  1. I'm pretty sure the Twins found that guy and gave him a roster to make it play.
  2. This has literally nothing to do with what I said. You're diminishing the impact of analytics in an era where the best teams use it extensively. I'm saying that the two don't need to be exclusive; it's possible to field the best team possible while also factoring in character. In fact, the Twins front office has talked about player character frequently. They factor that into their decisions all the time. Thad Levine has mentioned it more times than I can count.
  3. This could literally be a lineup with nine position players that hit 20+ homeruns. It's rather absurd. There are no real stars but the lineup is littered with good to very good players, and that makes it very dangerous.
  4. Good point. I kinda left Cruz out of my thinking, which is pretty ridiculous given hindsight.
  5. I don't like to correct core writers often but I found this line so untrue that it needed revision.
  6. You're joking, right? The last three World Series have involved Cleveland, the Dodgers (twice), the Red Sox, and the Astros. Those four teams are literally the models of modern analytics in baseball. Where you see "heart", I see "lots of spreadsheets". Sure, the players are the ones who go out and win those ballgames but those players didn't emerge from the ether; they were drafted, traded, and developed for very specific reasons. And those reasons were borne from people who spent a lot of time in front of computers.
  7. I think most of us can agree that this offense is not going to continue its torrid pace, though it should remain very good given its depth. But there has been one weak spot thus far... Gonzalez. I think he'll turn the corner and be the league-average guy he usually is and that's a good thing to have in a tenth player... but Marwin isn't a tenth player right now. What happens when Sano returns? Is he going to be the .750 OPS guy we've been frustrated with or will he be the .850 OPS guy we all know he can be? Overall, I think we'll see some tapering off on offense from individual players, particularly home runs. But how much will overall output change if you add a .100 isoD, .500 SLG guy to the middle of the lineup? It pushes Rosario out of cleanup, which is not a great fit for him anyway. Anyway, this next month will be interesting. If Sano comes back as a .750 guy, he's basically Gonzalez with bad defense. If he comes back as the Sano we all know can exist, this offense gets... nasty. There will literally be nine position players with the potential for 20+ home runs. That's straight up obnoxious.
  8. But do you really?
  9. I’m slightly aroused right now. Er... I mean, “thank you”.
  10. Its weird how little the Stark death impacted me but I’m wayyyyyyyy more of a Cap guy. Still, “I am Iron Man” *snap* was such a payoff on the RDJ Stark.
  11. I picked up an offset smoker a couple of years ago. Mostly I do brisket using apple or cherry. I find mesquite and hickory too much in an offset with a brisket. It’s a chore but quite fun if you literally have nothing to do on a weekend day and don’t mind waking at 5am to serve a meal at 7pm.
  12. While I’m not quick to cast judgment on a team, this is starting to resemble a very good baseball team. Not just good, perhaps very good. Now add an arm to the pen, please.
  13. Most of us thought Cruz was a savvy acquisition but I think there’s a new mentality throughout the team and it’s for the better. I suspect Cruz is a large part of the reason for that but Cron, Schoop, and Gonzalez likely play a part as well.
  14. I’m not sure why the Twins should be interested in a starter right now. Pineda has looked pretty bad but I’d give him another month before making a decision. No way am I booting Berrios, Odorizzi, Gibson, or Perez out of the rotation today. But if there’s a bullpen option available, do it yesterday.
  15. Yep, as I called in the third or so inning: "I can just tell this is going to be one of those unlucky games the Twins simply won’t win, despite the offense looking adequate." Basically everything went against the team (largely deserved defensively) and they lost by three runs. It happens. That's baseball.
  16. I miss the game threads that didn't spend most of their time on either irrelevance or despair. God forbid, it's actually possible to have game threads without persistent bitching or not talking about the game at all. It seems there could be a middle ground between those two widely disparate points.
  17. In a nation where we have FAR AND AWAY the highest incarceration rate, why shouldn't the incarcerated get a vote? Honest question and I expect a legitimate answer. I'm torn on the issue but it seems to me that if we have such a high percentage of people in the prison system - far higher than anyone else - that maybe their votes might actually be important. Sure, they f-ed up, there's no denying that, but obviously something we're all doing is leading them to be incarcerated in ridiculous numbers. Maybe we should listen to them for a minute and voting is a good way to let them send their message. Where I'm actually torn is that repeat rapists, murderers, and those lot don't deserve a vote... but that's not our prison system. Our system is chock full of petty drug offenders, repeat petty offenders, and loads of people who are the backbone of an incarceration system that leads the world in sheer numbers.
  18. Bolded: They're obviously not, as Trump couldn't do jack to repeal it under a completely GOP-controlled federal government. This law is here to stay, despite GOP dumb****ery. As for the rest, I'm 42 and still under an ACA program, despite my wife having a good job. To add me, she needs to drop an extra $700/mo to add an entire family (our kids are still fosters, so under government plans). It's not just 20-somethings. The ACA protects loads of us, even though I'm pretty unhappy that my bill has gone from $100/mo to $200/mo to $300/mo over the course of five-ish years without me tapping into a single dime of usage. The system is broken and needs to be fixed but the ACA is a hell of a lot better than what came before it.
  19. Yep, it's a band-aid for a flawed roster. But it also doesn't have to be binary. There's no need to use an opener consistently or refuse the idea entirely. If you have four reliable starters, using one opener is a decent option. Personally, I don't really care for the opener idea because it alters the game flow quite a bit but if it brings wins, go ahead and do it.
  20. Has there been any movement on this? My understanding is that Congress’ right to demand his tax returns is pretty airtight. Thanks, Teapot Dome.
  21. Frankly, it’s kind of amazing Gibson made it five innings tonight.
  22. Yep. Half this roster is new and couldn’t care less about the Yankees. It’s just a bad game.
  23. It’s an ugly stretch of ballgames with little rest. You have to send him back out and hope he figures it out.
  24. Nah, not even an anti-jinx. This just looks like one of THOSE games. Not even a blowout, just ugly baseball from both sides that doesn’t want to go your way.
