I think this can be done, but I just don't remember how to do it.  I was having a discussion last night with some friends and one was arguing that Joe was the best 1B in the AL.  Can I sort batting stats for 1B (AL only)?  If so, can somebody explain how?

I think what you want requires using their "Play Index" feature, which requires a login. I don't remember what options they offer for short-period use, as opposed to a one-year subscription which I use.

 

This URL will show you the search that I just conducted along the lines you ask. If you click on it, you should see partial results, which will not satisfy you but at least gives you 1) an idea of what you get, and 2) a first cut at constructing the search criteria, which you may want to play around with. You might for instance add a minimum number of plate appearances. With enough criteria, you can cherry-pick like a boss.

 

I'm not sure whether you can narrow it down to just the games or plate appearances where he was actually in the game as a 1Bman, as opposed to his games at DH.

I don't know who would argue that Mauer was the best 1B in the AL. He's top 10 in ESPN's calculation of WAR, but he's not close to the best. Second in batting average though. Maybe that's what he was getting at?
