Beloit Snappers - Pictures and Videos from 8-22 and 8-24

I'd hoped to do a longer write-up but after playing aunt all weekend, it's just a short note. Work sent me to Illinois/Wisconsin and I caught Wednesday's and Friday's Beloit Snappers games. They lost in 12 innings on Wednesday night, but I was able to take a few pictures and videos. Sano made a pretty slick defensive play at 3rd. The ball took an awkward hop off the edge of the infield grass toward him, but he was able to bare hand it and throw to first for the out. Friday night was a win, but m

Short Bursts of Opinion, and a Belated Beer

Originally posted at k-bro's baseball blog   I have some little opinions on some news items, so I thought I'd share some of them.     ~~~     Scott Diamond received a 6-game suspension for throwing toward Josh Hamilton's head on Friday. He plans to appeal the suspension.     I'm glad he's appealing because I thought the whole situation was handled poorly. Roy Oswalt inexplicably beaned Joe Mauer in the back of the neck, I'm assuming because he was pissy that Pedro Florimon scored on a pla

Gleeman and the Geek: Ep 56: Morneau in Dodger Blue, Live From The State Fair

Aaron and John's last KFAN broadcast is live from the Minnesota State Fair. First they talk about the Twins slide, September callups and a report out of LA that the Dodgers pursued Justin Morneau this week. Then they are joined by Lindsay Guentzel who talks about the highlights and lowlights of living in the MLB Fan Cave, what it's like trying to build a career in media and why Aaron shouldn't lead with his hair on those first dates. Here are:     the podcasts the rss feed if you want to

Blind faith vs. evidence and reason

When coming to form one's beliefs or making evaluations about things, the rather vast ocean between blind faith and evidence sets up a stark contrast in reasoned (or un-reasoned) judgment. This post is not about evolution or theism, but about something much less important in the grand scheme of things.   This post is about the Twins' evaluation of Anthony Slama.   Let's first examine the evidence, sticking to Slama's minor league and major league statistics. In parts of four seasons in AAA Roche

Fresh Start for Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have made it clear they are looking to make a fresh start after trading four of their highest-paid players to the LA Dodgers, in a trade that has been seen by fans betting MLB as one of the league’s biggest in decades.     Starting pitcher Josh Beckett, first baseman, Adrian Gonzalez, left fielder, Carl Crawford, and infielder, Nick Punto, have left Boston to sign for the Dodgers, with James Loney, Ivan De Jesus, Allen Webster, and two as yet unnamed players heading the other

The right way to retaliate

So now that last night’s game is over and we have all had a good night’s sleep, what do we take away from what happened in the third inning yesterday? The first thing is to just recognize that this may not be over. Both pitchers gave the obligatory “I didn’t mean to do it” quotes after the game; everybody has learned the Cole Hamels/Bryce Harper lesson well. I can’t speak for the rest of you, but I didn’t buy either of those quotes last night, and I doubt MLB will either. Diamond’s pitch was mor

Twins Hitters Who Could Contribute to Playoff Team in the Future

The Twins are far from contending. It really is the sad reality. As much as we may think that adding two starting pitchers to the roster for 2013 will make the Twins contend, the reality is that 2 high quality starting pitchers added to this year's roster might have lead to a .500 finish. .500 teams are worthless in my mind. You either want to make the playoffs or rebuild, but you don't want to be in the middle. Middling teams usually do not compete for the playoffs and have difficulties dr

Pohlad backs Ryan

A heavy defeat to the Texas Rangers only further deepened the sense of disappointment felt throughout the Minnesota Twins, after another tough American League season.   The loss took the Twins’ MLB scores to a 1-8 on their current road trip and a season-worst 24 games below .500, leaving no one in any doubt that this year has been another failure.   Despite such a disappointing year, the Twins will not be changing their head coach, with interim boss, Terry Ryan, receiving the backing of the team

Friday Links-N-Thinks

Happy Friday to everyone in Twins Territory!   As a professional educator by day, I saw my summer come to an end yesterday with the start of another school year. It feels good to get back into the swing of things even though it's still hot and sticky outside. The Minnesota State Fair started yesterday and attending the State Fair is one of the things that I will miss most about living in the suburbs of the Twin Cities. The food, the fun, and the festivities of the State Fair are one of the great

Back to the Twins future ( cause the present is pretty bleak)

The future outfield of the Twins (Hicks, Arcia and Buxton)   - I currently hold high hopes that this trio might be united by 2015. not entirely sure how exactly they're going to fit into a lineup though. Hicks is certainly showing that he has the capability to become a top lead-off man and yet early on in the going Buxton is also displaying the speed to profile in such a position as well.   - At the moment I would give the leadoff spot to Hicks because he has the speed yet has also displayed a

My beliefs about what the Twins should look like in 2013

The Twins have several needs this offseason. Pitching is the big one, getting a few MI's who can consistently hit is another. Also, don't expect me to analyze contracts, because that is currently beyond my limited baseball intellect, just FWI.   They currently have two-three big trade chips that they are willing to listen on: Willingham, Span, and Morneau. If they are to trade Morneau or Willingham, one team they should focus on is the Rays of Tampa. They have the pitching we need, we have the o

An early blueprint for 2013

Soon it will be time to actually get serious about next year (imagine being a Cubs fan). Maybe a title like Dr. StrangeGlove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb of the 2012 Twins Season would be most appropriate here.   An early blueprint for 2013:   Trade Justin Morneau (Oakland, Texas, Tampa Bay would seem to be potential teams for this trade) for pitching prospects (hopefully at least one in AA or AAA) or even an arbitration-eligible pitcher. Maybe include paying for half o

Keith Laws recent thought about Scott Diamond...

Here is the a little piece from Keith Laws latest chat.   What are your thoughts on Scott Diamond? If Trout wasn't such a showoff, he'd be in the ROY discussion. Can he have long term success as a #3 type starter who induces a lot of ground balls?   [h=6]Klaw (1:50 PM) [/h]   Fifth starter, if that.     I respect Keith Laws opinion on most things, but this one is dead wrong.

What I would give for Anderson...

Having watched a lot of games this year, few pitchers have impressed me like Anderson for the A's. I would almost give up the farm for him.   But here is what I would offer on season end...   Morneau, Swarzak, Manship   Or maybe this.....Gibson, Sano, Swarzak   What would you offer for him?
