Justin Morneau staying or leaving?

Yeah, his production dropped off a cliff for some reason during the 2010 season. What was it? Oh yeah, a career-threatening concussion. He's just now getting back to his old self health-wise. So there's at least a chance his production will follow.

Let's hope so. It would be a benefit in the short term and in the long term he could hopefully bring back some nice prospects!

IIf they don't sign him, they should do the Cuddyer thing and sign a capable replacement for his expected production. I don't like our in-house options, at least until Vargas, Harrison, Keplar, or Walker are ready, assuming Sano stays at third.

That's what Parmelee is. Heck, move Plouffe to first if you have to.

You mentioned Vargas. Interestingly enough he has to be in the 40-man next season not to be exposed to the Rule 5 draft (MLB part) or in Rochester's roster for not to be exposed in the MiLB part of the draft. But Vargas is a DH.

Interesting take since Plouffe has a higher OPS than Morneau....

By your logic imagine how much better Plouffe would be with the Hammer hitting behind him.

I dont get the Plouffe hate on this board. He is not an all star but he isn't terrible either.

Yep, hammer would protect any hitter in front of him, including plouffe. Glad you followed.

Morneau's last 8 games he's batting .438. This year at Target Field he is batting .369, .414 obp, slugging .569 and has an ops of .983. The only issue is his road play. Also his ops is HIGHER than Plouffes after todays game (.755 to .738) Let's just hope the last 8 games are not a mirage and he can start hitting on the road.

Hes getting better as the year goes on, now hes on pace for 130RBI and hes batting .296avg. He has never been a big power guy but his power numbers should go up as the year goes on. People have to stop looking at advanced stats so much, all that matters is his avg is back to normal aswell as him batting runs in.

I honestly don't understand your recollection of Morneau. Morneau was a great power hitter with 3 seasons of 30+ HR's.

This isn't an advanced stats thing. He has done very little since coming back from his concussion 2.5 yrs ago. The only business case for keeping Morneau is that fans like him and he's not a bad player. I like the idea of bringing Morneau back but I think people need to be realistic as to the level of player that Morneau currently is.

I'll take the level of player that he currently is over anyone. If there was an ignore button to push on "trade Morneau", I'd be hammering on it.

I like Morneau, too, but 1B has to be the easiest position player to replace. You can get the same or more production for a lot less money, and then you can use that saved payroll to improve the other glaring holes on the roster.

Here are the 2014 1B FAs:

Corey Hart (32)

Todd Helton (40)

Eric Hinske (36)

Xavier Nady (35)

Mike Napoli (32)

Paul Konerko (38)

Casey Kotchman (31)

Adam Lind (30) -

James Loney (30)

Kendrys Morales (30)

Mike Morse (32)

Lyle Overbay (37)

Carlos Pena (36)

Mark Reynolds (30)

Kevin Youkilis (35)

And that's not counting the multiple, even cheaper, in-house options. If Morneau goes through the Free Agency route and discovers that he is willing to come back for say, 2 years @ $16M or with a team option for Year 3 for a net cost in the low-$20sM, I'd say go ahead, but I doubt Morneau would settle for that.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Give me a player that still has something left in the tank. Give me the more talented player any day.

I'm okay with not trading Morneau. As of right now he's not bringing back anything in prospects. In addition the only business case for bringing back Morneau is pretty much fans like you. His performance doesn't really merit it although he could finish the season stronger than he currently is.

Chris Parmelee is 3-for-22 (.136) over his last eight games.

A lone double counts as his only extra-base hit during that stretch. It's an awful time for Parmelee to scuffle, as Oswaldo Arcia has clearly passed him on the depth chart, relegating himself and Ryan Doumit into a platoon. If Parmelee (.214/.301/.337) continues to hit like an injured utility player, he may find himself in the business class on a flight to Rochester soon.
