Bringing Up Young Players

A question from someone in blissful ignorance.

Sano and Buxton are moving up through the minors in hope, I guess, that their skills develop to the ML level. These two are unique talents as described by those who should know.

My question is how successful have clubs been getting top prospects this experience in the majors? I understand with pitchers there is a chance of blowing out an arm trying to pitch to seriously advanced hitters. I don't see this with hitters.

Are there any recent cases of someone being brought up WAY ahead of their normal schedule? If so, how did it work out?

A great example of someone being promoted to the majors too early is Carlos Gomez. He had floundered for years and finally at age 27 has "found it" and became a deserving All-Star. It messes a lot of things up to promote too early. The arb and free agency clocks are started early, guys run out of options, and some guys are non-tendered mostly because they've started their clock too early.

Huge jump to major league pitching. In talking about being ready, it really means ready to struggle. Arcia is ready to struggle. Hopefully, a year from now Sano and Rosario will be ready. Maybe even Buxton. When Sano arrives, he will likely start with good power, a low batting average and many strike outs. He will grow from there.

Just why are you saying that, I don't remember that anybody was trying to do that. I remember a very young, rather inexperienced player who hadn't harnessed his tools. It seemed that the Twins were trying to get him to use his speed better, take better AB's, make throws to the cutoff man, etc. All things that would help and probably did help make him a better player. Taking shots at the Twins organization over how they handled Gomez needs a little more specific examples than you provided.
