Stuart Turner - 2016

Stuart Turner
DOB: 12-27-91, in Eunice, LA
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 210
Position: C
Bats: Right
Throws: Right

Shane's 2016 Prospect Rank: 33

2016 statistics (Chattanooga):

87 PA, .227/.333/.360 (.693), four doubles, two homers, eight walks, 22 strike outs, two steals, one time caught stealing

Turner is a fine defensive catcher. His offense has been about as expected, and it has been pretty consistent. His 2016 AA stats are very similar to his 2014 A+ stats, with 2015 being a lower point in AA. The defense will get him to MLB,and his potential .650-680 OPS in MLB would keep him there as a backup. I imagine he will be up this September.

Turner has an OPS of .649 and his CS% is 32, both of which are pretty much in line with his career numbers.

To me, it is doubtful that he makes it to the majors with any impact.

Yeah he doesn't sound like a guy we can pin our hopes on to make an impact on the Twins. Unless he's a gold glove caliber C, I'm not too excited about a .650 OPS guy in AA.

.636 OPS and a 35% CS. There is only a mild improvement over last year's AA numbers. In essentially a full season of AA ball he has a .633 OPS. There is no way he should be promoted anywhere this year.

Turner is hitting better, raising the OPS to .683. Actually he has taken more walks. I do think that his play warrants a move to AAA for next season.

2016 Summary

370 AA plate appearances, .239/.322/.363 (.686), 22 doubles, six homers, 35 walks, 72 strikeouts, five steals, three times caught stealing, and a 40% CS rate.

Though not inspiring, these numbers are improvements over Turner's 2015 time in AA.

2017 Outlook

I would say it is likely back to AA for a bit in 2017, especially with the likelihood of Mitch Garver in AAA. Turner will be in AAA by June or so. If he can get over a .700 OPS in the minors, than his 2016 AA stats might be close to what his MLB numbers would look like starting in 2018. For a very good defensive catcher, those numbers are fine.

Question is, do you give a 40 man add to Turner? Judging by this breakdown, and the countless other needs the team has, I'd pass on him for Garver and take the chance he passes through the rule 5 draft.

I haven't inspected the 40-man and the possible additions thoroughly, but right now I would definitely add him.
