RealTwinsFan357 Verified Member Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 I'm not suggesting the Twins trade for Justin Upton right now, but should the Twins consider offering him a contract this offseason? Although signing him would not add left-handed power to this team, it would give us a fantastic hitter to bat behind Sano. My thought is that after trading for Upton, the Twins would be free to offer a deal for a young, cost-controlled catcher centered around Plouffe (Susac comes to mind). The Twins could then roll with this type of lineup:1. Dozier 2B2. Mauer 1B3. Sano 3B4. Upton LF5. Arcia/Vargas/??? DH6. Newly Acquired Catcher C7. Rosario RF8. Polanco/Santana/??? SS9. Buxton CFThis lineup looks pretty decent to me, especially the speed that comes with Rosario, Polanco/Santana, Buxton, and Dozier hitting consecutively. When/if Buxton is ready to lead off, everybody can just shift down one spot. What do you all think? I like this better than extending Hunter, and I think even with our minor league depth it's too risky for the Twins not to sign a FA outfielder.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 I think Upton would be looking for a pretty large long-term deal. I'd be pretty upset if the Twins gave any free agent a deal of six or so years when the team may have other young players in need of extensions. And if Kirk Gibson wanted to get rid of him because he had more talent than hustle, you can be sure Ryan and company wouldn't like him. They seem cut from the same cloth.
