The 17 year old phenom, Wander Javier, hit in the batting cage with Tommy Watkins throwing to him.  Javier did not disappoint hitting two over the fence in his short outing. Javier says his hamstring has fully healed and he showed no ill effects of it in the field while working on grounders, running the bases for situational play, and performing sliding drills.

Thanks Bob. Has anyone explained why he lost the entire season to a hamstring injury? Don't hamstring injuries usually take 3-4 weeks AT MOST to heal? Was this particularly bad? Even if he tweeked it a second time, how did he lose the entire season?

It depends on how bad the pull is.  I've personally done that a couple times. It's painful and it takes a long time to resume running again, and these guys run for a living, which makes it much easier to re-tweak (rounding bases, I'd add is a common way to pull one).  I'd also note that DSL seasons are a bit shorter too.

He's likely going to be in the GCL next year, at least based on how he did in the DSL, so I don't think being cautious really hurt his career.  Hopefully though, it's a lesson on good nutrition, hydration, and warmup disciplines. That can certainly help reduce the frequencies of those types of injuries.

They've been consistent the whole time. It was his hamstring.

And more clarification, I've been re-brushing up my Spanish lately, so I asked him in his native tongue how the hamstring was and he gave a much more elaborate response than yesterday when asked in English.  In translation for what I got, he said it was so-so, he hurt it again when he thought it was good in the Dominican.  The team is holding him out of sprinting drills for the time being but is having him do all the basic fundamental drills.  When I asked him about playing in games, he said that he would be playing. On a physical comp, he reminds me of Jorge Mateo of the NY Yanks.

He did get his first taste of autograph hounds today too, signing a few bats and balls for dealers.

In case you were wondering, Wander took part in long tossing drills but was held out of the rest of fundamentals (fielding, baserunning, sliding, hitting) practice.  He left practice early with the Trainer Chad Jackson, probably just precautionary.

Great soundtrack, too.  Let's hope he's TNT Dynamite!

LOL, yeah I usually ask the player what's their favorite song and I'll put it up with the video.  I couldn't find the person that Wander wanted so I figured no one can really dislike TNT.
