Mackey: Hicks Has Turned CF Competition Into A Blowout Early

Interesting article by Phil Mackey. It discusses how GMs often try to delay the start of a player's service time clock. He seems to be mistaken on how "Super 2" status is determined though.

. . . halting a player's service time clock is often a viable reason for holding off on a major league promotion. This is done mostly to ensure a player won't reach "Super-2" status -- meaning arbitration-eligible after only two years of service time instead of three. If a player has been on a major league roster for two full years to start his career, he will almost certainly reach Super-2 status.

. . . keeping Hicks in Triple-A until June or so would likely ensure he doesn't become arbitration-eligible after only two years.

Reading the article (specifically the game accounts), make Benson seem like a hopeless cause :)

I'd love for them to go full blown youth movement in the outfield with Benson/Hicks/Parm (until Big O is ready).

I think the only question coming into ST was whether Hicks was ML ready. If he was, it didn't matter how the other two performed and it looks like that's what is happening.
