Remaining playoff teams by payroll rank...

Giants (7)

Cards (13)

Orioles (15)

Royals (19)

11 of the top 12 payrolls didn't make it to baseball's final four....

While the Twins aren't likely to reach #7 ($154M) anytime soon, they've shown the ability to be in that 10-15 range on the right occasion.  That occasion almost certainly isn't 2015.

Could be 2016.

If payroll doesn't make a difference, the team should have stayed in the Metrodome.  They had a hell of a homefield advantage there.  I wonder why the team wanted to leave that place?

When you have young teams in the playoffs in the 15-20 range, they are typically getting a ton of productioni out of young, cheap players. Those guys are not going to be cheap forever.

Between the Royals and O's, you have the following players under $5M:

Gausman, Machado, Tillman, Chen, Duffy, Ventura, Moustakis, Aoki, Escobar, Hosmer, Holland, and Davis

Reminds me of the small ball Twins in 2002 and 2003, the little payroll that could.  Fast forward a few years and half of those guys are vets with huge salaries here and the other half are vest with huge salaries someplace else.

I think you've highlighted exactly how the Twins are going to compete for their next World Series.  It's not going to be by increasing payroll significantly to go out and sign all the top dollar free agents.  The farm could certainly produce the type of talent mentioned between the guys that have already graduated and those on the way.

Why isn't 2015 the right time?

If they have the ability to be in that 10-15 range, why shouldn't they always be there?

If payroll doesn't matter, where are the bottom 10 teams on this list?

I completely agree....when those guys are up and contributing is when you go out and add guys like Cruz and Shields.

The ability to do it isn't the same as always doing it.  I'd think they'll more commonly be in the 15-25 range.  Shouldn't payroll flex in step with your likelihood of success?

It matters.  Where are the top 10?

The Twins have the ability to be 12-16 in payroll every year.  We were 14th in revenue this year.  the Twin cities I believe is about middle of the pack as far as cities go.  Revenue dipping in the next year is a result of the product on the field.  I agree is should go up and down a tad...but normal should be a little lower than 15-25

Yeah, 20-25 is probably too low a range to consistently be in.

I'll revise to 15-20 consistently.  Ability to flex to 10-15 when in the prime phase of a "window" and 20-25 when rebuilding.
