  1. If they find a way to flip every penny of that $10m into an extra year or two of Berrios, the trade becomes great. But I don't think that will happen, unfortunately. And not necessarily because the Twins are being cheap, I just don't believe Berrios is interested in an extension.
  2. Yeah, the $10m is meh. As a fan, I don't really give a damn whether the Pohlads make $40m or $48m from the team, I just want the Twins to get better, and they did.
  3. Especially given the Twins bullpen. Graterol is a great arm but the Twins already have a BUNCH of really good arms in the bullpen. What the Twins *don’t* have is a bunch of really good arms in the rotation and while Maeda isn’t the sexiest target in baseball, adding a fourth guy that slots in with similar numbers to Odorizzi, Pineda, and maybe even Berrios is a pretty big deal over 162 games. The Twins now have a solidly above average rotation and that shouldn’t be dismissed simply because they didn’t go out and get a flashy name.
  4. This is absolutely a win-now move. This rotation has depth but it's not very good depth, especially early in the season until Pineda comes back. The Twins have to win to make the postseason and this move will help them win baseball games. If that's not a win-now move, I think your bar is set a little too high. BTW, I'm not in love with this move, either, but the Twins are a better team today than they were yesterday. And that's what I want to see continue to happen through this year's trade deadline.
  5. Noooooooooooo. I want some of the players from those relatively outdated teams, not the manager that was an important factor in them being so outdated. We need current analysis, not more folksy baseball wisdom. Stories are fine; literally every person who played or managed has stories. What we don't need to do is try to revert a broadcast into hearing people talk about how baseball worked 20 years ago.
  6. Given when this deal transpired, it's unlikely the Twins are going to find a way to spend that $10m before the deadline, if they do at all. The money just makes me shrug. If that's what it took to get the deal done, so be it. I'm more interested in Maeda than Raley and a comp round pick because Maeda makes the Twins better in 2020, not a theoretical 2024.
  7. Honestly, you're undervaluing the bolded and wildly overvaluing the rest. The Twins are trying to win today. Not tomorrow, not in 2023, but today. They have a deep farm system that can certainly weather the loss of what is likely a reliever, even a very good reliever. There comes a time where you stop worrying about what happens four years from now and start thinking about how to field a legitimately competitive team today. The Twins did that and while I don't *love* the deal, I can't find a real reason to complain about it, either. As of right now, the 2020 Twins are a better team than they were five hours ago and they didn't really impact the farm system in a meaningful way to do so. We can't have the cake and eat it, too. A team that wants to improve needs to give up assets to do so. The Twins did both.
  8. All I ask is that if you’re this convinced you’re right and want to say I told you so, be sure to check back in with cap in hand if you’re wrong.
  9. Injuries happen so probably not but that kind of depth is good to have in the rotation. The Twins probably won't get as lucky as they did with the 2019 rotation (until the Pineda suspension, anyway).
  10. Losing a comp pick isn't a huge deal. It stings a little but that's the price to pay for acquiring pieces to improve the MLB team. It's not as if they lost another legit prospect on top of Graterol, which is *always* worth more than a draft pick.
  11. Kind of my thoughts as well. At the end of the day, the Twins are now a better team and that’s what really matters to me. How they get there is meh unless they do something stupid, which is certainly not the case here.
  12. The Dodgers would have to liquidate a half dozen players to get under the competitive balance threshold number. Maeda doesn’t move the needle in that regard, as the Dodgers are still angling to add over $40m in payroll with Betts and Price.
  13. The Balazovic thing was a rumor but I think it was a likely ask from the Sox perspective. And the fact the front office didn't move from Graterol suggests they view the rest of their pitching prospects more highly, which is probably a good thing.
  14. It's not a cycle. Falvey and Levine were hired after the 2016 season. Rebuilding an entire farm system to modern standards and drafting the kind of players this front office wants to put on the field takes time. I don't expect to see this kind of mad-scramble to fill out a rotation with veterans happening any time soon with the slew of prospects the Twins have churning through the pipeline. The guys they wanted and drafted are only now entering the high minors so from this point forward, any success or failure will be on this front office.
  15. Hey, there's close to even money Brusdar will now play in the 2020 World Series so I think he'll be just fine.
  16. Pretty hard to complain about that deal and it just makes Bloom look even worse because if the Dodgers were willing to take on Graterol, his arm isn't likely to fall off tomorrow (any more than any other pitching prospect, anyway).

  18. Any word on what draft pick?
  19. There always are in a farm system this deep in middling talent. I'm sure there are guys in that range that Falvine don't particularly care for and wouldn't lose any sleep over if they were traded.
  20. All true. Maeda is as much about 2021 and beyond as he is about this season. The Twins can now let Odorizzi walk after 2020, which gives the Twins payroll flexibility without needing to scramble to patch three rotation spots in one offseason again.
  21. I don't like it, either, but it's fair movement when the other team starts waffling. What the Red Sox are asking for is outrageous, on the other hand.
  22. If the Twins really want Maeda, their offer of Graterol plus someone in the 15-20 range is fair. Why Boston hasn't just accepted it is beyond me because it's so painfully obvious they will NOT get Graterol plus another top ten prospect. That's just silly. Step off the ledge, Bloom. Just take the deal already. You're not going to look better the longer you string this along.
  23. The fact this hasn’t happened suggests to me Falvey is very high on Balazovic.
  24. From MLBTR: “MLB Network’s Jon Heyman suggests that the Twins have expressed a willingness to one of their top-20 prospects to push the deal across the goal line, but even that hasn’t met the Red Sox’ heightened asking price.” Seriously?!?!?!?! Bloom can go **** himself if that’s true.
