The Twins Trade Deadline Needs: A Power Outage in Two Power Spots

    Nate Palmer

The Twins offense may need to be addressed at the trade deadline if the team wants to make a playoff run. We already examined the outfield needs and now we turn our attention to the infield.

Earlier this week, we dove into where the Minnesota Twins can upgrade their lineup in the outfield. Now, we need to take a look at any existing holes in the infield. This past weekend and into this week have been a great example of how quickly the outlook of a position group can change with as little as one player regaining healthy status.

One thing the infield group has going for them is a healthy Carlos Correa, who is performing more like the MVP-caliber player the Twins believed they were signing when everyone else was balking at his medicals. He is playing his usual stellar defense while hitting .252/.327/.430 and a .758 OPS. Those offensive numbers are below where Correa should be but not so alarmingly low that they create a crater as he is placed in the lineup each and every day.

Royce Lewis returned Tuesday night to take his rightful spot at third base. As he loves to do, he returned with fanfare, collecting two walks and his second home run of the season. If Lewis and Correa are healthy, the Twins left side of the infield should be in good shape the rest of the way.

That said, this is where the team needs to look to improve.

    Second Base
Second base making this list is a surprise when considering how the position was widely viewed coming into the season. Since the beginning of the season, Edouard Julien has struggled mightily and was the move to make room for Royce Lewis to return to the MLB roster.

Last season, Julien hit for a .839 OPS. His OPS has dropped significantly to .676 this season. I don’t need to go into detail here as his struggles have been examined and scrutinized already, but this now becomes a position that needs answers. Julien’s demotion left the Twins turning to Willi Castro to start at second in the first game without Julien. As discussed with the outfield mix, it may be time for Castro to have a starting role. What is tough now is Castro appears to be needed potentially at second, in left field, and as a utility player. Last I checked, there is only one Willi Castro, and he can’t be the answer everywhere.

Now would be an excellent time for Kyle Farmer to shake off his ugly start of .163/.274/.239 and a .513 OPS. He is still best suited as a bench or platoon player, but for the short term, he could really help out the Twins lineup if he could be trusted to play second regularly.

    First Base/DH
Technically, first base and designated hitter should be the easiest holes for any team to fill. They are at the lowest end of the defensive spectrum (or require no defense), and often, the goal is to find a player who can hit and play enough defense at first base to contribute positively.

This offseason, the Twins emphasized the position's defensive side and signed Carlos Santana. Santana has carried a bulk of the load at first base in 2024, but his bat overall has yet to follow. His season numbers sit at .222/.304/.397 with a .701 OPS. Santana has shown improvement. In May, he improved to a .735 OPS, and in a young June, he is sitting at 1.043 OPS.

For the Twins, designated hitter functions best in a rotation as a day of rest from the field for some of the team's better bats or oft-injured players. Because of the lack of production from some players, Ryan Jeffers has been used heavily at DH and still sits at the top of games played at the position with 24. Trevor Larnach (20 games), Alex Kirilloff (12), and Byron Buxton (6) are the following most prominent players to rotate through that spot. If it weren’t for Jeffers, the DH production would be ugly.

The new wrinkle in this mix adds intrigue to how to move forward at this position: Jose Miranda. In a ripple effect move to Lewis being healthy, Miranda needs a new home, and both first base and DH could be just that for him.

    Backup Catcher
Christian Vazquez is a joy to watch defensively. There have been a few times this year when he has thrown out potential base runners, and it has been nothing short of awesome. His bat has proven the Lego Movie song very wrong. He is part of a team, and it has not been awesome.

With Vazquez’s contract, there may be nothing the Twins can realistically do about this spot unless they are willing to carry three catchers. Undoubtedly, the Twins would like to see Vazquez’s .169/.194/.237 and .431 OPS drastically change or be replaced by someone with better batting numbers.

Injury Reinforcements: Lewis was the big name on this list less than a week ago. Now that he is back, the Twins are healthy at these positions.

    Minor League Promotions:
    Brooks Lee
Brooks Lee recently returned from injury and is the prized promotion for the Twins infield mix. He was very desired when Correa and Lewis went down this year and certainly would have been a call-up if he was healthy. The next player to get a crack at the Twin's primary second baseman job may be a race between Lee and Julien. Lee is doing his job thus far in five games at Triple-A, batting .450/.476/.550 with a 1.026 OPS.

    Jair Camargo
Jair Camargo was up with the Twins for a moment this season, and while he didn’t produce much at the plate in his two games of action, don’t let that fool you into thinking he can’t hit. Camargo has a .917 OPS in the minors this year, and last season had a .826 OPS with Triple-A St. Paul. Camargo is rehabbing on his way back from injury but is the Twin's answer to backup catcher whenever they make that move.

    Michael Helman
It feels like Helman’s name continues to come up as a guy who could but just has never quite gotten a call-up. Julien and Lee are certainly ahead of him as long as they are healthy, but Helman’s .261/.357/.466 slash line, .823 OPS, and eight home runs make him intriguing. Coming into the season, I would have expected to be writing Yunior Severino or Chris Williams’ name here, but they have been unable to follow up their powerful 2023 campaigns in the same way in 2024.

Except that Emma Rodriguez is also on the IL again as he reinjured a bad thumb that already had him on the IL a few days earlier. Those can take time to heal or you play at less than your best. I don't think we see him on the Twins this year.

Personally, I'd probably promote Emmanuel Rodriguez today to AAA and have him play CF while DaShawn Keirsey is on the IL. Evaluate Rodriguez's performance at AAA for the next month and a half and decide whether he's potentially ready for the big show.

He just might be talented enough to get the call from AA to the majors. But someone who follows the minors closer than me can call me out on it. I see he’s been raking and I’d love to see him get some run time with the MLB team after the trade deadline.

The issues with the INF are the same as the OF, just not playing up to talent and potential. The difference is, I think the INF is closer to being "fixed".

3B is fine as long as Lewis is around. Period! Both Miranda and Castro can help give him days off. Lee also, in the future. I'm deliberately leaving Farmer out of the equation for obvious reasons, but he can bring a solid glove there if you need him to.

SS is more than fine with Correa playing as well as I've ever seen him. OPS is down across MLB and he's still 60 points higher than average. Castro provides a solid backup option. Again, so will Lee at some point. Same caveat about Farmer there.

1B still has me "meh", though I don't like the term, lol. Santana is NOT a difference maker there in any way. But he's been solid. He started horrible, got hot, slumped, and has been better again as of late. For some CRAZY reason, he has more HR and XBH and RBI batting LH against RHP, even though his actual 4 part splits are MUCH HIGHER against LHP. HUH? Crazy but true. Can he maintain his solid but not great bat the remaining 2/3 of the season? I expect some regression to the norm at least. Miranda needs to be in the lineup for now, and the future. He can do so at 3B here and there, and at 1B along with DH. I don't know that Kirilloff gets any sort or reset if he goes to AAA. What's he going to accomplish there? He needs to figure stuff out NOW at the ML level. He can be part of the 1B/DH plan, along with a few games in the OF. But Larnach is out producing him and looks far better. And Wallner might be close to ready for a promotion again. That means AK back to AAA, though I don't know if that helps him. And that's sad to say.

I have a lot of belief and faith in both Julien and Lee. But Julien has hit a bump in the road that many/most young players hit. His bump was just bigger than I expected. The talent and approach are correct, but he's gotten mixed up in the aggressive/passive approach that he's known for. Lee needs time. Lee can play 3 spots, Julien 2, with 1B still being a spot I think he's going to be a part of in the future. Castro can be just fine at 2B, but he's not only needed everywhere, but maybe at his best when he IS playing everywhere. Eventually, Farmer is going to be gone. That leaves room for both Lee AND Julien at some point, but for now, 2B is holding down the INF, and limiting Castro's greatest strength.

1B/DH/2B are all strangely tied, with some OF mixed in, simply because we're waiting...impatiently...for 2 or 3 young and youngish bats to get their act together.

At this point, Vazquez is experience and great defense with HOPE that he's going to be at least a little bit better. Right now, he's a slightly better version of Drew Butera. I'm betting he sticks for the remainder of the season based not only on contract, but also his defense. The Twins, IMO, might be forced to release him next offseason, or early next year, and just trust Camargo. And Camargo has some ability as a catcher and a hitter. And at some point, the Twins just might have to eat the 3rd year of the Vazquez deal.

The INF is in flux, but I actually feel better about it than the OF at the moment.

I think you give some guys thru the month of June but Kiriloff Farmer Margot ones going to be off the roster.

Vazquez gets through the month as well but a serious discussion on Camargo is needed.  If you’re going to ride out Vazquez this yr and next maybe you look at trading Camargo.  I have heard Chris Williams has been focusing on his defense behind the plate and has really improved. Is him and Winker viable 3rd catchers?

one of Kiriloff Larnach and Wallner aren’t part of the future and a decision in which one is needed.

If the Twins are going to have a similar or lower payroll next yr I would consider moving Kepler at the deadline.

Bring up Michael Helman!  The bats getting hot he can play the Castro role and do everything defensively Castro can. The next injury to any position player should be Helmans job.

By all reports, Williams has worked very hard on his defense and is trusted behind the plate. (A shoulder surgery in college has limited his arm previously and I don't know if that's improved over time or not). But Williams has suddenly stopped hitting. Camargo is the better option at this point, and he's healthy again and rehabbing his way back to St Paul. Again, by all reports, he's solid behind the plate, has a solid arm, has power and some HIT ability. I just don't know that Vazquez is going anywhere based on his defense and contract for THIS year.

You won't find a bigger fan of Helman anywhere besides me. He RAKED at St Paul in 2023 but had 3 different injuries, and he probably missed his window as a result. And the Twins ended up with Luplow. Helman has hit ability, some power, good speed and SB results, and is solid at 7 defensive spots. He had a .902 OPS at AAA last year, and has been sitting in the .820-.830 range for the season. I believe he's over 1.000 OPS the past couple of weeks. He was slowed by a small injury to begin the year, and I'd bet his OPS is over .900 from about week 2 or 3 until now.

But he's not on the 40 man, Martin is. And Margot is a veteran who's surprisingly hit pretty well the past couple of weeks. IMO, Martin is still a bit of an unknown. I would have loved to replace Margot with Helman a few weeks ago to see what they've got. I don't care he just turned 28yo, I wanted to see what he might be able to do given a chance as a late blooming utility guy. The Twins obviously like him. They just don't seem willing to give him a shot at this point for whatever reason.

Understand Camarago is a better option behind the plate.  He is a good defender behind the plate with a big arm and has show pop in his bat.  But if the Twins are going to force him to sit in AAA hanging onto Vazquez you might as well trade him and get value for him. You do always need a 3rd catcher option.

If in 2025 the twins are lowering or keeping there payroll a major league minimum play needs to replace both Farmer and Margot.  Helman and Martin would be perfect replacements but you have to find out in ‘24 if they can do it.

It's hard for me to understand how frustrating it must be for you guys in MN trying to watch the Twins because I've had to subscribe to MLBTV for years in order to watch games from down here in Albuquerque

I would pay for MLB or a streaming service that allowed me to watch but they are black-out.  We get 3 maybe 4 games to watch this year.  One on TBS because they were playing NYY, one on Apple TV+  had to renew my subscription for $9.99 but will cancel after this month and 2 on FOX.

We seem to have the resources to solve what you call a problem. If we do trade or rent a player, it means giving up someone who could help later on and I'm not sure that would be a smart move. I'm not giving up on Julien or Kirloff just yet. I also think that, if Miranda loses playing time, he will lose his swing and slump down. Why the team would waste time with someone like Farmer is a mystery to me. Santana has been through the wars and his experience could be helpful. Castro is a good fill-in and on base person. Vasquez does what a catcher is supposed to do- handle the pitchers and cut down a share of baserunners. The main thing for us is health. If we are healthy, we are ok. If not, we drop down to below .500. I agree that we need to bring up 1 or 2 minor leaguers rather than trade any of the resources we have.

I'm hoping he just jammed it, and the team had seen enough of him trying to play through it without a few days off. If he's only out for a week or two, it'll still give him plenty of time to get close to 100 plate appearances in at AAA before the deadline so the Twins could make a decision on whether or not he's ready for the big show. The question about Rodriguez is kinda the same as it was. Nobody is going to walk 25% of the time at MLB, so the 10% of the walks he's getting right now... will those become K's or batted balls? If they all become K's, he's probably not a viable MLB player. If they all become batted balls, he could be excellent, but there's probably a mix in there somewhere.

    Just my thoughts on it!
