Frankie Montas

Twins Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ijr9gTviMl0

Finally, someone who shares the same opinion as me. Last deadline I suggested Frankie Montas as a SP option. I stated that Montas was the same formula as Sonny Gray. Good years with OAK, bad years with NYY, rebound with CIN & like Gray surge with MN. Montas was traded to MIL, his ERA was up & down but his K/9 was very interesting.  I was blasted for suggesting Montas much like NYM was for signing Montas now. NYM was able to take another former good OAK SP that was floundering SP Sean Manaea & was able to rejuvenate him. IMO Montas is close to 100% & is able to add a few extra clicks on his fast with a team like MN & become a very good pitcher. I predict Montas to have a very good season. Now I didn't expect MN to sign Montas for what he got but I was hoping that like last year, Montas wouldn't be signed right away  & settle for a much lower salary.

I think he's being overpaid. Over 15 million per year for an era near 5 last year? He hasn't been good since he was in OAK.

What were the chances that the Twins had any interest in Montas? Clearly he was going to sign for a seven figure salary. Whether that was $10M or higher, the Twins had zero interest in him due to cost. The Twins are almost certain to have a higher payroll than their Midwest brother, Milwaukee, and all of the AL Central teams. This means Falvey & Sons need to get on the phone.

You're going to think that about a lot of pitchers this offseason.

Montas had a few (6-7) very encouraging outings here in Cincinnati. …….similar results over a couple less outings in Milwaukee. He also had a pretty big number of 4-7 run outings over 3-6 innings. He was the epitome of zero consistency. David Festa can do every bit as well & hopefully, better!!

Picking up average pitchers for considerable $$ or for low $$ just doesn’t make sense to me. Team has guys with decent stuff at AAA and the major concern with them is consistency. Anybody available under $16M/yr is a major risk when it comes to consistency. Then there’s Blake Snell & his issues with consistency and injury …… for $35M.

As Boras as his agent & MN financial bind, there wasn't much chance he'd end up a Twin this offseason

CIN saw something in Montas as did MIL but IMO NYM will capitalize on him. I haven't been much in favor of past reclamation projects of the Twins or dipping into the bottom of FA's barrel. I agree with you guys that Montas wasn't really in MN's cards since Boras is his agent. OAK tends to damage SPs when showcasing them & when he finally recovers he'll still be pretty good. If Montas was available & we had the means, I'd bet on him
