  1. That’s the thing about mediocre or kinda bad relievers; they can trick you into belief of competency for a month or even two at a time because of the frequency in which they’re used. The Twins actually have the promise of a solid bullpen now. It could even be good if one of Alcala or Graterol pans out in a few weeks.
  2. That’s one hell of a write-up, Nick. I don’t think you missed a single thing of note this week.
  3. It was bound to equal out in time but it’d still be nice to see a team that launches moonshots at a historic pace manage to occasionally do it with the bases juiced.
  4. It stings to look back at that second Brewers game and realize the Twins were *this close* to a 6-0 road trip.
  5. The Twins are 28-11 in “blowout games” (games decided by 5+ runs). That’s brutal.
  6. A four game sweep against a mediocre team on the road in a sweltering hellhole of a city. I’ll take it.
  7. Cleveland is 2.5 games back. Now is not the time to take your two best arms out of the equation for ten days, particularly when roster size *won’t matter* in 12 days. If the team is up six on Cleveland on September 20th, sure, start handing out lengthy rest stints to your best players a few days at a time.
  8. So this looks like it’s going to be a real nail-biter.
  9. He’d be useful to have on a postseason roster. The problem is what to do with him in the six weeks before the postseason.
  10. Tonight, Verlander just pitched his sixth consecutive start with 10 or more strikeouts. But hey, as I've heard around here, Houston didn't do anything to make him a better pitcher.
  11. While I've been very critical of Baldelli's bullpen management lately, the way he worked the pen tonight was perfect. Using Rogers in the eighth was exactly what metrics dictated. No closer. Play the matchup. And that's what he did.
  12. It depends who is at the plate. If you have two righties, I'm leaning Romo. If there are three righties, go Romo every time. Dyson is a better overall pitcher. If the L/R mix is more in play, go Dyson.
  13. Aim for a 3-1 series against a decent team and then beat the hell out of cupcakes for awhile. A 1-1 split over the next two games and I'm very happy.
  14. He does but it's not great. Choo had one hell of a plate appearance there and make Romo really work.
  15. Damn, that was a hell of a plate appearance from both ends of the spectrum. Now get Santana and end this effing game.
  16. Fair enough. I can't disagree with that.
  17. I-Rod's hitting wasn't great. It was good. And if you adjust for park and era, it's even less impressive. Mauer was a hell of a lot better with the bat.
  18. Well, the shift didn't really work out there. Which is weird, given that you don't expect a hitter to go oppo on a 48mph fastball.
  19. Actually, I think Smalley is pretty honest most of the time about how today's players are better and the game is just superior. He's not Jack Morris, that's for sure. I kinda like Roy, especially considering how badly most players of his era adjust to announcing the modern game.
  20. That's not solid, that's outstanding. Like "best catcher in the league" territory, basically a light version of Buster Posey or Joe Mauer in their primes. But honestly, my expectation of Garver is actually a touch higher than that right now, and I tend to skew conservatively on projections. I think he's pretty easily an .850 OPS guy, which puts him right in Posey/Mauer territory, though I think his defense is inferior to Mauer (if adjusted for era). Mauer was a very good catcher, one that would have been even better had he been given the modern tools of framing data. But still, I have really big expectations of Garver for the next couple of years.
  21. I don't think there's much room for anything but offensive regression in Garver. But that doesn't mean he can't be an extremely good player going forward. He simply won't be historically good, like Mike Piazza's bat with Joe Mauer's glove. That's basically the best catcher in baseball history, which is asking way too much of Mitch.
