  1. Even if the Sox get a deal done, Bloom looks really bad.
  2. I hope Falvey dropped a few expletives on Bloom before he slammed down the phone. What a circus.
  3. You mean that time the commissioner stepped in to prevent trades because someone was so obviously over-stepping their bounds by gaming the free agency system and liquidating players, many of whom had no contract? Not exactly the same thing here, is it?
  4. I get some of what you’re saying but Manfred has no business mucking about in trades amongst teams. Literally not his job.
  5. This sounds a lot like random Twitter speculation to me.
  6. He doesn't need to give up anything close to a top three prospect in the Dodger farm system to make this deal happen, though I get your point at large.
  7. Absolutely. In a vaccum, Maeda vs. a $16m/yr Price aren't *that* different. It's close to a wash, with Maeda being marginally more valuable because of the lower risk, something that doesn't matter all that much to the Dodgers in the first place. So that means the Dodgers are essentially getting Betts for a not-great prospect. If someone has to pay more, it *has* to be LA.
  8. If there was news that it was on the verge of becoming a two-team trade, I think he'd mention it, as that means more is coming from the Dodgers, probably... maybe Maeda, maybe someone else. That alone is mention-worthy from either side.
  9. I guess it's not a big deal if the front office is able to dish off a prospect they don't particularly like but as someone who wasn't ecstatic about the deal in the first place, moving Graterol+ instead of Graterol takes some of the shine off the move.
  10. It would amuse me to no end if the Twins contacted Boston directly and pursued Price...something like Graterol and Javier with the Sox taking on a significant portion of Price's salary (let's say more than 25%, less than 50%). Then the Dodgers have to try to deal for Betts straight-up... good luck with that, you cheap bastards.
  11. It will be harder to complete without the Twins involved, as LA doesn't part with their prospects easily and there's an issue with what to do with Maeda if Price is in the deal, which he *will be* because that's the salary Boston is dying to off-load. The Dodgers will likely have to go offload Maeda if they acquire Price or else the guy might go into open revolt (and I wouldn't blame him for it). Boston and LA can certainly go find another trade partner to round out the deal but given how Boston needs to complete this deal ASAP, I doubt they're eager to start negotiations from ground zero with a new partner at this point. What I suspect happens is that LA will throw in a low minors flyer or take on more of Price's salary. What's an extra $8-10m to them anyway? Honestly, given the current deal's structure, LA is making out like a bandit so they should be the ones taking on the additional burden to complete the deal.
  12. I don't see that as a real problem. The Twins can pull back Graterol and put him in the bullpen this season. At that point, his value will be based on performance and no one will really care about what happened in February. On the other hand, Boston obviously has a directive from on-high to get payroll under the competitive balance number and they CAN'T do that without shipping both Betts and Price to someone. The number of "someones" who can take on that kind of money includes: the Dodgers. I don't see anyone else with anything approaching that kind of payroll flexibility. And LA just energized their fanbase by acquiring who is probably the second-best player in baseball. If they miss out on Betts, it will look really bad for them. Boston and LA are far more invested in seeing this trade through to completion than the Twins, who can likely pivot to Pittsburgh or someone else to acquire an arm... or they just decide to stand pat.
  13. Yep, I think the Twins hold most of the cards here. If they back out, the Dodgers and Sox - who are *much* more invested in this trade - lose out on making badly-needed moves. Comparatively speaking, the Twins are the minor player in this deal and can back out without losing much, if anything. I suspect the Dodgers and Sox are working hard to find a way to make this trade work while the Twins are sitting back, saying "you two figure it out and let us know when you do".
  14. Obviously, everyone wants Wheeler more than Maeda but it’s pretty hard to complain about Donaldson + Maeda instead of Wheeler + Graterol.
  15. He’s cheaper but in cost per win, Donaldson + Maeda is likely the better value, especially given the plans to keep Graterol in the bullpen. Outside of Ryu’s standout 2019, Maeda and Ryu aren’t really that different (Ryu being slightly better but the gap isn’t large), except Ryu is older and goes down with an injury almost every season.
  16. The more I sit on this deal, the more I like it. Sure, I would have preferred more upside but that probably would have come with less control, as well. And that contract is outrageous. If Maeda fails, the Twins are out one Tyler Clippard contract per year for the next four years. And the more the Twins pay Maeda, the more they've gotten from him on the field, which makes it really easy to write those checks should they balloon to $10m a season. Really a good deal overall, barring Graterol being a true top-flight ace, which is really unlikely to happen. Even if Graterol becomes a shut down reliever for six seasons, there's an equally good chance Maeda becomes a shut down reliever (or better) for four years, making even that situation close to a wash.
  17. I'm not bashing Maeda but when I say "filler", I basically mean "somewhere between the Odorizzi-Pineda range". That's a pretty good player but it's not what the Twins really need right now. Though depth of arms never hurts through a season, that's for sure.
  18. This is an upgrade but it's not going big.
  19. Oh, I'd definitely rather have Maeda over Price, too, my problem is that this seems to be more of a cost-conscious decision than it should be given expected revenue in the coming years. Maeda is fantastic filler but not what the Twins really need, and that's an upside arm that will fill out the Donaldson/Sano/Polanco/Kepler/Buxton/etc years. Go big. They shouldn't need to lose both of their top prospects to find a good pitcher, but they can afford to lose one and then a few other good ones, too. Because the Yankees and Astros aren't ****ing around, nor will they stop ****ing around for the next three years. Go hard at them or don't bother. The window is now, either compete with the best or don't.
  20. Cost and certainty, yes. But Graterol is a flamethrower with a solid third pitch. It's a tough sell to flip him for a cost-controlled third starter, which is what this appears to be.
  21. By the way, your idea has been met with not only resounding success but legitimate excitement. This WILL happen before the start of the season. Literally everyone is on board with the idea.
  22. This is... strange. I can't process this move in the moment because it's the type of move that needs a bit of reflection and analysis, as it came completely out of nowhere. PAGING MATT TRUEBLOOD AND PARKER HAGEMAN, YOUR TABLE IS READY
  23. The Yankees were ranked ninth so the list isn't biased, it's just bad.
  24. I like to shoot down everything I read on these forums but I'm having a hard time disagreeing with this one...
