Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 "It’s a little surprising, in the current inflated reliever market, that Abad wasn’t able to snag a major league deal"... "Kudos to the Twins for being able to acquire him so cheaply" from http://puckettspond.com/2015/12/17/minnesota-twins-sign-fernando-abad/The fact that Abad was expected by some observers to get a major league deal would support my point, no? His minor league contract with salary clause is likely a de facto major league deal that doesn't cost us a roster spot right now, a strategy the Twins have used numerous times over the past 5 years.
sane09 Provisional Member Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 THis minor league contract with salary clause is likely a de facto major league deal that doesn't cost us ...Except in the case of Abad and his salary clause, it's probably a minor league signing in name only, and he's guaranteed to be added to the roster for opening day if healthyThe difference being that Abad has to be EFFECTIVE and/or healthy or the Twins can cut him.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 The difference being that Abad has to be EFFECTIVE and/or healthy or the Twins can cut him.Difference from what? Kubel's minor league contract with MLB salary clause? Bartlett's? Recently Twins history suggests that Abad's salary and opening day roster spot is virtually guaranteed at this point, that's all I'm saying.
sane09 Provisional Member Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 "he's guaranteed to be added to the roster for opening day if healthy" Healthy or not,if he can't throw a strike in ST, that guarantee is no guarantee of anything!
sane09 Provisional Member Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 Kubel and Bartlett were kept temporaily for other stupid reasons.( Gardy's love and "veteran presence")If Abad is bad, he is A-gone.

Remember Sean Burroughs? I would guess that it will be virtually impossible for Abad to pitch his way out of that in his ~10 spring training innings.
