Money helps. In both cases, they took on players that may be overpaid, reducing what they needed to give up. It's not a small factor.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Dodgers were awarded claiming rights on Phillies' left-hander Cliff Lee.

 

We've heard plenty of speculation about the identity of the claiming team over the past hour, but the Dodgers made the most sense, as the new ownership has plenty of money to spend and have already shown that they aren't afraid to make a big splash. The Dodgers now have three days to work out a trade with the Phillies, but Morosi and Jon Heyman of CBS Sports are both hearing that a deal is seen as unlikely. The Phillies have the option of pulling Lee back from waivers and keeping him.

Dodgers acquired RHP Joe Blanton from the Phillies for a player to be named player or cash considerations.

The deal was agreed to after the Dodgers claimed Blanton off waivers this week. While the Dodgers didn't end up acquiring Ryan Dempster before Tuesday's trade deadline, Blanton isn't the worst backup plan. The 31-year-old right-hander has a 4.59 ERA and 115/18 K/BB ratio over 133 1/3 innings this season. And while he's served up 22 homers, at least Dodger Stadium is a more forgiving home environment than Citizens Bank Park. He should be useful insurance for the rotation as Ted Lilly works his way back from shoulder issues. The Dodgers will be responsible for the roughly $2.9 million left on his contract. Aug 3 - 4:34 PM
