You Just Don't Sano Part 1

Miguel Sano steps into the box. He is just a huge man. The game is tied at 1 and the opposing pitcher is locked in, but Sano already has 3 hits, including a double that hit the top of the fence. The pitcher has been working him away, and Sano is taking what he is getting, driving all three hits to right-center. He really has become a good all-around hitter in this league. The pitcher deviates from the game plan for just one pitch, comes inside, and Sano absolutely launches it to the seats i

More Thoughts on the Twins/Kernels Affiliation

The Cedar Rapids Kernels held a press conference Wednesday to introduce their new Major League affiliate, the Minnesota Twins. It was actually more of a public introduction to which the press was invited, but that was certainly the right approach by the Kernels. Affiliation changes are big deals in the local communities and when your organization hasn’t had a change in 20 years, it’s an even bigger deal.   http://knuckleballsblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/KernelsTwins-300x168.jpg

What makes Ryan Zimmerman the face of a franchise?

In 2005, and following several MLB trade rumours, Ryan Zimmerman was among the first ever group of players to be drafted in by new franchise the Washington Nationals.   He was immediately sent down to the minor league to hone his skills, but it wasn’t long before the former University of Virginia student was making headlines at the very top of Major League Baseball.   His statistics at the bat and in the field as the ball club’s starting third basemen are impressive, and his technical achievemen

Deep Starting Pitching Market Is A Lucky Break For Twins

I may have exaggerated a little. I know – shocking for a blogger.   For months I’ve been saying that this free agent class of pitchers is almost historically deep. That might be a little strong, unless you think history only goes back as far as 2007. Because based on the dollars that were thrown around, 2006-2007 was an unbelievably lucrative free agent starting pitching market – for the players. It didn’t work out nearly as well for the owners.   The top two contracts given out that year were u

The Big Question for the Off Season - Contend in 2013 or Rebuild?

First Up - Contend 2013.   If the Twins choose this - then hard choices and changes in their style is going to be necessary for them to contend next season. The press should be asking these questions.   Here is what they need to do:   Aquire 2 Starters either by Free Agency or Trade Trade a CF (Either Span or Revere) Aquire either 3B, SS, and/or 2B (At least one) Add another Reliever   The Hard choices:   Free Agency should be an option and should be used. Trade a CF - Span or Revere -

Point/Counterpoint - The Last Two Weeks of the Season

Point - The Twins should try to pass Cleveland for 4th place in the Division   The final two weeks of the season are extremely important for the Twins' momentum as they move into 2013. Currently, the Twins are in last place in the AL Central and the entire American League. This embarrassing situation is one that the Twins should work hard to remedy over the course of the next two weeks.   There are plenty of exciting players to watch on this team and the future seems very bright, even as earl

Twins to Announce Affiliation With Cedar Rapids on Wednesday

After weeks of speculation, a press conference has been scheduled for 1:30 Wednesday to announce that the Cedar Rapids Kernels will become the new Class A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins for the next four years. Twins officials toured the Kernels facilities Monday afternoon and met with the CR Board of Directors later that day.   The Twins, who have been sending their Class A prospects to Beloit for the past eight years, had been rumored to be favoring a move to Cedar Rapids for several we

Ben Revere, Contact King, and the Red Light of OBP

Ben Revere doesn't swing and miss often. So he doesn't reach many 3 ball counts, and what follows below can be taken with heavy salt.   Still, if there is meaning in his small sample of 3-ball data, then Ben Revere's high contact percentage allows for absolutist decisionmaking at the plate in order to maximize on-base percentage.   Observe, Ben Revere is already a patient hitter:   http://i.imgur.com/tJLMP.png     But Revere puts balls in play at such an efficient clip, relative to the no. of sw

Should Twins Sign Scott Baker Now?

Yesterday, teams looking for free agent starting pitching this offseason were dealt a minor blow by the Texas Rangers. Colby Lewis, the solid starting pitcher of the Rangers, re-signed with them at the bargain price of $2 million plus incentives.   If that sounds shrewd, it’s continuing a trend. Lewis has been outpacing the relatively meager sums the Rangers have been paying him since they signed him when he returned from Japan. In the three years since, he has thrown 500 innings for them with a

MicroQuestion - Buster Posey = Joe Mauer 2.0?

Yesterday, I posited that I believe that Joe Mauer is great. I stand by this, but I can see why some are frustrated with Mauer. Buster Posey, on the other hand, is seemingly working on wrapping up his first MVP award. Posey hits home runs, catches regularly and seems to be that emotional leader that many fans get behind. In his two healthy seasons, the Giants have won a World Series and are now serious contenders to win another one. So, my question is this - is Buster Posey everything fans

Yep looking to 2013 already.

I am a very frustrated Twins fan right now. I am looking at what could be a complete overhaul, or a spending spree for 2013. I am not sure what to root for. As of this second you have to look at what the Twins could throw on the mound next opening day roster.   Gibson? Baker? Diamond Walters? De Vries? Deduno? Hendriks? Duensing? (Please no) Blackburn? (Please no)   So lets look at diving into free agency this off season, and see who I can peg off the list. I am going to just shoot out

MicroThoughts - Joe Mauer

My Father-in-Law sent me a text yesterday afternoon. Here is what it said:   "I see iron man Mauer has missed five straight. Most overpaid player in the game. Have a great weekend."   The "have a great weekend" part was much appreciated, but the rest of the text just made me shake my head. I want to address each part of this text, as I think these are common sentiments expressed by Twins fans.   1. Iron Man quip.   Mauer plays a lot of games for a catcher. He has had years when he has mi

Twins Daily v. Internet Porn

I have been a Twins Daily participant since March of this year. It has sucked me in, and at times it has been educational, captivating and controversial.   My problem with Twins Daily is that I cannot find the time to fit internet porn into my schedule anymore. I am torn between two worlds and I am not sure what I should do?   In 2003, after work, I would roll myself a marijuana cigarette, smoke it, have a Rolling Rock beer and watch some internet porn.   In 2006, after work, I would lay out a l
