Jeff Smith was drafted by the Twins in 1995. He got all the way up to AAA for the Twins as a catcher before retiring. He became a coach in the GCL in 2005 and has coached in Beloit, Ft. Myers, New Britain and then back in Ft. Myers before being named the Twins 1B coach this season.

His knowledge of catching was one reason he got the job. His familiarity with so many of the young Twins prospects is another.

"I've had a lot of these guys at multiple stages in their career whether it was Beloit, Fort Myers, in the instructional leagues or from when I go down to the Dominican," Smith said. "I think the big thing is relationships and not just on the field. I know about their families and who they are as a person. I'll continue to let those relations grow."

Smith should say whether any of these players who he "had" like him.  And what kind of "relationships" he has with them.

I'd love to hear what Sano would have to say, for one...

Despite my dutiful dedication to the entire Twins organization for over 40 years, I am embarrassed to admit two things. The first being I had thought Smith had a cup of coffee with the Twins back in the day. The second is, life getting in my way and obsessive speculation over Dozier and other matters, I had almost forgotten Smith was named to the ML staff. (Go ahead...shoot me or throw one at my ear, life has my brain on mush cycle these days, lol).

I understand the previous comment made by Thrylos. There have been whispers regarding Smith's approach in the past as to whether he may be abrassive or too hard nosed at times. But he has been the good soldier for the organization. He has been successful as a milb manager. He does have knowledge of a lot of the Twins young players. And while a lot of us, including me, have questions about Molitor as a manager after the last two very different Twins seasons, I have a definite respect for him as a baseball man. And his comments about Smith growing as a manager and instructor does carry some weight, IMO. Proof is in the pudding, or more importantly, what we see on the field. Time will tell and show. But a little bit of a hard edge wouldn't be a bad thing would it?

Sano has been fully supportive of Smith in any interviews.

The thing that is not really reported is that he hit that HR off an ex-teammate who used to be a pain in the ass for Sano and all other Latinos in the clubhouse...

Hadn't heard anything about that at the time--
