Behind the Fence: Ynoa, Balazovic get stretched out, Nick Greenwood and Keaton Steele Rehab

Another great weekend in SWFL for baseball and the EXST is getting into stride as the starting pitchers are starting to get stretched out going 3 innings.  On Friday at the Jet Blue complex, Huascar Ynoa and Edwar Colina both started and went 3 IP.  Ynoa worked in his slider and changeup with his fastball that has good late sink at 92-94 mph.  Colina was also working a slider and a change but his fastball was 94-96 mph yet with not much movement.

On Saturday, Miguel DeJesus and Jordan Balazovic started both going 3 innings.  In Game B, Balazovic was impressive with mixing of breaking balls with his 91-92mph fastball that he commanded well.  In Game A, DeJesus was throwing his fastball 92-93,  Relieving Balzovic was rehabber RHP Keaton Steele whose fastball was 90-91 and went 2 IP.

Following up DeJesus in Game A was LHP Nick Greenwood and it was interesting.  Greenwood came in and was throwing like any other pitcher but after the first batter Twins' trainer Corey Dietze was barking from behind homeplate what seemed to be about Greenwood not extending/getting over on his fastball.  After the next batter came up, the Dietze called time in the game from behind home plate and then proceeded to head to the mound.  My inclination in hindsight is that it had to do with Greenwood's velocity as that is what the trainer was watching as well.  Nick topped at 87 mph and was sitting 77-82 mph.  Greenwood threw for another two batters before being pulled and throwing in the bullpen again.

After Greenwood's abbreviated outing RHP Kam Mickolio came into the game getting 4 outs with a fastball 91-93 mph.

RHP Jose Martinez finished up the game, going two innings, striking out three with a 92-94 mph fastball.

Back in Game B, after Balazovic and Steele, Venezuelan 21 yo RHP Melvi Acosta and Dominican 21yo RHP Amilcar Cruz came into the game.  Acosta threw his fastball 93-94 mph but had control issues.  Cruz was 91-93 mph with his fastball and showed a decent 80-82 mph slider.

Side note, RHP Griffin Jax is listed on the newest and most up to date EXST rosters and is slated to see some game action hopefully.

Also, the Twins are converting Trey Cabbage from 3B to LF.

I'll have Monday's wrap up later this evening or tomorrow morning.  RHP Brusdar Graterol was on the mound he showed flashes of brilliance.

Ouch.  The 3B situation in this organization is wide open.  Off the top of my head, besides Blankenhorn, he is one highest regarded prospect at that position.  (despite his poor performance last year)

Who is playing 3B down there?  Javier? Miranda?

Both Javier and Miranda are getting the bulk time at SS right now in split games.  Miranda has played a little 3B, but Javier has strickly played SS and has honestly looked pretty good overall, strong arm, quick feet, hands are a little hard, he's botched a few easy plays and made a few good plays in the hole as well.  Joe Cronin and Emmanuel Morel have been logging alot of time at 3B recently.

At least there are mountains and wineries...

And the Hillsboro Hops, which last time I left the area, the Beavers AAA had left town, so there is at least baseball somewhere at somepoint for a couple of months in Oregon.

We lived 5 mins from the stadium last summer, and never went. If I had some guys to go with, to hang out, that would work. but with my wife? Golf, hiking, wineries, etc wins the day (as they should).
