  1. Hey, Santana finally made the third out look as easy as the first two. Hopefully, he is settling in.
  2. Neither Mejia or Santiago are sure things down the stretch or possibly beyond either. I don't know what the roster rules are for the one and done wild card game. But obviously a team would probably only carry one or two starting pitchers if that were allowed. Anyway, as it stands now, Gibson probably slots as the # 4. Very rarely will teams only use 3 starters in the ALDS or beyond. I certainly don't view Ervin, Colon or Berrios as candidates to pitch on short rest.
  3. Will be out in left field tonight with my mom. Dad was a big Twins fan. Lots of games attended by us as a family.
  4. I vaguely recall many on this site getting into an organizational bashing frenzy when Buxton's new hitting approach (shorter stride designed to make better contact) was featured in an article. I would pull it up, but am WAY too lazy today. So far the results are pretty good I would say. Who is going to belly up for the first serving of crow?
  5. I know it seems like the steroid era bypassed the Twins hitters, but I am pretty sure the Twins have never gone through a 119 game stretch hitting just 12 HR. Maybe the Senators back in the dead ball era.
  6. Zoilo Versalles won the 1965 MVP. Now, he probably had one of the best offensive seasons for a shortstop in the 60s by anyone not named Ernie. But he also posted a defensive WAR of 3 that year, almost half of his WAR value that season. I suspect that if there had been national sports talk radio in 1965, a lot of talking heads would have criticized the selection of Versalles as MVP. He didn't have big numbers in the "traditional" stats that voters looked at in those days (avg, HR, RBI). But he did lead AL position players in WAR. Only one other guy was within 1, White Sox infielder Don Buford.
  7. FWIW, Garver really doesn't have much catching experience as a pro. Certainly not for someone his age. He's caught about 2700 innings in the minors. Compare that with the dearly departed JR Murphy (who is actually a few months younger). Murphy has caught almost 5300 innings between the majors and minors. That's the equivilent of 2 or 3 extra seasons of catching 125 games. I guess it will be up to Falvine to decide if they are prepared to let Garver develop at the MLB level. One thing is certain. The Twins will need an experienced catcher (preferably one with some MLB experience) at AAA next year. Recker would certainly fit the bill.
  8. MLB is waiting and still deciding what to do about the Astros in the wake of Hurricaine Harvey. The Astros are scheduled to host the Rangers starting Tuesday and the Mets next weekend. Neither series is likely to take place at Minute Maid Field. The stadium is so far undamaged, but nearly all of Houston is in emergency mode. Airports and roads are closed. Hundreds of thousands are without power and/or homes. And forecasters say they might get another two FEET of rain in the area. Houston is having such a special season. It would truly be unfortunate for it to get derailed in this manner. They have an enormous division lead and a healthy lead for the # 1 seed. But, even the players admit they aren't focused on baseball now. Nor should they be. Hopefully, the rain ends soon. Normalcy returns relatively quickly and the players can regain their focus before the playoffs.
  9. That was odd. I would have thought Busenitz there. It was 6-2, with one on and two out. Too early for Rogers I suppose. That is the significance of carrying Perkins. No Boshers. Perfect spot for him to pitch. Lefty, relatively low leverage situation.
  10. Carerra spun his wheels at home. Otherwise, he probably beats the relay. Well done.
  11. The error obviously contributing, but too many pitches again. Pitch 30 coming. 4 outs.
  12. Unfortunately, the turf will limit the range of the infielders.
  13. Also, if the rotation "does it's job" more consistently, there will still be problems. A team can't use the same relievers everyday. Most relievers are good for roughly 50 pitches per week. Much more than that and it becomes overuse. That generally leads to subpar performance. Does the rotation need to do better, pitch more innings? Absolutely. But I am not prepared to let the relievers off the hook. Some of these guys have been consistently bad or consistently inconsistent all year. Duffey and Pressly most notably. Belisle was terrible early, but has been pretty good since mid June really. I guess it is easy to forget that this is Duffey's first year as a reliever and only his second "full" season at the MLB level. Pressly has been around awhile now though. He needs to be better. This will likely be the 4th straight year his ERA increased and the 3rd straight increase of his FIP by upwards of 3/4 of a run. That's a concerning trend to say the least. The funny thing is, looking at peripherals, Pressly is having a career year. His hit rate is a career best, as are his BB rate and K rate. Until, HR rate. Oops. Coming into 2017, Ryan had given up 16 HR in about 200 IP, a little less than 1 per 9 IP. This year he has given up 9 in less than 50 IP, a rate of 1.7 per 9. That, in a nutshell, is Pressly's problem. Too much hard contact over the heart of the plate.
  14. He's not listed as a player who is out of options, so I would assume he does. But who comes up? Slegers maybe if they think an arm for tomorrow is needed to back up Gibson (a very real concern IMO). Boshers would be eligible Tuesday, but he's a loogy, period. Using him against RHB hasn't ended well.
  15. People forget that Wade Boggs was a lead off hitter for much of his career. Roughly 40% of his PA. Roughly 75% were as a 1 or 2. He had 24 career stolen bases. Mauer has 52.
  16. Personally, I'd say very low. He was fortunate to only allow one run to a punchless Chicago lineup with all the traffic he allowed. Gee allowed two hits to the Sox and he got pummeled today. Playing on turf is never going to help a sinker ball pitcher like Gibson. Side note: what Scott Erickson did on the 1991 "superfast rug" is truly amazing. The Jays lineup also has multiple hitters that punish mistakes. Gibson makes his share.
  17. Looking back, looks like I got them twixed around at some point too. Duffey was mildly overworked early in the year. Not obscenely IMO. He's only worked on 0 days rest 6 times all year. Two times were due to double headers. Another two were due to games extending to at least 12 innings. Rogers has pitched on 0 days rest 12 times already this year. More appearances than Tyler, but fewer IP. I use him as a comp because Rogers is still pretty new to the pen himself.
  18. According to Brooks baseball, Pressly avg four seam fastball is 95.95 MPH in 2017. What is your source?
  19. Wow. Back in the days of Hawk and Eddie, I think the Twins lost like 4 or 5 games with a lead in the 8th over the course of TWO seasons.
  20. I'll agree on Hildenberger. But "The Book" says you don't use your closer on the road when you are trailing. If you use him to keep the game close, who do you use if you get the lead?
  21. This will be the second time under the knife for Chargois and Burdi. Counting on either is wishful thinking IMO. Pressly is barely holding his job. Some of the other kids may pan out. They may not. It's pretty rare for a contending team to have an inexperienced bullpen. Take out Belisle and Perkins (which is pretty certain to happen this offseason) and the most experienced reliever is Ryan Pressly, who is also far from certain to return. After him, it's Rogers, with roughly 1 1/2 years at the MLB level.
  22. The sad thing is, the Twins have little choice but to "take" it. They don't have 8 better guys. Hell, he's probably their 5th or 6th best right now DESPITE allowing 1/3 of inherited runners to score. I think it is of little debate that a guy with an upper 90s fastball and (what can be) a hammer curve should be getting better results.
  23. Rick Aguilera isn't one of the expected call ups. The only guys in AAA that MIGHT be able to help are Boshers and Tonkin, if spotted against same handed hitters. Jury is still out on Turley. But he's a guy with 5 MLB appearances. 3 of them were terrible. Another was mediocre, and that's being kind. He's had one appearance when he didn't give up a run. A game he entered with a 7 run lead.
