Santana was called up only after the Twins had left themselves no other options, even when it was obvious in ST that P-Flo wasn't going to be ready to play at a major league level.

 

I used to agree that the Twins would play this game, but I do think some things have changed, mostly because the players used to get their layover in Low A, which now doesn't always happen. Hicks and Arcia were allowed to rise to the majors quickly, and others have been allowed to make multi-level jumps.

 

However, you're right that there is at least an arguement to be made that Gibson, Meyer and May were given the stop sign at AA and AAA. It may be intentional service time manipulation, though based on the pitching results for the last decade, I'm more inclined to think they simply don't know what they're doing when it comes to developing pitchers.

I don't think the handling of those three prove anything one way or the other, certainly not that it is the Twins MO to hold people down long after they have proven to be ready. There is plenty of good arguments for why Meyer and May are not up yet.

 

If it was solely service time considerations keeping them down, they would be up by now.

But the facts keep piling up, and the arguments keep getting less and less "good" and more and more "strange". Gibson's handling last year was troubling in comparison to the guys called up ahead of him (some of whom are even out of baseball entirely or playing on another continent) and the crazy promotions and lack thereof this year.

Changeup. Same concerns on height/fastball, but third pitch has come along rapidly this year.

 

I figured if Berrios continued to pitch well, KLaw would come up with some excuse why he was so down on him earlier. I doubt law saw him at all this year and went off assumptions because Berrios didn't just learn to pitch a couple weeks ago and go from a non-prospect to top 50.
