  1. FIP is going to be pretty useless to evaluate Kintzler IMO. The things that affect FIP the most are walks, strikeouts and homeruns. Kintzler tallies few of any of those.
  2. Of those 22 prospects, how many have been at AAA all season and are right handed bats? I wouldn't put much stock into prospect rankings when evaluating Garver. His advanced age severely impacts his status. Doesn't mean he can't help. Castro and Giminez are both knocking on the door of career highs in games caught. Having Garver could help freshen them up. He could also potentially get some at bats at first, dh or left field vs LHP. The reason Garver is likely to have a positive impact if he were brought up IMO is that the playing time he would most likely get would come at the expense of the two catchers, who are wearing down, and Mauer or Kepler vs LHP.
  3. Just out of curiousity, what makes B-R's WAR different from fangraph's? That is, what does one give greater weight to that the other does not?
  4. They probably feel he's too old to be considered a prospect. They aren't wrong. Doesn't mean he can't be a contributor at the MLB level. The Twins won't know until they let him play.
  5. Sano's OPS is also about 50 points lower thsn 2015. It perhaps would have been more accurate to say that there's been little, if any, improvement over the last TWO years. Also, nearly all of his OPS improvement this year is tied to his 35 point batting average increase which is in turn tied to his 60 point BABIP increase. So, one could argue, as I did, that there really hasn't been an improvement in his game, merely an improvement in his luck. As I said somewhere, his BABIP in 2017 is sky high (.385). Can he sustain that indefinitely? Probably not. His career BABIP is .365. Can he sustain that? Maybe. I'd say he's certainly capable of a BABIP of .330 to .350 for the next 5-7 years. But, without additional improvement, just a decrease in his BABIP next year to .350 drastically alters his batting average, on base, etc simply because he puts a relatively small number of balls in play.
  6. Exactly. Sandy Koufax ain't walking into the dugout anytime in the foreseeable future folks, to paraphrase Rick Pitino. And even a 12 man staff leaves few bench options. I'll also wager that most of the platoons that are out there don't involve a player who is top 10 in salary on the team. Even at $7 mil per year starting in 2019, Mauer would be in the upper half of the payroll ledger.
  7. Like I said, I don't want to make THIS thread about Sano. I posted in a Sano thread a bit ago. If you want to make your case there, I'll respond there.
  8. I certainly wouldn't call his season elitle level. Mid .800s OPS. In terms of WAR he ranks SEVENTH among AL third basemen. That's barely above average. To me, elite level is an OPS in the mid .900 range or better. Sano has a BABIP of .385. Doesn't seem likely that he can keep that up forever, although for his career it's .365, over more than 1200 PA. So, maybe HE can. He certainly hits the ball hard enough. But it all comes back to strikeouts. His K rate in 2017 is not statistically different from either of the last two seasons. Roughly 35.5%. His BB rate is also unchanged from last year (roughly 10%) and down considerably from his rookie partial season. I guess I was hoping to see more improvement. If this is who he is and who he will always be, I think that is a very big problem for the Twins. If he could cut his K rate to 20%, hell even 25%, he would be an MVP candidate. Clearly it has to be a focus point of the offseason. IMO the Twins won't be serious Championship contenders if Sano doesn't develop into an elite level hitter.
  9. Gimenez shouldn't be hitting 6th, even against LHP. He also had a horrendous day behind the dish. But IMO the team has bigger issues than the back up catcher. Miguel Sano for one. He's kinda turning into Mark Reynolds with a little batter batting average. He needs to cut down on the strikeouts if he ever is to become a truly elite hitter. In another thread it was noted that in terms of WAR, he ranks 7th among AL third basemen. That's basically average. That's sobering. If this is the guy that is going to carry the offense for the next round of "glory days", he needs to step it up considerably. He is certainly still young enough to do that, but IMO his offensive game this year is basically the same as last year. Little, if any improvement I don't want to make this thread about Sano. Just pointing out there are bigger fish to fry. I do think Garver should be up, at minimum as an extra reserve. Yes, the pen got a little taxed this weekend and some guys (including the manager) are still trying to figure out their roles and settle into them. My point is that the Twins still don't need 8 relievers IMO. They DO need another bat. Especially a right handed one. And no, I don't think having Garver up as a reserve will hurt his development. With Castro signed through 2019, the most he's going to catch the next couple years is 60-70 games a year anyway most likely. It's not like he's 23. The Twins need to utilize his position flexibilty and his bat to help the MLB team for these final 6 weeks of the season.
  10. There are 18 qualified CFers in the AL? How is that possible? Are some of them guys that play CF and also qualify at a corner? Interesting that Rosario ranks so low. He's been easily the Twins best hitter since early May. Just goes to show how much offense other teams get from that spot.
  11. Interesting decision to use Hildenberger 3 days in a row instead of Belisle, which would have been just two days in the last 5 I believe. Was there any comment from Molitor on the subject postgame? Not saying I disagree with the decision. Obviously Belisle is not a long term answer for the 9th. Hildenberger looked good obviously, but he got tagged just yesterday. I'm not sure he's a long term solution either unless he finds a way to get lefties more regularly. Edit: Hmm. Not sure I'm reading his splits right. .400 ish OPS vs lefties? .800 + vvs righties. SSS, obviously. And I know I looked at his numbers some time before and was skeptical that he could get lefties. But his to date numbers don't show much of a split at all in the minors.
  12. Again, how is a platoon at first base a viable option with a three man bench? The bench is now one catcher, one infielder, one outfielder. That's it. This isn't 1991 when the Twins were carrying 10 pitchers and thus had a 6 man bench everyday. Back then you could have a platoon at one position. Maybe even two. And have a guy who's primary job is to pinch hit. Those days are over. Benches now are all about positional flexibility and if you can get positive offense from ONE of them, great.
  13. I see a lot of speculation about Mauer being a future platoon or part time player. In these days where a 3 man bench is the norm, the days of platoon or part time players is over. At least in the AL. There simply is no room on the roster for a guy to only play first against RHP.
  14. They had that guy. They let him go. Remember? He's doing terrible this year, but he's almost exactly a league average hitter for his career.
  15. So, presumably not Belisle in the 9th. Gee? Duffey maybe?
  16. 3 bleeders through the infield.
  17. Vargas will be out of options next year. If Falvine valued what Vargas could provide over what Grossman provides as a DH, the Twins wouldn't keep sending him down. Point being, the decision on Vargas will be made before Mauer's contract is up.
  18. And as I understand it, it only burns an option if he is optioned out for more than 20 days. I don't know when the Red Wings season is scheduled to end, but we are exactly 20 days from September 1.
  19. I believe the 26th man has to be someone already on the 40 man. Of course, nothing prevents the Twins from adding Gonsalves to it prior to that date.
  20. Possibly Molitor watched Enns not get anyone out the second time through the order.
  21. IDK about outfield. I mean he wouldn't be/have been horrid. But he's never been fast. He was 30 when he switched to first. He would catch what he got to, but I think his range would have been WAY below average.
  22. It would be nice to get out of this game using only 3 relievers.
  23. The Twins traded AJ Pierzynski to make room for Mauer behind the plate.
  24. Yes, it does. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=3b&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=1&season=2017&month=0&season1=2017&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0
