The Tigers' closer and the Royals' starting catcher injured in the same WBC play

To add irony, the player sliding into Perez was Drew Butera, his KC teammate and backup.

Are MLB rules in force for these games? I confess not being clear about the rule regarding plays at the plate. It looks like Perez didn't give Butera a path to the plate. And it appeared that Butera did not slide toward the plate but rather directly into Perez.

Yeah.  Butera wanted himself a starting position ;)

That should have been a run if MLB rules were in plate.   Perez was at fault there

Thanks for posting this.

I saw the note in gameday Butera was thrown out at the plate, then went searching for an update and saw some headlines for Perez' injury.

The injuries are sad and unfortunate to say the least.

The pitcher just made an awkward step while relaying the throw?

I gotta admire Italy's feistiness so far.

Sounds like Perez will be fine, which is good to hear. Apparently no hard feelings between the two either, just a good hard baseball play.

It didn't look like it was even especially hard contact at the plate, although the camera angle might not be the best to judge by.

Quite a freak injury for the pitcher.
