I would suggest you do the anti-wave that me and my buddies do. While the wave is going around you stand up cheering with arms in the air until it gets to you, then sit down while it passes and then stand back up and cheer. You are cancelling out a person across the stadium and helping it come to a quicker death, at least that's what we tell ourselves. 

 

But from your arguments it seems like you don't like people standing, so this may not be for you either. I would prefer to stand and cheer the majority of the time at live sporting events. If I wanted to sit in relative silence and watch games while sitting I can do that on my couch in front of the tv.

I would like this if it were only the wave-doers who were annoyed by your anti-wave. However, I have to think this would wind up annoying both the wave-doers and the wave-don'ters.

Edited to add: And if all the wave-don'ters did the anti-wave there would be far more people standing for far longer than if only the wave-doers stood while wave-doing.

Author is spot-on. The fact that a number of people are ripping the author, shaming him as an "elitist" just underlines the fact we're a selfish society more interested in being the show ourselves and unconcerned with bothering fans who came to actually watch THE GAME. Ever watch the guy (usually a guy) who's trying to start the wave? Smart aleck grin on his face as if "Heh-heh, watch-me-everyone" trying to gin up the wave? Yuck. Give me crowds of 18-20 K, minus the disinterested, make for a better baseball experience. No apologies....

The wave is as innocuous as singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch.

 

It is better than having to listen to "Chelsea Dagger" as the Blackhawks goal song.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words, and even to all the people that want me to not watch baseball anymore because non-fans inexplicably love throwing their arms in the air. This response has been incredible, makes my writing worthwhile.

get over yourself. It hurts no one. Judging other people for how they have fun? That is a good thing?

To everyone: There is plenty of judgement going on on both sides here. If you like the wave and want to make arguments for that, do so. Or if you don't think it's so bad, make your points. But let's stop with the personal comments of 'Get over yourself' or referring to the original poster as a jackhole.

Wasn't my intent .... But I see how it came across that way. It was more the"real fan" part that comment was aimed at, as if some fans were superior to other fans. Apologies.

This article was great, but I find it hilarious it creates outrage, from both sides!  

Number 1: the wave is stupid.  Don't do it!  That said, stupidity is rampant in far more areas than a baseball game, and I'm sure I do a lot of stupid things in other areas that are probably more offensive than this.

Number 2:  I've never seen the wave at a soccer game.  That's because I've never been to a soccer game.  But I highly doubt the wave would catch on, as it would either wake up the people attending, or worse yet, cause a riot.

Number 3:  I have the good fortune to travel quite a bit, and usually get to attend 1-2 other team's ballparks each year.  Sadly, this is not a MN only epidemic.  I've seen the wave at multiple ballparks.  Turns out there are a lot of stupid people around the globe, and I've since come to terms with the fact that I'm an Elitist Jackhole that knows better.  The burdens we have to carry...

Some people like the wave. It doesn't make them stupid. And it doesn't make you superior. This is what I was getting at with my moderator warning. Leave the judgements and personal assessments out of the discussion and stick to topic. I think we all can address a topic saying why we like or don't like something without the name calling.

And hey, don't rip Chelsea Dagger. It's a great song. Really. If you hate it that much, there is always a volume adjuster on your TV, and no doubt you'll never be forced to go to United Center against your will.

 

I don't mind the song; I just mind hearing it so many times as the Wild go down in flames year after year.

 

Maybe the Wild should use Joker and the Thief by Wolfmother.
