  1. Sitting in the Delta Club with a perfect sight line for that Sano grab and holy ****. That was phenomenal.
  2. The main guy I'm keeping an eye on is Hildenberger. If he's a legit arm and you add another, your late inning relief is in pretty good shape. You can shuffle pieces around and field a solid bullpen around a core like that (provided the other guys don't collapse either).
  3. I might be okay with Glynn but would prefer an outside candidate.
  4. ...but that's not what I said. If Hildenberger, Pressly, Rogers, and Duffey close out the season strong (not to mention someone like Curtiss), how many arms do you need? And those are only the guys who can/should pitch this season. I'm not even including the guys in the minors.
  5. They need one legit bullpen arm. Not a recovery project, a legit reliable arm. Whether they need two arms depends how the existing bullpen performs from now until the end of the season.
  6. GatG is sponsored by seat geek. If you use the keyword gleeman you get a discount on first purchase.
  7. That's fair but in response, why call up Garver when Vargas is available? If you're looking for immediate performance off the bench, I have way more faith in Vargas going on an .850 OPS tear for a month than I do Garver. He's actually done it before.
  8. And that's fair. Belisle, overall, has been good. Not great, just good... and his peripherals aren't the kind that give you faith in his continuing down that path. But his promotion seems to have opened the door for Hildenberger and Pressly, which might actually improve the bullpen in a more consistent, projectable way. Of course, all of that could have happened without the loss of Kintzler but to that I'll simply reply "Molitor".
  9. To me, it's just not clear cut enough to really get upset about it. Several weeks ago when the Twins were fading hard, I wanted to see the team just call up the youngsters (mainly Garver and Gonsalves) and just let it fly. Instead, they picked up Enns and are giving him a shot. That's not enough of a difference to get me upset. And in the meantime, the Twins managed to climb back into this thing, which changes the situation a bit. Any potential failure by Garver (coupled with the probable loss of Gimenez) makes the move considerably riskier for two weeks, which I find unnecessary. But either way, it's nothing I'd get too upset about. If the front office had confidence to roll the dice on Garver, so be it. If they don't have that confidence and don't roll the dice, so be it. (finally had enough time away from baby to type a real response on a computer instead of phone)
  10. Pretty much all of this. I don't know what Molitor does in the clubhouse but it has led to surprising results two out of three times. But his on-field stuff is aggravating in very specific, obvious, and correctable ways.
  11. What straw man? That Gimenez's .652 OPS for a backup catcher isn't that bad? Maybe Garver will be better. It's entirely possible. It's also very possible he's worse. And if he's disastrously worse, you've probably lost Gimenez in the process, making September problematic for the team. I was in favor of this move 3-4 weeks ago when the Twins were fading and a good Garver might help them win a game over the six weeks leading into September (and get him important MLB experience in the process). But now, it just doesn't make much sense because the rotation has been terrible over the past week and the Twins need those arms because literally any of the Twins starters could have back-to-back 3.0 IP games.
  12. Their last turn through the rotation, Twins starters pitched 22.1 innings... and that's including Colin's 7 IP gem. Unfortunately, the Twins still need every pitcher they can roster. And Gimenez has a .652 OPS on the season. If you think that's pulling a Murphy, you should go look at JR Murphy's Twins stats again.
  13. Agreed. I wanted to see Garver get his shot in mid to late July. Now it doesn't make much sense. Keep Gimenez for roster security because if you call up Garver and he pulls a Murphy or gets injured, you're kinda screwed for the rest of the season.
  14. I can't give Molitor much of the blame for that stuff. He was certainly a willing participant in the Sano fiasco but he doesn't build the 25 man roster. He was given a bunch of bad defensive players and while he didn't exactly make the most of it, his options were limited.
  15. I was ready to move on from Molitor last season. This season, it's not so clear. Two out of three seasons, the team has overperformed. I'd still probably move on from him but it's not the easy decision it once was.
  16. Is it possible that Garver could help the Twins win a game this month? Sure. Is it likely that Garver would help the Twins win a game this month? No. It's also possible Garver would help the Twins lose a game this month. Some people are assuming Garver's shiny Rochester OPS will translate to Minnesota. See Hicks and Buxton for the reason why that assumption is flawed.
  17. While I think Garver should be promoted, some people here are making some crazy-large assumptions that he'd have a positive impact with the stick in 2017. You'd think we'd have learned by now that MiLB stats often don't translate to MLB with any kind of reliability. I want Garver up because it could help him be better in 2018, not because I'm convinced he will be better than Gimenez or that it'd even matter if he was.
  18. This is far from scientific but I just went and checked DRS for the 2014 Royals outfield. Cain: +23 Gordon: +26 Dyson: +13 Aoki: -7 So Aoki is the odd guy out here, obviously (and was definitely not a bad defender by eyeball tests of the time). Here are his DRS numbers by year: 2012 Brewers: +2 2013 Brewers: +10 2014 Royals: -7 2015 Giants: -1 2016 Mariners: -4 2017 Split: +2 Again, doesn't really tell anything and that steep drop off is interesting but it's not as if he played next to some slouch in 2013. Gomez was wandering CF for the Brewers but Braun was in LF (and even he posted a +3 DRS that season). Was Gomez shading left and giving Aoki room to field? Dunno. Not exactly conclusive but somewhat interesting, anyway.
  19. I'm still seeing the term "fourth outfielder" thrown around often enough. I'm not sure this is who Rosario is going forward but right now he looks pretty damned good and he's the starting LF until he proves otherwise.
  20. It's possible. It's also possible the metrics are incomplete and/or wrong. I legitimately do not know which side to favor.
  21. I'm a little baffled by the board's general attitude toward Rosario. The guy is poised to take the team lead in OPS, for crying out loud. What do we expect the guy to do? He was a good prospect in the minors. He has weaknesses but so does every "good" prospect, which is why they're not called "great" or "elite" prospects. Ride out the season with Eddie in left. If you get a great offer for him in the offseason that improves the 2018 squad, you strongly consider pulling the trigger. If not, you pencil him into LF for 2018 and go fix some of the actual problems on this team, of which there are several.
  22. Rosario is currently sitting with a 1.6 fWAR. Is that going to win any awards? No, but it's more in line with what I've seen from the guy using the eye test. He makes too many mistakes but has countered that with a hot bat. But the defensive metrics are giving me pause across the board. According to DRS, Rosario is -10 runs on the season. That's a pace of roughly -14 runs over a full season. Rosario was +11 runs in 2015 and +2 runs in 2016. Maybe he's that bad this season and I'm just not seeing it. Or maybe we're seeing a Buxton effect here. The more Buxton plays, the worse Rosario looks by the numbers. In short, I'm not going to discount the defensive metrics on Rosario but I'm not buying into them wholesale, either. This could easily be a Grossman situation all over again; the metrics absolutely skewering a guy in a single season for no apparent reason. On the topic of Grossman, he's been more valuable defensively than Rosario this season according to DRS. That... doesn't really jibe with me.
  23. Okay, listen. There are some interesting things being said here and we all applaud Lewis for the promotion and good game but WE NEED A CLARIFICATION ON WHAT "HIGH MINORS" REALLY MEANS
  24. We should criticize lots of people. The Twins were 4-5 with RISP and then went 1-13 afterwards. This should have been an ass-kicking of epic proportions. Everyone failed after the sixth inning (and a few failed before that point *cough*Berrios*cough*).
