Twins Continue to Chase new Faces

Rumours about potential new recruits continue to circulate even after the Minnesota Twins added Mike Pelfrey to the 2014 payroll.     The Twins have now signed three free agent starters to join Kevin Correia in the rotation, but general manager Terry Ryan is believed to still be looking at adding more new faces.     According to the bet365 MLB betting page, the Twins reportedly remain interested in signing Bronson Arroyo even after bringing in Pelfrey.     It seems unlikely that the 36-year-old

Episode 64: Twins Trade Ryan Doumit

http://assets.podomatic.net/ts/19/ad/da/paulpleiss/1400x1400-347x347+0+42_9099158.jpg   Paul is away celebrating his birthday but this week on the podcast, Cody and Eric spend 60+ minutes talking about the Ryan Doumit trade, what to do with all of the Twins' mediocre pitching, and the awful All-Star Game Logos that the Twins are putting all over everything. Down on the Pond we take a look at the 2014 Minnesota Twins Prospect Handbook and the profile of Bryan Haar. They also talk beer, and base

Moves to Come?

As everyone who stays caught up on Twins news knows by now, Ryan Doumit was traded to the Braves yesterday for Sean Gilmartin. When I heard about this news, it got me thinking. At the moment, the Twins have a high number pitchers on their 40-man roster. After they added Gilmartin, their 2013 AAA pitching group got even more crowded, and I have a feeling that more moves might be coming to fix that.   The Twins' pitching rotation at the Major League level currently includes Phil Hughes, Ricky Nola

What's the Pinto Back-Up Plan?

Josmil Pinto is one of the top prospects in the Twins organization. Make sure to order the 2014 Minnesota Twins Prospect Handbook to learn more about the Twins minor league system. Diversity in the Minor Leagues

There are roughly 145 minor league players in the Twins organization. As I look at the Twins current players - I found these approximate numbers: 96 Players - White 66% 40 Players - Hispanic / Latino 28% 06 Players - African American 4% 03 Players - Asian 2%   Does anyone know how these numbers correlate with the rest of the (MLB) league? This has the Twins with at least 34% of their MiLB players being minorities. What happened to all the African American baseball players in America?

Scouting report of newest Twins' member LHP Sean Gilmartin

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch -----   The Minnesota Twins in an effort to reduce the logjam in the DH/OF position have traded Ryan Doumit to the Atlanta Braves for 23 year old minor league LHP prospect Sean Gilmartin. The 6'2", 200 lbs Gilmartin was the Braves' 1st round (28th overall) pick of the 2011 draft. Before he was drafted, he was named All American from Baseball America and before the 2012 season he was ranked as the Braves' 5th best prospect, and 4th best befo

Winter Meetings and Expectations

I typically take a little business trip to the Tampa/St. Petersburg FL area in December and did so last week.   After years of hearing about how interesting baseball’s Winter Meetings are, this year I found myself within reasonable driving distance of those Meetings when they officially opened up. That being the case, I decided I would check the situation out for myself.   http://knuckleballsblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/dolphinresort-600x400.jpg The Dolphin half of the Swan &

Five reasons that the Twins re-signing of Mike Pelfrey could be a steal

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ----   Late last week it was communicated, but not officially announced that the Minnesota Twins have reached agreement with Mike Pelfrey for a 2 year contract. The contract is for a base amount of $5.5 million per season and with the potential of additional $3.5 million in incentives through the life of the contract. Additional details about the incentives will be announced when the signing will be official.   There has been a lot of noise

Jimmy Rollins being shopped

MLBTR has an item stating that the Phillies would be willing to trade Jimmy Rollins. In the article, it's stated:   "Rollins, 35, struggled at the plate in 2013, batting .252/.318/.348..."   Meanwhile our resident starter pleased some fans with his progress, posting .221/.281/.330.   I don't particularly advocate trading for Rollins, as I assume the Phils want prospects the Twins won't want to part with and the Twins won't want to invest $11M a year in an aging player. I'm just mindful that o

Twins Rotation Starting To Look Crowded

Over the weekend, word came out that the Twins would sign Mike Pelfrey to a two-year $11 million deal. This is the third free agent starter the Twins have added this season as the team already agreed to terms with Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes. With Kevin Corriea under contract for another year, Minnesota's starting rotation is filling up rather quickly but there are still some questions to about the final rotation spot.   The Twins had one of the worst starting rotations in all of baseball last

Revelations in depth

The Twins have apparently made some changes in their official team depth chart. Rumors have swirled about Ryan Doumit not wanting to catch; that may be confirmed, because he is no longer listed as a reserve catcher on the Twins depth chart.     Also, the two Chris' are not on the right field depth chart list; both Parmelee and Colabello are listed on the 1B depth chart under Joe Mauer.     However, Doumit is listed at catcher on the active roster, and Parmelee is listed as an outfielder on that

What Are the Twins Doing... and Why?

It has been a weird offseason for the Twins, hasn’t it?   I’m not complaining. mind you. It’s refreshing to see General Manager Terry Ryan being aggressive in the free agent market to address the team’s starting pitching needs. Signing Ricky Nolasco to a four-year contract with a fifth year vesting option was more than a little out of character for the Twins.Adding Phil Hughes on a three-year deal two days later was almost downright giggle inducing.   (This article was originally posted at
