Paul Pleiss 401 Posted June 23, 2014 KV, should we then discount his first 28 outings of the season and assume the last 5 are the ones that matter? He's been a trainwreck this season. He can't get lefties out with consistency, and he's been putting way to many guys on base. Yes, his June numbers are improved, but what value does he provide even if he can pitch to a 4ish ERA for the rest of the season? There are half a dozen guys in the Rochester bullpen pitching better than that.
Hosken Bombo Disco 18,628 Posted June 23, 2014 I'd bet his odds are greater than 50-50 that he implodes at some point, but for now he's doing ok. It was actually about this time last year he had that awful game against the Yankees, and we have the Yankees coming to town in a couple weeks, so brace yourself for what's to come.
Brandon 3,803 Posted June 23, 2014 Paul, You and I have sparred about this on 2 different threads yesterday. I am going to agree that he should not be a long term solution. At this point he is the bullpens version of Kevin Corriea. the 5th starter or 6th man in the pen. For that roll he is fine. An ERA around 4 is passable and after the first month that's what he's been. If we can trade him we should. But yesterday I was pointing out that ERA for a reliever is a misleading stat because a few bad outings can give a misleading representation of the body of work. Burton has the same number of scoreless appearances as Perkins, whom he compares the most equally too. In terms of one game to the next He has been just as reliable as Perkins for games with no runs allowed and games with multiple runs allowed. Will this continue? probably not if his peripherals are correct. My question is how has Burton's stuff diminished? It appears to be a control issue from where I sit but I do not get to watch the games. So my question for you Paul is how has his stuff diminished to say he's done now? He is definitely not a long termer here because I get the feeling we would keep Guerrier over Burton next year. And we have a wave of relievers coming down the stream. Pressly, Achter, Zach Jones, Burdi, Tonkin, Melantokis. so the point is kind of moot anyway. There are teams looking for pitching depth and maybe we can package him with Corriea for something in July. But he is not ineffective and not done by any means.
jtkoupal 519 Posted June 23, 2014 I too have gotten over Burton. He is much too inconsistent. He has good stuff, but he is too hit-or-miss. I agree that there are a handful of guys in AAA Rochester who deserve a roster spot more than Jared does.
Paul Pleiss 401 Posted June 24, 2014 Brandon, I think we've gone just about every which way on Burton, mostly in the thread about this post over on the forums, so I wont rehash that here. Thanks to all of you for stopping over to enjoy my writing, or to disagree. The discussion, more than winning or losing, is the fun part for me.
