Good luck to the new Twins baseball leaders and a piece of advice

Twins Video

A lot of Twins fans have not realized it, after a season with the worst record losses, since the franchise moved to Minnesota, 103, but this week signified too major events for the Twins:

  • The start of the 2016-2017 off-season that finds them tied in the first place in the AL Central with a .500 record
  • The start of a brand new baseball leadership in the faces of Derek Falvey as the first ever Twins' Chief Baseball Officer and Thad Levine as the Twins Senior VP and General Manager. And, even more importantly, this is the first time that the Twins have hired their baseball leadership from outside the organization, since 1986 when Andy MacPhail, replaced (for practical purposes) Calvin Griffith, as the Twins baseball leader.

Hope runs high and I want to wish the new Twins' leadership good luck, and offer a single piece of advise:

Please do not assume, because the bar is so low and that hope runs high, that the Twins' fan base does not have high expectations. As a matter of fact, some of us are setting the bar not at the level of who you are replacing, but at the level of what happened the first time new blood infused the franchise. And that is a very high bar, set at the level of 2 World Championships in 4 seasons.

What would be your one piece advise to the new Twins' baseball leaders, along with your well wishes?

Please, please establish a learning organization, one that scouts itself as well as other organizations.

Don't stand pat. Baseball is a tremors game that really hasn't changed that much over the years. Oh, there are tweaks in philosophy over the years, and strategy and the such sure, but the game remains the same. Unlike other sports, such as the NFL, there aren't constant rule changes that affect the game itself. It's still 3 strikes, 4 balls, 3 outs and 9 innings, (normally).

There are a lot of nuances how to play the game and how to build a roster to be successful. You have a talented, young team and more talent on the way, a beautiful ballpark that is one of the best in baseball. You're not running a poor franchise, but you're not. NY, Boston, Chicago or LA either. Be smart, be aggressive at times, but don't just stand pat. Look for ways to always improve, at the ML and milb levels. Try new things. Be innovative, even if it doesn't always work. Be innovative, not passive or reactionary. Have a vision. Add when you can, flip when it seems prudent, but always keep moving forward.

The Twins used to do some of these things. And then they got bogged down. You don't have to necessarily create the new equivalent of "moneyball", but even in a mid market, in the conservative Midwest, don't fall in to a complacency trap. Be innovative.

Be aggressive, yet not reckless.  Don't sit back waiting for the phone to ring, identify the players you want to get and go out and get them.  Even though 3 team trades take a bit of work and creativity, pursue those where possible, as that avenue has been pretty much ignored.  Get someone in the draft that can make the majors in 2 years - this organization can't wait 4 - 6  years for a prospect.

Take advantage of the poor 2016 record by coming away from the rule 5 draft with a player and a pitcher.  If you can leverage that by moving around by trading and/or selling then so be it.  Take advantage of Tony-O. his Twins career and his positive experience living in Minnesota to recruit players with potential out of Cuba. Set goals for each and every player on the 40 man roster to accomplish BEFORE Spring Training.  Watch a lot of film and in addition to what you are told by scouts and coaches, trust your GUT.
