here. It's 2.5% of home games. NFL teams forfeit a lot more every time one of them plays in London.
  18. Gibson will probably make about $4-5m in arb. I'm not sure what you expect to get for that money on the free agent market but it's not likely to be much/any better than Kyle Gibson unless the guy has major injury concerns.
  19. With this pitching staff, I tender every arm I have available. Yeah, you don't want Gibson in the rotation but as a sixth man/mop-up guy, he's not a terrible insurance policy when things inevitably go south at some point in a 162 game schedule.
  20. It's almost as if people believe Buxton is 27 years old or something. Yeah, he's a disappointment thus far but come on, the kid is still just 23 years old.
  21. Even a healthy Gray isn't worth Sano. We're talking two years of control against four years of control. And Sano is more of a guaranteed performer going forward.
  22. It could go either direction if we're just looking at a stat line. Granite doesn't even have 200 PAs in Rochester yet. We're still in the territory where 3-4 doubles makes quite a difference in isolated power. Granite has looked really good of late but I'm going to need more sustained performance before I'm convinced he has turned a corner, at least to the degree he has performed in the past 4-6 weeks.
  23. Boy, I just don't see it. Gordon isn't on the 40 man, is still 21 years old, and this is his breakout season. I'd want to see some Rochester time before jumping to Minnesota. And then there's the need issue as well. Polanco is scuffling but he's not an embarrassment. He has no options so he'd be riding the pine. I'd much rather see the Twins jump the ladder with Romero or Gonsalves than Gordon. I see a fair amount of downside in a Gordon promotion and not much upside.
  24. It shows improvement. Buxton's K% by month: April: 37.2% May: 31.3% June: 25.0%
  25. Byron Buxton now has a career low K% at 31.5%.
