Justin Haley was Born June 16, 1991, Orangevale, CA. (Some places say Sacramento?) he attended High School at Bella Vista, CA. He's a big guy at 6' 5", 230lbs. He was drafted in Round 6 in 2012 by Boston out of Fresno State.

2012: Haley began his professional life in short A starting 12 of 13 games. He struck out 33 in 33.1 innings while walking 16 and posting a 1.89 ERA.

2013: Haley spent the season in Low A. He appeared in 26 games, starting 24 and posting a 3.68 ERA. He struck out 124 in 124 innings while walking 74.

2014: Haley pitched 19 games for High A and 6 games for AA in the Boston system posting a 2.35 ERA. He started 17 of those 25 games. His strike out rate dropped as he threw 130 innings but struck out only 107. He improved his ERA by walking only 39.

2015: Haley spent the whole year in AA. He started all 27 games he appeared in striking out 95 in 124 innings while walking 50 finishing the year with a 5.15 ERA.

2016: Haley returned to AA for 12 more games, all starts. He struck out 59 in 61.1 innings and got his promotion to AAA. He threw 85.1 more innings striking out 67 more hitters in 15 more appearance, 14 starts. He gave up 45 walks on the year.

This past off season, the Red Sox left Haley exposed to the rule V draft and the Angels took him. They promptly traded him to San Diego who then flipped him to the Twins. He made it threw the cuts and the Twins have stashed him in the back of the bullpen. On April 5th, Haley made his MLB debut pitching one scoreless inning without a K or BB.

3 games, no holds, 1 save, 8 innings, 8 hits, 4 runs, 4.50 ERA, 2 HRs, 8 Ks, no walks, 1.00 WHIP, .250 BAA. Despite being a rule V, he doesn't appear too buried in the bullpen.

Activated from DL

1.275 WHIP and 4.72 ERA with a 7.4 K/9 in 13.1 innings. He has allowed 10 runs but only 7 earned. A good chunk of that because he's allowed 3 HR's.

Haley has only appeared in 16.1 innings so far this year. He has one save but has not logged a hold, win or loss yet.

Haley's ERA is a nice (sarcasm) 6.06 with a 1.41 WHIP having allowed 11 Earned runs including 3 home runs. The opposition is hitting 281/338/531 for a solid (if your the opposing team) 869 OPS against him.

Hmmm....Silver linings...

Haley is throwing 64% of his pitches for strikes and has a 7.16 K/9 vs a 2.76 BB/9. These are indeed solid numbers.

Some interesting numbers: He likes the 4 seam fastball and has thrown 187 of them (dude needs to throw something else more?) His avg FB is 90.26 MPH and has an exit velocity of 83.82 when hit.

Also, Fantasy predictions have his ERA dropping to 4.26 by the end of the year so some stats geeks somewhere think he's had some bad luck...

Hadn't looked at this before, but he had essentially the same AAA stats (WHIP, ERA, K/9, W/9, SO/W) in 2016 as Jason Wheeler did for the Rochester Red Wings. Difference is that Wheeler executed his stats in 185.1 innings while Haley gathered his stats over 85.1 innings.

Coming into 2017 Wheeler had pitched 228.1 innings in AAA over 3 seasons. Haley had pitched 85.1 innings in AAA over 1 year. Haley had started 14 games in AAA, Wheeler had started 40.

Haley is 8 months older than Wheeler. Wheeler is left handed.

I have nothing against Justin Haley. He is probably a good guy. And I don't think Wheeler should get the initial nod just because he has been with the Twins, though posting similar stats, you can imagine how that feels up and down the farm system if it appears that service time means nothing to the FO.

I get that Falvey is supposed to be a pitching guru and I do wish Haley all the best, but if I played in the MN Twins farm system this move, and the FO hanging on to the mediocre results, would concern me.

Agree. I would much prefer giving wheeler a shot over wilk/tepesh

Haley remains hidden on the DL.

I had some questions:

What does spending most of the year on the DL do for Rookie status?

How much time can he be on the DL as a Rule 5?

Haley earns MLB service time on the DL. But rookie status (as far as qualifying for ROY) is dependant on reaching 50 IP and/or 45 days spent on the ACTIVE roster not including in September. I would guess he's only been active about 20-25 days so far.

As far as I know, there is no limit to the amount of time he can spend on the DL.

I wonder if Haley to the 60 day might be one of the 40 man moves they make. I haven't heard anything about his status forever. That, I'm not sure is allowed however. Returning him to Boston is an option, of course. Not a whole lot of flotsam left on the 40 man for pitchers. Wimmers is about it.
