New Wild Card Format – Is It Working?

This article was originally published on Monday, Sept. 10, at Knuckleballsblog.com. It was with much fanfare that Major League Baseball announced a new, slightly expanded, postseason format as a part of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. It was reportedly solely due to the will of Commissioner Bud Selig that a way was found to implement the new format for the current season, rather than waiting one more year, when the leagues would be balanced and the spacing of postseason games could more

2012's Teachable Moments: Rage Quitting

Some know this, others don't. I'm secretly a teacher at a public high school that shall remain nameless. (If only to protect myself from principals who wonder why they hired a guy who thinks that beards are sentient.)   My job is great actually. When the baseball season starts it's a sign that the school year is rapidly winding down. As the battle for first place intensifies, I have many opportunities to watch and revel in exciting games. And by the time I get back to work I know whether or not

T.K, Morneau, looking forward to 2013, How can you not root for the Orioles

First off, I finally got a chance to watch T.K.'s speech after retiring his number. I have to say I haven't seen a more nervous person give a speech. I thought when Hrbek said that a lot of his number being up there has a lot do with the number standing next to me was pretty cool. I thought T.K. had a decent speech, I would have liked to hear a few more stories. I thought Morneaus enthusiasm about the entire thing made me really want to keep him around, he is one guy who I think appreciates

Mondayne Notes - 9/10/2012

I didn't provide a video last week, so here are two by Brad:   The Games Monday - Loss to Chicago - 4-2   I did not watch this game, as I had an awesome bout of food poisoning to keep me occupied. Deduno seems to have had a quality start, although the 3 Ks and 3 BBs don't make for a good ratio. Joe Mauer was caught stealing, so he is clearly overpaid. Tuesday - Win over Chicago - 18-9   Well, that was something. The offense lit up the White Sox and Phil Humber was far from perfect. Ch

Lew Ford Homers for Baltimore. Is our Flakiest Former Twin in the Playoffs?

Lew Ford homered to left center field off of C.C. Sabathia last night (9/8/12), his third home run in 55 at bats for Baltimore. Later in the game, Nick Markakis broke his thumb. He will be out for six weeks.   So, will Lew Ford be patrolling/platooning in right field for the O's if they make the postseason? LLEEEWWW hasn't spent a lot of time in Baltimore this season, but with Markakis out, one must ask the proverbial question, 'Will Baltimore Get Mileage from Ford' on their postseason roster?

Is it just me? or is Plouffe really arrogant?

Does anybody need competition more than Trevor Plouffe? Anybody else struggling like he is, would not be playing.   I know this wont happen, but I would love to see the Twins bring up D Romero from New Britain and let Plouffe watch a lot of baseball.   Plouffe seems very arrogant to me, like it doesnt matter, he has the thumb injury to blame it on...just wait until he recovers....and wait...and wait....   Sit him please, he needs a major attitude adjustment!

A look at the Weekend

Well here it is, September, the stretch run. For me tied for the second best time of year with opening week and trails only October. This is the time of year when series become critical. I know a win in April counts the same as a win in September. However there is one major difference, a team with a losing streak early in the season has all sorts of time to recover. Right now teams only have about 25 games remaining.   Now I know the Twins are out of it but if you call yourself a baseball fan y

Losing with Dignity - Conversations with Gardy

The end of a season is almost always disappointing. Only one team wins the World Series each year, and for each and every other team, there is some level of failure. Some teams fail a lot more spectacularly than others. Some fail like a gas main breaking or a lady falling out of a grape-stomping rig. In a lot of ways, the 2012 Twins are like the grape-stomping lady. They asked everyone for a break while they gathered themselves from the 2011 filled with injuries and disappointment, only to
