Twins Island of Misfit Starting Pitchers

I see that Jon Garland has been released from the Seattle Mariners. Does anyone think the Twins should sign him to a minor league deal and see how it plays out?

Maybe this year we have some starting pitching depth, but that definitely only plays in the quantity department, certainly not quality.

Even though he has had a bum shoulder the last two years, he has had a good spring training stat wise. Some say that spring training pitching stats don't matter much, but his line trumps most or all of our starting pitchers this spring.

My vote would be yes, and although he is pretty much the same as rest of the lot, he would have a 1st class ticket on The Boat heading to the Twin's Island of Misfit Starting Pitchers.

Kevin Correia would be called upon to be the head of his welcoming party.

Why not let the prospects get as many opportunities as possible to prove themselves? Garland is old and would not be around for long.

Hey, that's one of my favorite parts of the Rudolph TV classic! All of those toys found homes where they could be loved and appreciated.

And let's be honest - who hasn't been a misfit at some point in their lives?

My issue with Garland is not that he is 33 this season, but that we have a boatload of pitchers already (to keep with the nautical theme). I would prefer that we see what each of these guys can bring to the table. I'm talking about Cole, Sam, Liam, Kyle and some of these younger guys as well. As long as this is a rebuilding season let's see what there is to work with.

Apparently I've surrendered hopes of a truly effective starting rotation for this season.

Com estem Lesser Dali. As fate will have it, I live quite close to the Greater Dali Museum in Figueres and his home in Cadaques and baseball is the only American sport that I still follow, albeit with great zeal. But I digress. The Twins need a middling, back of the rotation starter as much as se hacen falta tetas en un toro.

buen día bcntwinsfan. As I am Lesser Dali my Spanish speaking and interpretation skills are not so good - being that, I was still able to piece it together.

Your response to this thread is the best response I have ever received and will make my day all the much better.

I can only surmise that the Salvador Dali Museum is a must visit in one's lifetime.

Unfortunately, pessimism is behind my being okay with the Twins signing Garland. When one of Correia, Pelfrey, etc., etc implodes, which recent history indicates could be a definite possibility, our starting pitching depth will again be left in shambles.

I am totally on board with some of the prospects getting their licks in (Hendriks, Gibson, Hermsen), but realistically, Gibson will be on a pitch count and Meyers and Mays are not ready. That could change, but I am no fortune teller.

Signing Garland is not a big risk... if he will have us of course.

Aw shucks. It appears that Jon Garland has signed with the Colorado Rockies.

He must have missed pitching and giving up HR's in a Home Run orientated Ballpark.

If that is the case, he found a good suiter.

I would have given Garland a flyer.

I'm not sure which "prospects" we are talking about anyways, Gibson is on an innings limit and the only other real "prospect" in the system who is close is Hendriks who will certainly get his chances this year regardless. Guys like DeVries, DeDuno etc are not prospects and continue to be nothing more then org filler at the end of the day, as unsexy as Garland is, at least he had shown the ability to pitch around 200+ IP with a sub 4.50 ERA which does hold some semblance of value in the majors.

Though I'm not exactly heart broken that he signed with the Rockies...meh.

Me thinks Mr. Deuno will finally flip the switch sooner then later , and he will become a late blooming surprise pitcher, much the same as R.A. did , maybe not the same sucsess but will be a quality pitcher
